Just traded in my 04 TSX for a 07 RDX
I just traded in my 2004 Carbon Grey TSX w/navi with 87,655 miles for a 2007Silver RDX with Tech with 80,700 miles.
The previous owner babied the car except that he was a smoker though. I've been trying to get rid of the smoke with febreze, leaving the windows and sunroof open, and arm and hammer baking soda. Any other ideas?
My wife and I were perfectly happy with our 04 TSX with 87,655 miles but we needed more space and room and all wheel drive for the winters.
It was sad because I've owned the TSX since Dec. 2003 and I babied the car so much. Whoever buys that car will be lucky. I'm going to miss that car.
The odd things are getting used to the non touch screen for the navi in the RDX, the crappier gas mileage, and the HVAC controls are no longer shown on the navi screen unlike the TSX. I haven't fiddled around with the RDX that much, but can you control the a/c and fan on the navi screen? Also, there is no sunglass holder like the TSX did.
The used car place we bought it from said that they just changed the oil. Do we need to take it to an Acura dealer for an 80,000 service?
I am happy to join the RDX crowd. Now, I just need to wax and polish the RDX.

It takes years to get it (smoke) out of a car. The headliner is probably the easiest place to start with the Fabreze. Someone on another forum had used an "Ozone machine". Could be worse, like dog or skunk odor which is really hard to get rid of.

Smoke is really hard to get rid of. In addition to what you are doing, change the air filter immediately. Ask a detailing place what to do, perhaps they will "guarantee" that they can get rid of it.

Also get some leather cleaner and conditioner. Why in the world did you settle for a smokers car? Yuck. I hate being around smokers and i be damned if I'd be in their car too.

The RDX will tell you, via the Maintenance Minder, what kinds of service it needs and when. Unless you have reason to think something is amiss, I'd just wait until the next time it tells you service is due.

I picked up a smoker's RSX a few years ago and it took about 6 months to finally get rid of the odor. Oddly, even the inside windows would get greasy from the tar every couple of week. I vacuumed the carpet and seats frequently, and put air fresheners under the seat. It will pass though

I think I will take it to one of the Acura dealers I went to for service for my TSX before and get it detailed both interior and exterior. I have read that detailing the car will help eliminate the smoker smell.
I got the RDX because it was the cheapest RDX I could find anywhere in the Chicagoland area within my budget and I could trade in the TSX for and pay the difference without getting a 2nd car loan because I had paid off my TSX in mid-2007.

ok easy lol so the guy got a smokers RDX...im sure hes well aware of the health consequences of smoking. unfortunately thats not the point lol.
First, like west said - change the CABIN FILTER (located behind the glove box). Next, get it professionally detailed and let them know about the smoke situation. After that, see where you are at.

Best method. Leave a small aluminum pan with vinegar on the carpet of your driver seat and another small pan in the rear seat. (Buy a gallon of Vinegar). Leave it in the car for a day or two with your windows slightly rolled down.
Your car will wreak of vinegar for a day or two but the smoke smell will be almost gone when the smell clears up. Have the carpets shampooed and the headliner cleaned as well.

Also, put laundry softener (Bounce is usually recommended) in various places and leave it there. Under seats, in glove compartment, anywhere you can stuff them.
Bounce took a terrible mildew/mold smell out of a car of mine, so I'm in favor of it. If it works, great. Let us know.

this is what I would try to do:
-Leave all the windows open as much as possible
-clean all surfaces with windex/glass cleaner
-clean & condition the seats
-vacuum and shampoo all carpets
-with the HVAC on, spray all vents & returns with lysol
-spray the whole interior with ozium
-after the carpets dry constantly spray with fabreze or citrus magic (I find it works well)
-After a week if it still smells repeat 2-6 until it goes away.
Congrats on your new car! the smell should go away, it will just take time & hard work
