Headlight Observation

My alarm went off this morning... I ran outside, no one was there so I disarmed it and checked for damage. Nothing.

So I wanted to make sure my HIDs were still working, so I started the car and turned them on. Sure enough, the right lamp was out.

Here's where it got interesting, the left lamp was still on, but so were my high beams - but at low power. If I flicked the high switch, the left one came on at full power, the right one went off.

Long story short, I guess the ballast went bad from being turned on/off when the alarm went off and blew the fuse under the hood and kept blowing new ones. I replaced the fuse, and the headlights are back to normal (though I'm stuck with halogens again for now.)

I just thought it was strange because I've blown headlight bulbs several times and haven't had the high beams come on at reduced power. However, if the fuse is blown/removed, they will. Now I need to figure out how to utilize that "feature" for DRLs.

yeah I had that happen in the accord once, and i am guessing it would be more than easy to make DRL's out of that with some relays. Maybe I will experiment at work if I have time.

^^^ If you do, let me know how it works out. Essentially, a DRL unit could be made with a set of resistors, couldn't it? If you wire in resistors, the bulb wouldn't get as much power, right?

Right, problem is that if you put it right in series with the bulb you need higher wattage resistors since they will be taking part of the load. Engine bay fires are no good. I will bring the haynes manual with me and see what causes that dimming to happen.

I have an Acura service manual with wiring diagrams but I didn't find anything... I'd appreciate any information you could provide.

I haven't found a single DRL kit for our cars that will run the high beams on low power.

I was looking for a reduced power high beam DRL kit for a while before my HID highs... Honestly, thats why I bought the HID's.

You ever find anything? The one company I spoke with said that Hondas have negatively switched headlights that makes the whole process difficult.

I was thinking about just using the highs at power, but you have tinted headlights so you can pull it off.
