Thinking About Trading for a TLX

I currently have a 2016 GMC Sierra SLT CC SLT, and absolutely love the truck. However, I am starting to think it is costing too much for our family, and the money could be used elsewhere. I love the look of the TLX and had the TSX before I bought the truck. Anything I should look for? Is it unrealistic to find a solid preowned for around $20k?

That is a huge jump from a big truck to a mid-size sedan

You can probably find a TLX for 20K but I personally would avoid pre-MMC TLX. Read up about the problems on this forum and decide for yourself.

Three main problems you'll hear more often are (1) Transmission (2) Slow touch screen (3) Vibration.

I've personally experienced all of them on TLX loaners I've received for the last 2, 3 years.

2015 to 2017 model years. I have a 2016 and even with the TSB fix, there's still a hint of vibration at highway speeds. Don't have any issues with transmission and the touch screen, while slow, is passable.

That doesn't really leave me with any model years, does it?

Well not really, not all TLXs experience the same issues. So do extended test drives and look for these problems. If the car you are interested doesn't have any problems, you are good to go.

I would avoid the 2015 models. 2016 models sorted out the majority of the issues so start from there.

are these problems that common? Enough to change what I'm looking at?

Honestly at that price and the TLX being a hit or miss in earlier years, I would avoid it entirely. Is there a feature you really want like AWD or ELS audio? Cause if not, get a Civic or V6 Accord. Not as sporty but not sure if that's your thing coming from a utility.

There are really that many problems that I should avoid the car entirely? Seriously?

I had two 2015 TLXs. Didn't have any problems with either one. OP should just go and drive a bunch and draw his own conclusions. As far as I'm concerned, it's a comfortable, sporty, AWD daily driver with a healthy dose of technology and luxury thrown in.

4 cyl TLX models seem to be pretty bulletproof. Ive owned mine since April 16' and I often say its my favorite car that Ive owned. Most of complaints owners have are from the 2015 V6 models, not so much the 4 cyl models and 2016 or newer V6 models. My advise would be, take a few 2016 or newer TLXs that you are interested in for a long test drive. Feel how the transmission shifts in different driving situations, use the infotainment system, and lastly take it out on the highway, at speeds around 70-80 MPH, and feel for any vibrations in the car. As a one time TSX owner myself, the TLX is a huge step up in refinement and comfort.

My 2015 v6 TLX had the transmission replaced, and it's been fine. Love the car

2016 TLX V6 with zero issues here, test drive some cars. There are many many people who have no problems with the TLX, with that said i would go 2016 +

I4 models with the DCT is solid. Most of the issues are with the ZF9 transmission on the V6 SH-AWD models.

Most of the transmission issues are actually on pretty much any V6 2015 TLX (not just the SH-AWD). I think the I4 had some early issues that were ironed out (?) and weren't as serious, but I'm not sure. The 2015's had some other issues that seemed to have been ironed out even in the 2015's, too.

Early 2015 I4 here - absolutely no problems. One software update to improve some low speed shifting, accomplished during normal routine service. Love the car.

I own an 2016 I4 Tech and love the car. To get SH-AWD you need to get a V6. However, the I4 does have PAWS (Acura acronym for Rear Wheel Steer) and the Car is very agile and handles very well. The 8 DCT transmission is excellent and shifts very quickly, and mated with the 206 HP engine makes it a quick car. However, you can't make a decision until you thoroughly test drive any car you are looking at.

If I had to guess, the next big TLX iteration will replace the ZF Auto in the V6 with a DCT and replace the V6 with a 2.0T. If I'm in the market for a TLX, I want the DCT, V6 and the SH-AWD

I would stay away from the 2015, 2016 and 2017 V6 SH-AWD. So many issue and i am stuck with it. I own a 2016 with all the issues mentionned by Hadokenuh. Terrible buy. Still fighting with Acura Canada and dealer.

I have a 2015 TLX Advance SH-AWD. My daily drivers from 1989 - 2003 have been Ford F-350s with manual transmissions. I still have an F-350 but daily driving since 2003 has been Honda/Acura (3 Hondas, 2 Acura). My wife has a 2014 Highlander Platinum; the TLX is our preference for in-town and long-distance travel. The touchscreen is slow but most of our entries are stored so it's a one-time effort. Zero vibration issues with in-town or interstate (65-80 mph speed limits) driving. The transmission has a couple of situations where it performs in a jerky manner - having driven manuals I'm used to anticipating situations to mitigate the issue. None of the tranny behavior gives me concern over longevity nor motivates me to trade - I get great mileage, features and comfort. I intend to keep this care a long time.

Im on my second TLX. First was a 15 3.5 SHAWD. Didnt have any mecanical issues with the car, but the tranny did shift a bit odd at times. Slow to up and downshift were my biggest complaints. It wasnt a deal breaker, but it made the drive very mundane. I now have an 18 3.5 SHAWD which feels like a totally different car. Zero issues or complaintsh so far.

Yes, it is the gray! I love the car! I would probably enjoy the v6 more, or the tech package more, but it has everything I need. I picked between this car and an XSE 2017 Camry. Surprisingly, the Camry was quite nice and fun to drive. The only reason I didnt really go for it was the dealership offered me $5,000 less than the Acura dealership.

I would avoid the TLX. I have a 2016 V6, and Acura does not want to take ownership of the jerky transmission, shuddering on acceleration, and VCM vibration. The Car is under warranty, but Acura says the car is operating as designed. The VCM vibration is driving me nuts. It is still enabled in Sport mode...... why would the engineers build it this way? If your in Sport mode, you could car less about gas mileage efficiency.

I ended up buying one. It's the 4 cylinder, apparently those have less issues. I have had no issues so far!

Doesn't the 4 cyclinder feel as if you are driving a honda civic? I originally purchased a 4 cylinder, and returned it. You are one of the fortunate ones that does not have any issues.

It kind of does, but it's not going to get driven much in its life. Bottom line for us, it's a nice, cheap car. Way cheaper than my old pickup. I have only had it for a week, so I have no history with it, so no issues for a week lol. From what I have read, most issues are from the 6 cylinder, right?

Yes, I have read the same on the 6 cylinders. I had a 2010 TSX and LOVED IT (had to give it to my son). Thought the TLX would give me the same reliability and performance..... NOT!!

Congrats on the new TLX!

As for your question - I know some (not on this forum) would pick a Camry V6 XSE or XLE (especially the new one) over a 4cyl TLX. Most of them don't want to deal with "luxury" dealership and "luxury" repair price. Cars are appliances to them. The Camry fits the bill perfectly.

From what everyone is saying, maybe I would've been better going with a Camry XSE! Lol
