tranny swap, engine swap, or car swap?

As some of you may know, our 2.2CL recently started having trouble staying in 5th gear. So we took it to the dealer this morning & they won't warranty it because the tranny case is cracked. I guess that explains the leaking tranny fluid. :p

Anyway, they want $3500 to replace it with a new one, which is out of the question.

The car has 33k miles and it's a '97, so it's fairly new.

Option A:
find a used Accord/CL tranny from the junkyard & install that

Option B:
find a used DOHC Prelude tranny, engine, and ECU somewhere & install that

I don't really like this car much & was planning on selling it, but the wife won't let me sell it to an unsuspecting buyer without fixing the tranny first (not that I would do that anyway ). However, I think with an extra 50hp it might be fun.

What to do... we just moved to NYC & we don't really need the car for a few months or so. Anybody have any hookups on H22a's?

Thanks!
~G

What would be the advantage of that? I don't think the F22 has enough power to make use of the Prelude tranny. Probably easier to find an Accord tranny anyway.

Doh! Just emailed Wayne at Park Ave Acura to ask if he'd do a Prelude swap, and he emailed me back to say that he convinced the district manager to warranty the tranny.

Thanks Wayne.

I'm glad to hear that Acura is going to take care of you. It doesn't seem that a tranny case should crack at 33,000 miles!

You mentioned that you don't really like your CL. Is it due to problems with the car or just personal preference?

Yep, personal preference... I like small fast cars, not large slow ones.

Oh, and before anybody asks why I bought it, I didn't. It's my wife's car and she got it before we were married.

But seriously, it's a nice car for what it was intended to be. It's just not my cup of tea.

Before anybody starts flaming me, look at all the 's.

How would that save me more money than a fully warranteed repair?

A turbo MR2 would be great, but I wouldn't want the T-tops, they reduce the car's structual rigidity.

for $3000 i'd put an engine swap ...prelude engine , tranny, and ecu...in my area its 1600 for the engine tranny and ecu...and about another 1000 for labor....so....its under 3000

Put a 3.0 in there and you'll be fine...i know its not the fastest and theres no stick available, but, ive dusted Maxima's (the new auto's), Celica GT-s's (great high RPM but no match for the 3.0's torque), prelude's and a few others so its not a bad engine.

the advantage of puttign a lude tranny is u will get more power to the ground. ull make much better use of the power u already got. and no engine swap. also u can still alwasys swap the engine if u like. on top of that a 97 2.2cl weighs about the same as a new lude so the perforance will be close minus the handling. an h22 cl is rare! and would be original. i might be going that route in the future.

I wouldn't really put the CL into either one of those categories. It's never going to be as fast as, say, a Porsche 911, but it's not exactly a lumbering beast either.

Given that it's not really your cup of tea, I think you'll only be really happy if you trade it for something else!

I guess we enjoy autocrossing too much, so hopefully soon after Wayne gets the new tranny in the CL, we'll sell it for a Miata, MR2 Spyder, or a S2000.

Anybody in the tri state area want a 2.2CL 5 speed with 33k mi on the engine and 0 mi on the tranny?
