Gas pedal spacer

today when i was driving home i pushed my gas pedal down and i got a little "pop" noise and then my gas pedal became very loose and i lost all of my gas pedals response except for the last 10%. I pulled over and inspected and found that the rubber spacer at the top of the gas pedal had a slice down the side of it. I put it back on and it was fine for awhile but came off again while pulling into my garage. Is this a common problem? I cant seem to find any information on it? Can just the spacer be replaced? or does the whole cable have to be replaced since it is an item on the cable?
