Whitz, sounds like the dealer is doing the right thing. Stay on the dealer until it's fixed though!!
I'm moving your topic to the 1st generation forum so that those guys can chime in.

My first to second shift always seems alittle jumpy too but the dealer always says there is nothing wrong with it. It also wont go into first or reverse sometimes, but everytime the dealership drives it, it never happens. I have to put it in second and then in the first or reverse. Anyone else have this problem?

auto or manual, 2.2 or 3.0? couple of things:

auto? don't own one but I've read a bunch of reviews complaining about not so smooth transitions for automatics, esp under harder acceleration. my test drives were way more profound with lower hp 2.2; 3.0s weren't bad at all, kinda fun.

manual? I've got one. different story all around. sync downshifting to first requires just a little patience, shift to neutral with slight pressure toward first - about a second later with no acceleration it'll pop right in. re: reverse or first from a stop - what can I say, it acts like every honda I've ever driven. for reverse, release the brakes and try it, then maybe let the car roll an inch if you can. the first gear thing? happens consistently but only once in a while. weird idiosyncracy with honda manual trans.

Well, if it's a '97 2.2 CL, then there is no fix, but if it's a '97 3.0CL, then there is a kit that you need to have the dealer apply. I believe it replaces part of the shift computer to adjust the shift from 1 to 2. In any event, there is an official Acura notice on it from corp to the dealers... Your dealer should be able to take care of this, and there should be no charge.

Good advise. One more questio Whitz... does this happen all of the time (I'm assuming it does)? My car shifts a little rough when it's cold, but it usually stops pretty quickly. Mine is also an automatic. Let us know some more details....

Thank you all for the imput. My car is a little rougher in the morning when it's cold and it is still what I call rough all day. To describe the condition further, it's sort of a "pause-shift" as opposed to just "shift". Our SAAB 900 se just goes click to the next gear. The 3.0 just seems to take alot longer to get it done which is why it seems rough. It should be noted here that nothing else about the SAAB driving experience touches the CL. The boys at the dealership say it's normal. I say it's sloppy design, manufacturing or something.
What ever, I will put a few years on the car and be more careful next time I buy to be aware of all the nuances.

I too own a 97 acura cl 3.0 and have worked in a family owned trans shop for 10 years. I just had mine rebuilt and found that everything internally was smoked. Now that its been overhauled im having the same issue. Ill keep you guys posted as to what fixes the issue but my first guess is that the linear solenoids are bad. They aren't cheap but they go bad frequently. Linear solenoids are also known to be tranny killers so keep that in mind.
