License Plate Light Plastic Lense Cover Removal
 

I replaced the OEM license plate lights with some LEDs. One of the bulbs made contact with the plastic lense cover and I guess it overheated and burnt the cover a bit.

Does anyone know how to removal that plastic lense cover/bulb holder from the tail gate? I have attached a couple of photos for reference.

I'm not sure if I should try to remove the holder from the inside or outside of the tailgate.

Mods please feel free to move the thread to the appropriate section if this is not the correct one.

Just found this post in a search, looking for the same info. Surely someone must have done this already...

I removed mines about 3 weeks ago since my old one I had were really gunky. It was a pain in the ass!

So all you have to do is remove the trunk panel and once you can see the bulb sockets, there will be 4 white little pointy tab that needs to be pushed down in order to remove the License plate bulb tray. Just be careful not to scratch your paint.

Cliff note:
-Remove interior trunk panel
-Push down 4 white pointy tabs
-Exterior license plate lens holder should be loose and able to replace.

For me, I ended up having a friend to help.

1.) Removed interior trunk panel
2.) My friend pushed down each of the 4 white pointy tabs from inside the car
3.) I used a flat head screwdriver (wrapped with tape to prevent paint scratch) from the outside to pry the black plastic piece as shown in the above picture. Be careful not to bend too hard or you might break the black plastic piece.
5.) From here, you can access the license plate lens holder easily.

I'm bumping a thread here, because I just bought new OEM license plate light assemblies since mine were gross. I cannot for the life of me get the stupid housings to clip back into my trunk. Has anyone else experienced this issue?

*I did have the aftermarket LED boards from EndlessRPM that many people have come to use. However, those didn't clip in either and I often found my license plate lenses dangling on my license plate, so that's why I went back to OEM. What am I missing here? This shouldn't be so difficult lol.
