A few things I need help/suggestions with
Ok here it is:
I purchased a used 98 2.3 CL. I love the car, its a nice ride...very clean inside and out with low miles. EPA rates its mileage at a decent rate...and I have read some threads on this forum prior to registering (but after buying the car). I saw how terrible the gas mileage is for this car. Why is it so bad? I mean...I just clocked my last tank and got 18.34 miles per gallon...its a inline 4, how can it be THAT bad? I understand that the weight of the car is a little beefy...but come on, 18mpg? That just seems incomprehensible...My last car got 30-32, which I could handle...but to me...18mpg is worse than a v6...are there any ways to increase this? I am aware that tire pressure, spark plugs and clean air filters have a role, but how many mpg are we talking? 2-3? 4 at most? Is it the weight of the car that creates this problem?
This is currently the only downfall I see...other than the timebomb that is the tranny...which also sucks...and as I said, its a 98...and from what I have read, im past the 7 year goodwill warranty...
Any suggestions on improving gas mileage? I am tempted to completely rip out all the interior from the back of the driver seats to the end of the trunk to relieve some weight.

Its a 98 with 90k (just broke 90k)
As far as the v6 goes...less work to get the weight moving...more power...I dont know if that has anything to do with it. The four cylinder has to work harder to move the curb weight of the car.
I am just really dissapointed with the mpg. I am just looking for some ideas to increase it a little bit, thats all...

We I4's rock on the highway because once the cars moving, momentum is pushing them along.. only a little bit of gas from the i4 if we need it + 2500-3k~ RPM's in 5th = gas saver
In the city though we're pigs.. car's too heavy and makes the engine work too hard to move it
