yeah welcome to the pitting club.
probably happened due to a lack of paint care over the years and the weather in your area. my parents pretty much neglected the car since they bought it new in 97 and it showed when I debadged...water/sun damage pretty much ate all the way into the metal.
spot painting/wetsanding/rotary buffing may work, but I doubt the results will be stellar as these aren't exactly 'tiny' areas you're working with. Best bet would be to use a the honda mini touch up paint bottles, apply it into each individual pit with a toothpic or needle point til it's above the level of the clear surface, wetsand with 1500 grit, and hit it hard with the rotary and some medium grit compound. Might not hurt to try it if you already have the tools or a cheap hookup. Report back if you go that route though, as my outlines are really starting to irk me, since I'm a perfectionist.

The solution is in.
So guys, I just got back from the body shop. He took 2000 Grit wet sand paper to it. That failed. He tried rubbing it out with Professional rubbing compound. His solution: "either glue em back on or 300 bucks to repaint the lid." "It wont ever match right but it might be close."
As of now I am not paying 300 bucks to repaint my trunk lid, yet the pitting makes me barf.
So...what should i do?

I'm sure it'll come off, just use a razor blade, body paint cleans up just like glass does when you use a razor.
$200 on the trunk sounds about right... its ridiculous how much little shit like that costs. The quote I got for my spoiler color matched and mounted as $230 give or take.

JUST WETSAND, WITH 2000 THEN 4000, THEN BUFF WITH MEGUIERS COMPOUND CLEANER, THEN SWIRL FREE REMOVER AND POLISH, THEN WAX IT, THEN SEAL IT.
It should work.
If that does not work you will have to get it painted.
Sorry.
Been detailing cars for 15 years so hope this helps.
