Prototype "Launch kit" available on pre-orders

I just got back from Acura(ontario),

It's 3200$ if I recall correctly, but it adds a skirt package all the way around similar to to the 3G TL A-Spec kit, or the TLX prototype, and includes 19" wheels

If any of you want that prototype look, and i was shown it, looks great

This this the A-spec skirt packages we've been seeing in the pics lately?, or is this a totally different kit that looks like the Prototype Launch?

I very highly doubt it's the latter.

The "launch edition" package seems to be the skirts/lip/kit we've seen already :

Edit: What a bummer. I would have seriously re-considered waiting a couple of years before getting this car if they are really offering the proto kit as a limited launch edition package. So back to initial plan I guess...

I don't understand Acura not making special bumpers available with those aerodynamic parts molded in. I guess they don't feel that enough people care about such things... they don't pay attention to Ford and others making a killing off of their Sport and Platinum editions

I'm sure the wheels look better in person. On higher res pictures, they don't look half bad. Those are not hi res pictures.

It's because folks that buy Acuras are not enthusiasts

I guess they feel that catering to the middle/common group is better than catering to all. I understand that tooling for parts is expensive but damn, they could sell so many more cars if they catered to us as well.. options!

Odd how many of those pics are either too dark or don't show the car in its entirety.

"launch kit" means "thanks for paying MSRP. The price of the kit is built in. Now here is a spruced up version of the car you are going to drive around to gain us attention as advertisement for the car."

except......most people are staring because it's ugly. lol.

I disagree with your assertion that "people are staring because it's ugly". I think Most people will not even notice the kit. They will only see the overall style/shape of the car.

The wheels look indeed amazing. Just see the latest pic in the pics thread. Chances are, they gonna look even better in person. Some people are way too quick in passing judgement on things without a clear idea of the said things

I'm referring to the "launch kit" wheels. Not the wheels on the actual prototype.

This "launch kit" is also hideous compared to the base model.

I dunno. Looks good here:

Those pics on the silver car are blurry. You can't see the nice details of the wheels. So those pictures don't give them justice.
Anyway, I wouldn't hesitate a second if they offered them to me instead of the other available options.

Do you have any pictures to show the molded aero parts of other cars? I'm referring to the models that don't have a souped up trim (i.e. BMW has M, Lexus has F, etc).

The GS F-Sport, The IS-F-Sport, the Q50S, all have different front bumpers than their standard models

My car has the M-Sport version which is different than the standard 4 or the M4. The 4 door 3 has the same package available. It typically comes with additional performance & interior parts so its not a pure aero only package though I expect you can get the parts.

Its not over cladding like the old Pontiacs but full replacement nose, tail & rocker panels

Don't have a shot of my front but this is what it looks like

Thanks. The M-Sport is one of the few, maybe the only, BMW package that you can justify simply on the content, MSRP is $3000. Includes Light alloy wheels, staggered summer performance tires, the full aero package, sport suspension + interior items like steering wheel, sport seats, special headliner, door/dash trim & other bits, pieces & trinkets.

True to a degree. Most people won't look DIRECTLY at the body kit but they will think something is different as a whole but they can't put their finger on it. When I 1st put on my A-Spec kit that is exactly what people said. They knew something looked different or the car looked sporty or lower but they couldn't tell what it was till I pointed it out. Very much like that BMW M-sport pictured. It looks obvious it is not base. Enthusiasts can point out the difference is in the wheels, bumpers etc. Other people would say "Hmmm that one is different in some way. I can't tell what though."

There are certain types of people that have a quick eye for detail. Even if they aren't enthusiasts they tend to catch things that are out of the norm very fast. This body kit looks stupid, sorry. The awkward way it is stuck on is noticeable and I'm sure many people will see that and say "I like the car but I don't like this part sticking off it. Why is it like that? Spoiler looks weird."

I know people want to say the 3G bodykits were stuck on too. But at least it had a flow and went with the lines. This TLX kit looks totally out of place. Sad thing is you have a smooth, clean underlying design. Why trip it up? A tasteful bodykit could have been designed better by a 6yr old.

What they should have done if they really cared to do a "launch kit" that would benefit their customers is to offer a premium package for free. That would help early adopters get at least some feeling of value of buying early without making it obvious the company is using you as a driving billboard.

They seem to have confidence that this bodykit will draw in more interest. It is something that can backfire on them. It is further evidence to me that management is still lost as to what people really want and nothing much has changed at Acura HQ.

Nice looking ride Bear. So you have a 435i AND a 135is? Which one is your daily?

The M series is the only BMWs that make me look twice, 3 times.. more. Everything seems to flow together and they scream "I am badass, don't mess with me!"

When I grow up, I want one!

Either one, top up or top down, AT or MT kind of day is usually the deciding factor. My very first car was a 1957 Ford convert & have always managed to keep one in use since then.

Converts are typically long term buys for me. The 135is predecessor was a Jan 2004 330Ci ZHP that I sold last year.

Ranger also gets a lot of use, had it since the summer of 1998. Signature list is all current, Xterra is used by my grandson for college. I tend to keep specific cars & utility trucks long term but turn over the coupes in 3/5 years.

The FFR Cobra in the Acurazine build thread will get a lot of use when its done because the weather here is good for it even though it has not top or windows.

So far, every production wheel for the TLX is ugly. I was very excited based on the Prototype wheels and am baffled on why they wouldn't release them at least as accessory wheels. The looked great and filled in the fenders really well. Im so disappointed right now.

What I don't understand is if you were going to purchase an accessory wheel (if offered) why wouldn't you just buy ANY aftermarket wheel of your choice? There would likely be little difference in cost and you'd get something more unique.

Because I think it's highly unlikely that someone is going to design something that is EXACTLY what we saw in the prototype rims. And it won't carry the Acura OEM logo. There is something to be said about getting unique parts that still carry the brand name/logo.

I think the point being made here is: what is so hard for Acura to simply offer up what they tease us with in the prototype? It's not like the rim design was soo alien / futuristic that it would have been impossible or impractical from a production or design perspective to produce. They can clearly design (and produce) far more complex and complicated rims as seen by the final production 19" TLX aero rims.

It just seems there is a real disconnect going on from an overall design perspective at Acura. To me it looks like (and smells like) classic disorganization of different design groups not being brought together to ensure a consistent and coherent design language and aesthetics. It's a classic problem of different groups doing their own things with their own agenda's, and someone at the top just hoping it all comes together, versus the different groups being led by a board or leadership that is making the final calls to ensure consistent design language across the board.

But I don't work at Acura, so I have absolutely no clue if that is the issue. That's just my observation based on the same things (and the same end results) I've seen at companies I've worked for (or with) and dealing with product design.

Some people prefer OEM. No cost difference? It is if you want to get the "launch kit". You're basically paying for some ugly rims just to upgrade later.

But so far, I don't think anyone wants the launch kit. lol
