Ouch , first scratch..moron people
This morning I was parked on street next to the hospital where I did some blood test and I got this.
Luckily is only the bumper , but it's still sucks.
The funny thing is that while approaching 9:00AM and waiting for my blood test I went out to pay the parking as it's starts at 9:00 Am and it was all good. Behind me was a white Toyota Yaris. After 30-40 min when I finished I saw that and behind me was a Toyota Camry , but no marks on his front bumper. It has to be the Yaris ... stupid people .
I'm mad , but what you can do.

Ouch! Sorry to hear and see that. It's like we can't have anything nice!
I hate it when people do this and just leave. Someone bumped into the back of my car and left 2 gouge marks on my rear bumper, about where the license plates are on trucks. There was the outline of a rectangular bracket in the dust when I discovered it

Got a scratch like that on my front bumper. Unfortunately I cannot be exactly sure when it happened. Went to a few parking lots that day before noticing it. Touchup paint with a clear coat applied makes it less noticeable.
Then the other day I watched as someone else's car got dinged. Lady "zips" into a parking space but made slightly too wide a sweep. Created a scratch almost identical to yours. Glad it was not my vehicle that time.

The world is a rough place, deal with it. Especially in Sugar Land, Texas.
If I had a tow truck, I would tow your TLX and release it off a cliff in the name of science. I always wanted to test the math formula for gravity to make sure it is correct. You know, what good engineers do

My wife makes fun of me because no matter where we go I park as far away from civilization as possible. I know scratches and dings are inevitable but I can delay it as long as I can. Plus we need the exercise

momyc...I am deeply sorry to see your incident. It is truly unfortunate that people don't have the decency to at least fess up when they make a mistake.
Accidents happen...running away from them intentionnally shouldn't happen.

Thanks you guys,
I already pass by a body shop where my son had his hood re-paint it and they said it's not a big job . Max 80 bucks.
Probably I'll fix on Monday.
It was just my "luck" this time .

^^ I know about luck...I was coming from a mini trip the other and luckily, was with my Hyundai, but out of nowhere, a rock came in and chiped the windshield. I had just stopped for a coffee and just got back on the highway...had I stayed 2 minutes more, this wouldn't have happened.

1. Park away from other vehicles where possible, enjoy the walk, and avoid the lazy folks who park as close as possible and are clinically proven to be more likely to open their doors carelessly (okay, this is my gut feeling only)
2. Park facing into the wind, assuming others around you are doing the same. doors blow shut instead of open.
3. Avoid parking beside poorly kept vehicles. Drivers are less likely to worry about their or your dings
4. Avoid parking close beside large SUVs/trucks and 2 door cars. Bigger vehicles correlate to bigger folks and bigger door openings.
5. If parking is necessary at close quarters, take a pic for future reference.
6. Finally, seek help for being overly anal about your car and actually taking the time to develop parking guidelines. I have

Meh, that really blows. I've got two dents on the right rear passenger door, one right on the scallop line that runs through it. It's higher so I think it must have been a truck/suv.

I had not considered #2 (I don't live in the windy city) and #5 (really).
You need more sessions from your shrink as the symptoms still exist. She told me that there has been some progress as your list used to be 10 items:
7. Never parallel park as it usually ended up with curb rash on the wheels.
8. Never parking under a tree that birds visit because their poop will ruin the paintwork if not promptly removed.
9. Don't flip the bird to someone in a parking lot as a key can do a lot of damage to the paintwork.
10. Don't park on a side street where kids are playing ball of any kind. There will be some damage and you can never catch one of the little buggers.

I parked at a shopping mall last year and when I came out, there was a good sized ding in my door including some blue paint. Yes, I was upset. I checked with the security in the mall and we were able to see the security camera footage of a blue pickup truck, (looked like a dad with his 8 year old son who just swung open the passenger door with all his might) but could not see the license plate. I suppose I could have staked out the mall waiting for the return of that truck, but decided it wasn't worth the risk. It cost about $250 for repairs at the 'remove a dent' shop.

It's unfortunate there are people who don't care about banging their doors on other cars. There are also, again unfortunately, accidents also...years ago as I was coming out from a supermarket, I witnessed an old lady couldn't hold on to her door when exiting her car because it was very windy...and bang...my TL-S got an ugly dent.

Ouch. Sorry to see that.
My own car got hit I the treat also when it was only a couple of months old. Of course no note.
Luckily since it is white, some wet sanding got rid of the damage, bit I needed a little touch up paint on the crease just above the passenger side rear reflector.
You can't keep anything nice nowadays when you have to rely I those around you not being careless.

I live by this and several other parking rules. In no particular order, my 5 Scratch/Dent Risk Mitigation Strategies are:
1. Park away from other vehicles where possible, enjoy the walk, and avoid the lazy folks who park as close as possible and are clinically proven to be more likely to open their doors carelessly (okay, this is my gut feeling only)

One more rule I've read somewhere. Always try to park at the rightmost end of parking spaces (forward parking) so that the only space available is on your left side. There is around 50% chance that the car parking in that space has only a driver (and no passenger) and therefore your car is safe (Most people generally park forwards into a slot, only very few reverse park).
I always park in the rightmost spot at in the garage at work as probably 95% of the people who park there are alone in the car and exiting on the drivers side.

Three things strike me after re-reading this thread.
1. We are passionate about our cars;
2. Lots of good ding/scratch prevention ideas, and
3. We may qualify for a discount on a Group Therapy session.

That sucks!!! But at least you have someone to blame :-P
I got my first scratch parallel parking....was watching the mirror to not scratch a rim instead of backup cam and tapped some crappy civic behind...He had one of those idiotic license plate bolts that protrudes and left a nick in my bumper. I'd only had the car for a week....
Lesson there: don't drive when you haven't slept for 48 hours

Until the driver gets angry at door blowing back and then really lets it fly open with a scrum-type of push..

[QUOTE=miner;15456700]That triggered a memory.. Ouch! I had bought an '89 Shelby Dakota, brand new.. My wife (now ex) opened the passenger door, the wind caught it and the door hit the mirror of the car next to us.. that was one nasty dent right in the middle of the door panel

Glad this was a simple fix. I recently had someone "tap" my TLX rear end, and they sliced into and made a hole right next to one of the parking sensors... $411 for new OEM bumper cover and $600 to paint and install it...

I generally prevent anyone from washing my car during service, the one time I let the dealer wash it, they scratched the C pillar. There is this place where I have gone twice for tire related stuff (again emphatically declined the complimentary wash) and both times I have got my car back with a ding! And this is supposed to be a nice place.. some people just don't care about cars, I guess!

I feel for all the posters who have already had damage and I know how upsetting it is. It does seem that fewer and fewer people respect other people's possessions, but that's the reality. I do try to park away from other vehicles to lessen the chances of dings and scratches, but I don't have a list of how to do it. I understand why others do, and I will always walk as opposed to getting close to other cars if I can because it only takes a millisecond to get a nasty scar on my baby, so a little exercise is fine with me.
