TLX Test Mule

Curious to hear people's thoughts on what could be lurking below the fender flares.

Not seeing a RWD model between TLX and RLX, and if this was something RLX related why not just use that as a base?

Honestly I'm stumped on the widened rear track.

I'd love to see what comes out of this!

Does the hood look elongated to anybody else? It may be a test bed for Acura's upcoming turbocharged V6, not necessarily for a new model. The fender flares may be needed for the staggered wheels, suggesting rear wheel drive?

Loook at the big brakes, I mean bigger. Maybe Acura finally put good brakes on theirs cars. And they are testig it with MB AMG C43 and Acura NSX. That is a good sign...

Yeah I'm guessing next gen engine and drivetrain testing, just sandwiched into the current TLX. Fender flares are probably because the next gen car will have wider wheels and they're just testing it on the existing car.

Interesting. Must be testing a new powertrain, which might suggest a new TLX for the 2020 model year - giving them about 1.5 years to get it out in fall of 19.

This is so damn exciting!!! I’m so happy to see Acura have a heart beat again. Bench marking against an AMG really says a whole hell of a lot. Possibly a sport hybrid powertrain with that NSX there? Hmm

I think I'd be cool if they put out a TLX Sport Hybrid.

Then when they can't move them, they'll have to discount them by almost $10K like with the RLX Sport Hybrid.

Buyers win again.

Acura, are you listening? Put out a TLX Sport Hybrid. So much sales potential.

I'd be ok with just AWD. I'd be surprised if Acura changed to RWD now... just a few years ago they announced they would never do RWD. But.. that was with the previous VP and not Jon Ikeda. He would have some crazy pulling power if he was able to go with RWD now.

To save some money they can just make SHAWD standard and default it to 60% rear. Provided it can take the load of course. Not the same as rwd, but a hell of a lot better driving!

Look at all the mass in front of the front axle. No way that thing is RWD.

Going with not RWD. Doesn't Honda/Acura like to share parts with other models to bring down costs? What other RWD model does Honda/Acura have or is planning to produce that they can use this RWD system in?

Maybe they're doing development for the baby NSX using TLX skin to fool everyone.

Liberty Walk TLX? Oh wait, no exposed screws.

I can't tell what AMG is along for the ride, but the fact that there is one indicates that perhaps something performance oriented is in the pipeline. Hopefully, it'll be out by the time my lease is up.

Reminds me of the Acura minivan spy shots in 2014. I don't think that ended up being anything.

Judging by the rims and side badge it is probably a C43 or E43 4matic.

Let's not get too carried away with RWD talk. SH-AWD is more than good with a FW drive car, for those of you who need that. I jut hope they keep the PAWS for those of us who are good without AWD. Acura can certainly compete with the big boys but also have to keep their value proposition VERY competitive.

Some fender flair would be welcome, just as long as the power plant put out 350+ hp. Could this be the start of a TLX Type S wide body? A coupe would be ideal with the wide body. Always thought the 911 wide body was the nicest of all 911's. I would pay up for this for sure if the power train matches the look. Otherwise why bother? The plus is down the road these would have fantastic resale. This would be one good way to get back in the game big time.

So would I but it does make some sense. Forget the RLX, they sell almost none. From the TLX to the NSX the price jump is insane. They could sell 50x more of a wide body 2 dr tlx if they did it right. If the price point was 50k it will sell, not in huge quantities but way more than the NSX. Heck the last NSX I saw was at the acura dealer when a co-owner of the Giants was picking it up while I was getting the A-Spec. Never have actually seen a new NSX on the road. For that matter I still have not seen another A-Spec on the road in my parts. I think that is due to price point vs performance. Acura needs to make "precision crafted performance" more than a slogan. Lexus and Audi all have high performance variants. In Audi's case they have the S and R series variants. The advantage acura has is won't have the Audi problems of high cost of ownership and massive depreciation. I know Audi is "better" reliability wise but its a high cost car to own and even with their improved reliability they as late as 2012 (and some 2013) models have major engine problems with piston replacements that cost 6k. So I would say time will tell on reliability on newer Audi cars over time. Opportunity is there.

Hope if they are going wide they actually bump the whole fender out. Those 'flairs' would look ok on a pickup or Jeep.

If they are fake then it's no better than the fake large exhaust outlets on the tlx.

Hopefully to make way for the wider tires to match much higher HP. the fake exhaust ports are whatever, look nice but you can't do a wide body look and not mate it with a lot of power. Still don't know why they couldnt do the type S quad exhaust on the Aspec rather than the tiny pipes recessed into the huge ports. It's subject to ridicule when people notice that.

Agreed. Those pics are less about mule cosmetics and more about powertrain and other mechanical developments.

This is not unlike the Sport Hybrid mule that surfaced prior to RLX implementation:
