New to board....and a new owner....

Just joined the board...........In the process of purchasing a 1999 CL 3.2 from a buddy that works at a local dealership. He's familiar with the car, they've done all their service and he thinks it's a good buy....

I'll be checking this board often for updates and posting any questions I may have for your "experts".....

:::::OH:::::::

My bad............as you can see, I'm not exactly the best "typist" around........

What I ACTUALLY purchased was a 1999 Acura CL 2.3 Coupe.

Thanks for straightening me out!!

Got a black one.........bodies in excellent shape..........unfortunately it is an automatic - I would have really rather had manual, but it still has a bit of pep left in it.......

Leather interior and it only looks like the drives seat has been used since it was purchased. Hope this will last me a while because I really like the way it looks and drives!

You may be able to do a manual swap pretty easily. It all just depends on how much you want to spend on your whip.

Arent most Honda Autos pretty much gone by 120k~?

You are probably looking at a rebuild soon....Hondas are notorious for weak auto transmissions.....not just the 2nd gen CLs and TLs.

...What is the big rebuild when you have over 100,000 miles...........

Is it transmission or entire engine...........??

Can anyone shed a little light on MoonMaster99's comments??

Sure like to be prepared for this............

Just tranny rebuild. A way to elleviate any issues down the road is when you get your tranny done have them put a tranny cooler on there. It cools the oil that feeds to your tranny, keeping it cool and not overheating. This is what happens to them. They get hot and start to go.

The 3.0's have the real bad trannys, and 100K is the end of the car's life!? WTF? 100K is just broken in for most honda motors. I've seen hondas with 200, 300 and up to 500K miles on them

The honda engines themselves are probably the most reliable in the whole industry. But the trannies are crap. Everyone will tell you. its just not on the CL either. its the accords,tl's, newer cl's,etc. It all accross the line.

Your gonna wanna look for slipping, sloshing. Just stuff that does not feel normal/natural.

You should be fine, it's a 4cyl not a V6 you should be ok for another 100K if you maintain the maintenance. You may need to change little things like control arms, axles, window regulator, but other than that you should be ok, if you don't think it's a sports car.

Sexy car, I actually kind of like the pin stripe, but it definately stands out. It def does have a cleaner look without the pin, here's my car, I'm about to lower it, but you can see what it looks like with no pin stripe

So it's the 3.2's that have the bad trany problems...or at least more than the 2.3's.??

the second gen tl's and cl's have bad tranny's, so doesn't the first gen 3.0's. you shouldn't have a problem since ur a 2.3 and don't put as much power or torque through it as the 3.0

That's brutal to have to replace one that quickly! Hopefully this one will last a long time......and luckily I'm pretty easy on a car - my "speed" days are long gone....

you've gotta be good to go.

I have a 3.0 with 132,000 miles w/ a tranny cooler and regular fluid changes. Still runs strong on original tranny. :knockonwood: I think alot of kids on here floor the pedal every where they go, which kills the life.

I baby the shit outta mine, and it shows. I also do small little things to save the tranny. i.e. when I park at night after work, I park backwords, that way when the tranny is cold in the morning, I can just throw it into one gear and go. (less work on the tranny) Another thing to watch is when you shift from reverse to drive, let the tranny shift before you let your foot off the brake, and come to a complete stop before you shift back into drive. That way, your tranny isn't doing the braking.

Very good advice. I just dont understand the thing about the tranny being cold and it being good for it... can you elaborate?

Congrats on the CL wilsonjg. A friend of mine as a '99 2.3 CL with about 110,000 miles on and its on the original transmission. It drives just as nice as my car. Good Luck with it and don't worry about the tranny. Now get out there and enjoy your new car!

Hey congrats on the car. As far as the tranny goes I wouldn't be too concerned since its a 2.3, but Honda has never been able to build an auto for some reason. Your best bet would be to take preventive measures like installing a tranny cooler and having the ATF changed whenever you have your oil changed as well as the driving tips that Smalls mentioned. All in all its a great car and very well built. Have fun with it.

Im not saying that.

Im saying that in the morning when the tranny is cold and I get in to leave, I only have to shift into drive b/c I was backed into my spot. That is one less gear for the tranny to go through when it is cold (its most vurnable time)
