When do you think the next gen TL (TLX) will be released?

I know based on previous generations the 2014 model year should be the next generation but with all the delays do you think the TL will be delayed as well? I keep reading about the RLX and MDX being redesigned next year as 2014 models but nothing about the TL. Looking at the age of Acuras line up I'm thinking we may have the current TL for a few more years.

RL - 2005 Model Year
MDX - 2007 Model Year
RDX - Was 2007 Model Year up to this years redesign.
TSX - 2009 Model Year
TL - 2009 Model Year.
ILX - NEW

Thoughts???

And here we go again with the 4 and 5 year cycle thing. It is going to be new for 2014, and as far as my mathematics are concerned, the model years 2009 to 2013 is 5 years. Opps, did this start again. lol.

I'm going to the LA Auto Show where their introducing the RLX. I'll see if I can find out anything about the TLX. Chances are slim as last year they only had a fantastic looking model/spokesperson on the floor. She only knew what they told her. Nice to talk to her so I could get close enough to smell her though.

Yep, been on a 5 Model Year cycle since at least 2nd Gen, so that would put this as a 2014 MY release. Typcially that would begin the fall of 2013.

However there is a chance for an early, mid-year release. Acura has done it before. Although personally I think it's unlikely.

I'm surprised we haven't seen spy shots yet though.

I think Acura is under pressure to get out the new TL/TSX replacement as soon as they can. Not that I'm comparing an Accord to the TL/TSX but in harder economic times it makes a nice alternative. Lower cost, higher efficiency, and some nice features. It is a nice package at an attractive price. If you are not sold on Acura "smart luxury" then it is an easy take. TSX sales were down pretty sharply last month. Don't know if that is a trend or a blip, but regardless, the TSX/TL is long in the tooth and needs updating. The Accord chassis is in production and to save money they need to move to this platform and stop loosing money on the TSX. So worst case Sep 2013 as a 2014 model, or best case Mid-year. That will replace the entire Acura line up in a few short years. I say the sooner the better. But I ask please Acura, give something in the TLX for both TSX and TL owners. Don't leave a big gap down to the ILX. If so I'll probably have to look elsewhere.

There is no delay in the release schedule for the 5G TL/TLX. So we should see it launched in the fall of 2013.

The only delays are for the RL replacement and NSX replacement.

Thanks for the replies. I'm hopeful you're all right. I really want to have an Acura again and I hope the TL/TLX is what I've been looking for.

Believe you're correct; have a 2012 and like it; (March 2012); only 2,500 miles; hate the blind spots on both sides. have shopped the 2013 Hondas with their side view cameras; one thought is to trade in this one for the 2013 Accord EL with V6 and side view cameras, and wait for the TLX (dealer said most likely next model year: 2014, intro. apparently even they don't know a whole lot more than I've read here.

Having difficulty locating the Accord V-6 with navigation for some reason; since I finally learned to use the navigation (sort of) would not wish to give up this valuable tool.
It's great; have found restaurants within 10 feet the first time by listening to the voice and following the directions.
As mine is a 2012 with less than 3000 miles I can barely wait a year for the TLX chassis; a 2013 accord with V-6 coupe would be great to put mileage for in between (their V-6 does not require premium fuel, too.)

replied to Briny's; apologies if not navigating this thread correctly.

I live in LA so I'll try to go to the auto show as well. But I doubt they'll show the TLX. I was at the SF auto show just three weeks ago (conference) and it wasn't there.

I saw the RLX at the LA Auto Show and it was extremely impressive, especially the beautiful interior and the technology on the center console. I really hope some of that rubs off on the TLX.

If Acura incorporates the CVT tranny to the TLX, would it be a deal breaker?

There are mixed feelings about the CVT and I think I've read somewhere that Honda has plans to place CVT on all their cars eventually. CVT looks great on paper but didn't Nissan have many problems with their CVT's?

I drove a 2013 Accord I4/CVT and will say it is a bit sluggish off the line. A TSX is much zippier off the line. I think if they want to use the I4/CVT in the TLX they better find a way to give it a little more gusto off the line. I will say overall if the 2013 Accord features and build are indicative of the TLX then I am eager to see the 5G TL/X.

Waiting until fall would be a big mistake for them, the TL is not selling well. The G outsells it sometimes 2:1 and the G is 7 years old. In the Glory days of the 3G TL it sold upward of 7K cars a month and outsells the G35/37 2:1, the tables of turned and Infiniti is showing the new G in Detroit next month. They need a new TL/X ASAP. They pull the 2012 in 6 months to get the restyle out there to help, they need to get the 5G out there to get Acura back where it needs to be. The ILX is tanking so the TSX and MDX and now the RDX support Acura. Granted the RLX is the showcase car, but realistically they will be luck to sell 1000 cars a month, far better than the RL's 150, but far form the 4-7K cars the TLX can move.

^^ Agree with your comments re: the new Accord build quality and features. We just bought a 6MT EX sedan. It's amazingly solid and quiet and a great value for the money. With the 6MT, the new DI engine feels pretty strong, with surprising low end torque. And the great thing - with only 300 miles on it, it's averaging around 33 mpg in mixed city/suburban/freeway driving. In a 30 mile highway jaunt it had worked its way up 35 mpg. Very impressive, Honda.

I'm debating whether to buy a 13 accord EX-L I4/V6. Part of me says it's a bad idea to purchase a new car if it's going to be a commuter and I'm also unsure if I were to purchase it if I should get a V6; granted they're not as thirsty as they are on the TL, but the I4 should be enough for city commuting.

JM2010 did you test both, did you consider both, who's driving it, what purpose does the vehicle serve? Price paid?

This is my wife's car. She does the usual car pool duties, shopping, etc. with the car. It's mostly suburban driving. We did not drive the V6, since we owned a previous generation Accord and the I4 was sufficient for us in that car. I will say this car feels considerably quicker than our old Accord. I understand the new V6 is pretty quick and surprisingly light on fuel consumption with the new version of VCM, but we just did not feel we needed a V6. I'm very pleased with the car, especially in 6MT form. It has a light, lively feel to it and build quality seems very good. Price paid was 23,400 OTD, excluding TTL; it's about invoice +/- $100.

This is not the 1st time Acura made mistakes.

The RL has not been selling well for years, and Acura has let it drag on until next year when the RLX starts arriving in showrooms.

Acura will never let the new TL/TLX to come out before the RLX, and to steal all the spotlight from the Acura flagship sedan.

I don't think it would be a deal breaker. If they offer an I4 in the TLX I'd assume it would have the CVT with it for better fuel econ. Maybe they tune it for more performance.

I do think the CVT is a short term technology. I can't recall where I read it but Honda is also working (or buying from ZF I think) 7,8 gear DCTs. These will offer the FE of CVTs but less friction loss.

^^^^^

Knowing it's limitation in tranny design, Honda is now willing to outsource the 8-speed DCT program to the tranny specialist ZF.

^^ I had the same thought when they first released the pix of the Concept C.

If it's based on the 9th Gen Accord, I think we'll be very pleased with the new TL(X). That car has excellent driving dynamics. The front end on the concept car, however, will need some uh . . . refinement before it's ready for sale in NA as the 5G TL.

That's basically the Honda Accord plug-in hybrid that's to be released soon. I'll puke if the next TL looks like that. lol.

Would not be surprised if they moved the TLX debut up closer to the beginning of 2013 like they did with the mid cycle TL changes. Think with the new Accord's features there is no reason to buy a base TL, get theV6-EX instead. If you want a 4X4 very soon the TL-SHAWD is still they was to go in the Honda lineup.

Otherwise I would wait on the 5G.

I was just chatting with a salesman while test driving a '13 TL AWD on Saturday and we were talking up coming models. He mentioned he was disappointed because he just extended his lease on a 2010 TL so he could keep it until the TLX comes out this summer/fall, but he was just told it was pushed until mid-2014.

This from the infamous "ILX isn't selling...." interview with John Mendel. Problem it is hard to determine if he means the MDX AND the TL redesign comes next year, or if he is saying the TL AND the NSX coming in 2014. Personnaly I don't think Acura can afford to wait. Compared to its competion internal to the brand (Accord) and the Genisis and Infinity redesigns coming, they need to get the TLX out as soon as possible.

"Should RDX sales continue to be strong, and if the RLX does well, Mendel expects to hit that number in the next year or two -- especially with a redesign of the MDX mid-sized crossover coming next year and the redesigned TL mid-sized sedan and new NSX sports car coming in 2014. "

I would agree in general, but it's timing would not have swayed me either way. I told him I have a couple lease pmts left, so I would need a new car sooner than this summer.

I hope the TLX is at least shown in production form soon!! See what kind of upgrades over the 5 year old TL.

It cannot be as luxurious as the the RLX, but I hope the TLX is lighter and sportier. I believe the TLX will look the Honda C concept from 2012 Beijing auto show. (just change the H to a Acura Shield.).

what are the predictions for the 2014 TLX's engine / horsepower? Is it going to be substantially faster/sportier than a 4G... ? i hope Acura continues to offer a sporty version with a manual.... for the sport sedan crowd...

As much as I would like an RLX, if the TLX looks like that concept (and I assume they will tone down the grill) I think I like the styling of the C Concept better than the RLX and would go for the TLX. Seeing what the Accord Touring has in it I have to assume the TLX will have LDW, blind spot warning and adaptive cruise control and the LED headlights in the Advance, and maybe hopefully rain sensing wipers and would be nice to see the Krell Audio. Let's just hope they offer the TLX in AWD and I am all in. I am counting the days to my M37 lease ending in September....

Quick Reply: When do you think the next gen TL (TLX) will be released?
