i'm looking for ways to increase my MPG in my 99' 3.0. At the moment, everything is stock and i get around 25 mpg (28 is my best). what can i add that will increase my mpg? i use injector cleaner every so often too. i've searched the forums and i've seen answers ranging from different spark plugs, to switching intakes/exhausts, etc. definitively, can anyone tell me what could be added to improve mpg, and the subsequent improvements?

seriously though, just be an observant driver; dont gun it everywhere you go, you dont have to be the first person off the line at a red light, etc...

Im quite the opposite of that though... I fortunately still manage about 310~ miles/tank...

i've heard that with the V2, there is a humming noise. i use this car as a daily driver and i'm sitting in traffic a lot, so its more important for me to be comfortable than have more power. does everyone that installs a V2 get this humming noise? what are the other intake options (i dont mind it being loud at WOT, i'd prefer it, but i dont want it to make extra noises, like hisses or rumbles)? also, will driving in rain be bad with a V2? finally, what spark plugs would be good?

i actually like that humming sounds.. and only with v2 doesn't make that noise.. but w/ exhausts..(i think.. cuz mine does now) oh well... for spark plugs, NGKs are good.. others will also recommand you.. but I got OBX..(cuz it was free from my shop)

Dont accelerate fast and try to stay at a steady speed. Only carry what you need in your car, less weight improves gas milage (If your not using your back seat then take that out). Make sure that you have a nice clean air filter. And if you dont want a v2 because of the sound or a cai because of the rain just get an AEM short ram that will help. Also good plugs should help and Unorthadox racing pulleys will help too because they are lighter. And keep your tire pressure at the right psi.

if your going to change your spark plugs, also get an injectors flush. it'll clean out your fuel rail and injectors

You will have no problems with the V2 in rainy weather. I had a CAI 4 inches from the ground and no problems. Just plain old NGK's will do. You don't need platinum, or iridium, or plutonium, or anything like that. Make sure your spark plug wires are not cracked, your distributor and rotor are good, your thermostat is good, your climate control says "AC off," etc..

really new filter and just get a tune up or something like it, buying an aftermarket intake will only make it worse trust me, youll wanna drive fast to hear the sexiness of the honda motor (and vtec)

Just tried to see what kind of milesge I could get on my 2.3CL. 5speed. Trip one was 210mi and I got 39.8MPG. Trip was only 178 mi and I managed to get 40.4MPG. Air was used on about half the trip, never exceeded 75 MPH. Crused at about 65 most of the time. The trip took me about 5min more than usual and I got 6MPG more than usual.
Good company and music, stressed down and loved it. These old folk have an idea worth looking into.

I got a new exhaust (Greddy SP2) and intake (AEM V2) and they haven't affected my gas mileage at all (still around 27-28 mpg). The only thing that I've seen significantly affect my gas mileage (aside from not being a lead foot) is the air pressure in my tires. I can definitely tell when the pressure is low, as my gas mileage suffers. So, my suggestion is to keep the tires pumped up.

i put headers on my 3.0 and got a very noticable gain in both h/p and mpg. i got an ebay intake and i dont have the humming noise.. tho some people do with the same intake. i paid 18$ for my intake and at the time that was my only mod.. and it gave me a little better mpg... that was 2 years ago and i still got the same intake, and filter (just keep recharging the filter.) however both the intake and headers on the 3.0 will make it louder. especially the intake when you get into vtec.

get wires/cap/rotor changed + filter changed...

fill up with a fresh tank and hit the trip. check tire psi before u get out of the gas station.

if ur still getting shitty gas mileage... i donno... try a different brand of gas

It's not about speed so much as it is about RPMs.

When accelerating from a dead stop keep your RPMs under 3k. If you really want to stretch mileage then keep your RPMs closer to 2k. Apart from using your AC, this makes the biggest difference in your gas mileage.

Keeping my RPMs under 3k, I get about 30mpg in the city in a 99 2.3. When I drive more "freely" I am lucky to get 24mpg.

You basically have to drive like a granny if you really want to max out your potential mpg.

dang musulsa, you get 30 off your 99 2.3? i get freakin 22 and now im at 19 now average. half highway and half city. its weird, i have my tire psi in spec but it still looks low on air. my trunk has hella stuff but not enough to equal to a passenger on the car so that shouldnt knock down my mpg that bad is it?

AEM v2!!!!

It's WORTH it....if it hums, i guarantee you won't hear it while driving 60mph on the freeway...road noise will overcome the "humming"...haven't heard of it humming though

I have that same problem. My psi is at 40 right now (tires' max psi is 51) but it looks like I have flats in the front. Rears look fine for some reason.

dude..we have the same car so u definitely got ur calculations mixed up.....even the factory sticker says 22/30 for the 99 2.3 so it's impossible that ur getting 30 for the city with ur car.

I have a Palm mounted in my car that has a gas mileage calculator. Every time I fill up, I input the current odometer reading, the per/gallon price of the fuel, and the total gallons at the fill up. It calculates my $$$ spent per month on fuel, my MPG per distance, my MPG per date, my MPG for the last tank of gas, my best MPG ever, etc. etc.

I've been doing this and checking it every fill up.

The stated average for city driving is 22, but my average so far has been 24 with some revs. If I gun it off the line at every green light for one whole tank I get about 21. Don't tell me what *I'm* experiencing with *MY* car because of some numbers you read somewhere.

Try keeping track of your own MPG. Driving habits STRONGLY affect mileage. I have gotten 36mpg on an 95% highway roadtrip.

I drive 110 miles 5 days a week to work in back. I get my best gas when nothing is in my car. Nothing in the back seat, or trunk. As well as keeping all fluids fresh, air filter clean, tire pressure at correct psi, and proper oil levels/changes. Keeping your lead foot at home also helps greatly, using cruise control, and only using a/c when you have too.

I drove to Michigan on Monday with my father's 3.2 TL. I noticed one huge difference when I went this time compared to previous times. Before I would get around 400 miles to the tank but now I got 280 miles which is murder on the wallet. We are talking about one flow of speed at somewhere around 80 mph. The only thing that I have changed in my regular yearly tune up is that I went from Denzo Iridium to NGK Iridium which were a few cents cheaper. 280 miles to the 14.? tank is shit. Air filter is good, oil done regularly with Mobile1 synthetic 10W 40. Coils are only 2 years old and so is the fuel filter. I can't see what's the problem unless the car is just worn down. It does have 160k with original auto transmission. The car is still one nice bitch. Runs smooth, plenty of power but I don't know about this gas mileage. Anyone have any ideas. Spark plugs maybe?

I've found that especially on highway driving, using a higher octane gives a lot better mileage.

a long time ago i read that some guy replaced his thermometer (i don't know for what ... the a/c or engine temp???) and got much better mileage after that

I definatly need to drive grandma-ish cause I get like 17mpg around the city and like 21mpg hi-way.... (I have twitchy lead foot ) I find myself driving with windows up and AC off more and more... I just got a K&N filter and it helped me up to 19mpg, but i think i need to change teh plugs, that and this hot weather (91 +) kills power

-Switch to synthetic fluids...lasts longer than conventional fluids, gains of about 1-2% efficiency by reduction of friction

-Use K&N air filter and remove the intake resonator. You improve air flow and suck in cooler air. The resonator moderatley increases noise, but it's nothing compared to an AEM intake. Plus, the resonator sucks up hot air from the engine bay.

-Maybe upgrade to a relatively quiet free flow exhaust system. The Dynomax mufflers are fairly quiet.

-At highway speeds, drive with the windows closed with fan or AC on. Open windows cause tons of drag. When using AC, use recirculating mode to conserve power.

-Most importantly, make sure your car is properly tuned up and CHECK THE COLD TIRE PRESSURE WEEKLY. Tire pressure is the single most important thing when it comes to fuel economy and performance. Most people don't do this often enough.

I only noticed an mpg difference with highway driving after switching to Mobil 1. Within the city I had no difference.

I think performance tires in general cause a drop of 1-2 mpg. The rolling resistance is greater with soft rubber compounds. I never get some of the fuel economy numbers others do. Could be the thinner air in Calgary as well.

I just drove from Toledo to Kansas City and back this week.

My average mileage was 37.6 mpg (99 2.3 CL)..... awww yeah.
