Say Goodbye

Waiting for a freeway meter light on an on ramp, 30mph rear impact from a 1999 Ford Explorer. Three in the TLX, no injuries. Car was declared a total loss.

Other driver uninsured.

Yeah I was pretty sure it was a gonner, frame damage, does it everytime. I just got my 2016 TLX advanced BWP, spoiler, tinted, slate interior. What a difference a year makes, much better DCT performance. Very smooth and responsive. My 2016 is my 11th HMC, started with Honda in 1977... have had 2 Civics, 1 Legend, 3 Accords, 1 MDX, 1 RDX, 1TL and am now on my second TLX, and have clocked 1 million miles. Guess I'm a true believer. Only $2,600 in repairs in 30+ years. They build great cars, eh?

Holy shit!! Wow. I can't believe everyone walked away from that without any injuries. Even if a shop could repair that car, man, I would never want it back. That thing is messed.

I also cannot believe how many people drive without insurance in the US. It blows my mind. In canada, you can't register a vehicle without proof of insurance first. I've only heard of the very incredibly odd case where a driver wasn't insured here. Down south, it seems to be a normal occurrence.

You do have to have proof of insurance. People just let it lapse. You're suppose to turn in your tag in my state if your car isn't insured within so many days or your license get suspended. But like you said it's a normal thing.

Op sorry about your tlx. Glad no one was hurt.

Thank goodness no one was hurt!

You're lucky the car was totaled. I would rather pay the difference for a new car then have them try to repair a car that was so badly damaged. It would never be the same.

Last year my TLX was totaled by a driver who was texting and blew through a stop sign. I also walked away without any injuries, just some pain from where the seat belt grabbed me. These cars really keep you safe. I immediately bought another TLX. Are you going to do the same?

Yup plenty of uninsured drivers in CA . UGH

CA started requiring insurance to register cars a while back. So these scumbags go to a insurance office across from DMV. Get insurance, go get registered, and then cancel their insurance.

There is a special place in hell for these morons....

OP....Wow! I am delighted to see you and other occupants are OK which is what matters most. It is amazing to see though how the rest of the vehicle is intact - Acura does great at protecting its passengers!

Wow, I'm glad you're okay. I find the head restraints in this car are in a good position and are a good shape. How's your neck?

Now I'm glad I got an insurance package that for the first 3 years, will totally replace my car with a brand new one with no out of pocket expense if it gets totalled.

Metered ramps on freeways are an abomination. They're an invitation to rear-end accidents, and they also endanger cars already on the freeway since they don't let the cars entering get up to speed fast enough to merge.

I think CA and AZ are the only states still using these stupid things.

If I'm reading Post #3 correctly, CaptainJack replaced it with a 2016 TLX Advanced.

Believe it or not, there are still a small number of states where insurance isn't mandatory, but for most states it is, and you cannot register a car without it.

In Massachusetts where I used to live, and here in Georgia where I now live, if your insurance lapses, then your registration is revoked. The insurance company is connected directly to the state's computer network. The problem is, just like driving on an expired registration or a revoked/suspended drivers license, you can get away with it until you get caught.

I'm sure people in Canada also drive while suspended or with lapsed insurance. Maybe the penalties are more severe, but I'm sure it happens.

Thanks for all the replies and kind words, this was my first automobile accident in over 20 years, and I agree with all who noted the car is the replaceable item and how fortunate we all were to escape without serious injury. To answer a couple of questions that came up:

- The car was a purchase, I had a large down payment, so once settled with State Farm, 80% of my equity recovered by insurance, which made the 2016 possible. I just got it back today from the shop for window tint, looks nice!

- I was hit by an uninsured motorist, and have uninsured motorist coverage, so my $1000 collision deductible is waived. I recommend everyone get uninsured motorist coverage, especially those California residents, where over 40% of the cars on the road are underinsured or not at all,

- I am seeking legal remedy from the other driver, I'll keep you posted on the success of that action. Sometimes turnips do bleed.

-The collision was on Hwy 65, here's a link: https://www.google.com/maps/@38.7867...2850836,16.25z

you'll notice from the map there is remnants of a crash when the google car took the photo, so I am told getting in collisions at meter lights is all too common.
- I do not carry "GAP" insurance, it is not feasible for me because they only pay if the car is driven for less than 15k miles, and you file a claim in the first year of ownership. Too many conditions for me to be interested, even given the small cost.
- The TLX was destroyed beautifully, in that the passenger compartment was totally intact. However, the transmission goes into a lock mode upon collision, and so the trip it took onto the tow truck was additional reason for me to be glad it was beyond repair. They really abused it getting onto the bed.
- I am awaiting my c-spine films for the report of anything serious, I have a considerable amount of discomfort in neck and shoulders, I'll keep those interested posted.

So, let me tell you from someone who clocked 35k on a 2015 TLX how much better the 2016 TLX is. It is amazingly better. It is quieter, it rides better, the transmission feels 100% smoother than the '15. The engineers at Acura listened and did a great job with the 9 speed DCT, it is about as perfect as I have every driven. Low speed, high speed, down shifts, up shifts ..... like butter. So I'm actually looking at this whole mess as a silver lining, I have a much better car than the '15. Not the best upgrade path, but at least I have the car now that should have been produced in '15. I had my '15 in the shop for transmission issues twice, and for a sticky seal on the drivers window. So hopefully this car fares better. Oh, and I got this car for $4k under MSRP. Thanks again for all the comments, drive safely ...

I think it's a requirement to have GAP when you lease.

Also, OP, you don't have a DCT. Only the 4 cylinders get a DCT.

Thank goodness all are safe. I live in a province where we have public auto insurance with among the lowest rates in the country and where everyone must be insured for collision and liability. We also have limited liability, where injuries are compensated based upon need rather than the proficiency of the lawyers. Drivers at fault pay the deductible for accidents and are also assessed a premium on their license for the next year that effectively covers the other driver's deductible. The insurance is sold and administered by all of the private insurance providers, with collision and billing functions managed by the public entity. It may not be perfect but it works well, and has been in place for years, with no call for privatization from any government, right or left leaning.

I agree, sadly these types of accidents are becoming more and more common due to distracted driving. Around here it's more common to see people on their phone while driving, compared to people just driving.

I will never understand how a text, call or looking at a social media site can be more important to some than paying attention while driving.

OP glad everyone is ok after an impact like that.

OP, I am sorry this happened to you and am glad all are okay

I see the same thing every day here too. You pass a car and it's obvious they are looking down, either driving slower than the flow and/or weaving.

^^ It's everywhere! I don't understand why judges/politicians can't modify the laws to punish this as severely as drinking and driving! It's just as dangerous, if not more!

Luckily, once in a while, the law of natural selection wipes these idiots! And for the record, for those, I have ZERO sympathy!

In Alberta as of Jan 1 this year (so already in effect) anyone caught distracted driving (cell phone, putting on makeup, eating with more than one hand or eating something distracting like soup - officer's call, etc) is hit with 3 points on their license plus a $287 fine. They suspend your license if you have 15 or more.

However, Manitoba it's 5 points! I think that's what it should be. Or you get caught twice, and they should pull it.
