2012 RDX Tech AWD Fuel Gauge Issue

I have a 2012 RDX tech with about 20,000 miles on it and have noticed when driving on Interstate 79 in West Virginia I've had the gas gauge needle drop to "empty" and the orange light comes on for low fuel level. One minute it's showing halfway between a half tank and one quarter tank on the gauge and the next minute it goes to empty suddenly. This is very alarming as I thought I had a massive gas leak and I stopped at the nearest gas station and put gas in it and the RDX only took 11 gallons to fill tank so it actually had 7 gallons remaining when the low fuel light came on. It only does this when gas gauge gets below one-half. What could this be?

Sounds like the float assembly in the tank is malfunctioning for some reason. Does it always do this whenever the fuel level gets to that point? And did this just start to happen all of a sudden? Have you done any mods like a fuel pump change etc?

Thank You for your reply. I haven't done any mods or fuel pump change and it's been doing this for the several years now.
The gauge does go back to the proper level when I shut the engine off and restart the car. I am going to my local Acura dealer to have my TSX serviced tomorrow and will inquire about a possible defective float assembly on the RDX.

Also check for a wire short, fuse box, and the gauge itself.
