I saw an NBC report from the floor of the Detroit Auto Show and they also reported a starting price between $28000-$32000.

I don't see how the CRV can offer navi or a V6 and stay under the RDX at this level.

given how Acura Canada is not going by exchange rate, the RDX will be around 45-50k canadian. That is more than i can afford. Going to stick with the Good ol' TSX!

I've been on the fence on whether or not to get the TL, but if they can really make the target 28-32k price range, then I'm gonna have to hold off till the summer it seems. Don't know if I can wait that long. If it takes them too long, I may just bite on the Volvo S40 T5AWD instead...

FWIW, I just read this in Automobile magazine's Detroit coverage, that implies the nav system is an option. This is also what I'd expect, in line with the TSX and TL.

As you would expect, the RDX will be equipped with standard front, side, and side curtain air bags. The cabin also can be fitted with Acura's navigation system with real-time traffic reports and an ELS DVD-Audio surround sound stereo system.

Unfortunately, they usually take the nav option and bundle it with a few other goodies like the rear view camera and superior audio system. So, if you want any of the items in the bundle, you have to take the plunge for the whole $5000 package.

What's your basis for "usually"? I'm familar with the TSX and TL, where the nav is a single $2000 option.

It looks smaller to me than my wife's 02; CRV, but he claimed it is bigger. We shall see.

I saw it on NBC this weekend and the backseat looked smaller than the CRV (but with the CRV at 39+" of legroom that doesn't say much), front seat maybe the same, and the cargo should be smaller as floor to roof seams to be less. The Rep could be correct though as the exterior length (181" reportedly) and width may be greater for a "larger" vehicle. We'll see when the specs come out.

Any idea when official pricing and specs will be announced? How long usually does Acura wait before the official product launch? Also, will the RDX be released early summer (June) or late summer? The earlier the better for me since my current lease expires in September.

"Usually" was definitely the wrong term. I was thinking about the MDX tech package. What I was trying to say was that they may bundle the rear view camera and a couple of other tech goodies to only be available in the nav optioned RDX.

I remember when I saw the RL concept at the auto show I asked about the price and was told "well below 50K" - because that's what the Acura reps had said. We all know now that the RL is hardly well below 50K. I would love to believe those prices because I initially guessed 31K , but from my experience, you cannot trust the people a the auto shows.

Well, technically it did come in below 50k. If we take the same approach and assume the worst case from what the reps said, 32k starting, 35k with nav (since nav is a $2800 option on the MDX because it includes the backup camera)... that's not too bad, considering a top of the line mazda CX-7 with the electronics package is going to be ~32k, and a top of the line Rav4 is going to be about 33k

If the auto shows guys are right about the pricing (428-$32K) I think it's fair to say the dealers will be thrilled and we'll be lucky to get a RDX off the lot for MSRP +$1000 markup in the first 6 months.

i learned my lesson with the TSX; i have no intention of getting the RDX for the first run. not that my TSX is problematic; but look at al lthe shit they get for the same price as mine was in 03 for the 04 model.... they get power passenger seat; heated mirrors, illuminated steering wheel controls, the beeping alarm, standard XM, bluetooth handsfree, and for 06 the instrument cluster now has a trip computer as well as integrated fog lights etc...

i mean i can live with the update in appearance; but the general fact that it has so many more features sucks for me who was so excited i had to run out and get it.

they did the same thing with the Honda Pilot; which my family bought when it first came out; they now come with sunroofs and heated seats/mirrors which werent available all for the same price back in 03.

so with that said; i'll drive my TSX for at least another 3 years which would easily put me into well over 100k miles (57k on it now) and the whole markup will be gone on the RDX and everything so i think i'll be good to go by then.

They always add some goodies to a model after 2 or 3 years to help boost sales numbers. Unfortunately, even if you wait, the next few years after that will see yet other changes and improvements and then you might as well wait for the full model change. Automotive technology is changing at such a rate that regardless when you buy, the next few years will produce new features that you wish you had waited for. You just have to decide how often you want to get a new car and then accept the fact that you'll be missing out on some new technology during that period. It is similar to the changes in computer technology pricing - anything you buy now will be half the price in a year or so, but if you wait the year, there will be newer, better technology available for double the price. In either case, "keeping up with the Joneses" is an expensive game to play.

My dealer said Acura told him the RDX would list around 31k and come standard with navigation. If so, I think I'll buy one. If not, then the CR-V and RAV will be my backup choices..

Even if its getting the new less expensive Navi from the Civic $31,000. sounds too cheap. They would have to lower prices on the CRV to keep its top models (EX SE) selling. CRV SE sells for $25,450. now and it lacks RDX features like 240HP engine, Navi?, SH-AWD, paddle shifters, DVD-A Audio, Bluetooth, etc.

If the price quote is true, perhaps this means the CRV SE will disappear. Thus if you want a midsize 5-passenger HMC SUV with luxury aspiration incl leather you'll have to get the RDX.

I keep reading things about different versions of the Navi. Are there some versions that are better than others. Is the Navi in the Honda and the Acura the same? I would assume that the RDX will come with the most up-to-date version available. I have also read that the Navi on the Honda/Acura is the best available built-in compared to other manufacturers.

....and I'm going to say this once!! ....The Honda Civic does not come with a cheap Navi system. It is Honda's latest 5th GENERATION Navigation system (A new Honda Navigation platform for 2006) - BLUE DVD. The only feature it does lack, compared to the ones found in other models, is the ZAGAT RESTAURANT RATING GUIDE!!. However, being a newer version, it is SUPERIOR to the 4th generation system, in all other respects such as graphics, processing speed, map data etc.

Secondly, the HONDA and ACURA Navigation systems are identical to each other and the Hardware/Firmware is provided by ALPINE ELECTRONICS!!. The basic software is also provided by Alpine, but Honda has it's own Nav division called HONDA NAVIGATION TECHNOLOGIES which then "tweaks" this software a bit further.

...And you're right, the Honda/Acura Navigation system is the best one in the entire Universe, period!!. No aftermarket or OEM can even come close to it, let alone match it. Take it from me, a person who has literally WASTED thousands and thousands of dollars trying to replicate in other vehicles, the DVD Nav system from my 2000TL, which got stolen after just 9 months of ownership. Eventually, I got so frustrated and ended up buying a 2003 Acura MDX in order to get the Acura Nav system!!!!!

Here's a brief rundown on which vehicles use what, and then afterwards I will explain the very small differences:

1st Generation (Hard Drive)
1996-1999 RL
1999 TL/CL

2nd Generation (First DVD based Acura Nav system - BLACK DVD)
2000-2003 RL
2000-2003 TL/CL
2001-2002 MDX
2000-2004 Honda Odyssey
2003-2005 Honda Pilot

3rd Generation (ORANGE DVD)
2004 RL
2004-2006 TL
2003-2004 MDX
2004-2005 TSX
2003-2005 Honda Accord

4th Generation (WHITE DVD) - all come with ZAGAT rating guide
2005-2006 RL (with XM Navtraffic)
2005-2006 MDX
2006 TSX
2005-2006 Honda Odyssey
2006 Honda Pilot
2006 Honda Accord

5th Generation (BLUE DVD) - new platform for 2006 with better graphics, speed etc. and more comprehensive mapping data of "VERIFIED" cities than the 4th generation
2006 Honda Civic (only feature not included is: ZAGAT rating guide)

XM NAVTRAFFIC is only available on the RL at this time!...I'm not sure if the new RDX will have the 4th generation or 5th generation, but since it is coming out AFTER the Civic, I would assume it will be the 5th generation with the ZAGAT rating guide and XM NAVTRAFFIC as additional features!

Hope the above answers all questions regarding Honda/Acura Nav systems. For further info on specific map coverage, update history etc visit the following sites:

FOR ACURA VEHICLES:

www.acuranavi.com

FOR HONDA VEHICLES:

Vicpai - thanks for all the info on the navigation system. I currently use a Garmin 2610. I'm sure looking forward to the Acura navigation on the RDX and am hoping it will be the 5th generation.

Thanks vicpai for the info. Honda falls short in providing info on the Navi systems on the web.

1st question: Why the price difference for the Civic? It's Navi is a $1500 option whereas the Accord is $2000 and Ody & Pilot are $2200 with Navi/rear camera?

Second Question: Are the screens all the roughly the same size?

Third Question: Does an Accord with XM Satelite get XM-satelite navigation features?

If they follow true to form, the prices will come around the the time the cars ship to dealers..... I'd say around May.

Don't the dealers have to put their orders in ahead of time? My dealer told me they would contact me when they are ready to start placing orders. I would think they need pricing information and colors in order to do that.

Yes, we order cars about 3 months ahead. But not to be rude, but the sellling price has nothing to do with how many cars we'd order. Does it really matter what the price is for a dealer? Nobody will turn cars away regardelss of the price cause we know they'll all sell. We'll probably know colors no later than April. Even here, they'll only be color names with little descriptions or samples.

Dealer Price and Orders

I have placed an order with Chicago dealer. Deposit down. Price is "MSRP + Destination. I would not wait to place yourself in the que if the RDX is really what you want. I placed my deposit 2 weeks ago and am 12th in line.

Going to Chicago Auto Show tomorrow. Will advise any new details.
