new 2018 TLX owner, coming from a ‘16 ILX......

my lease on the 2016 ILX was up, I was thinking about keeping it but I gave it back and went with the new 2018 TLX in bellanova white

I had no idea Acura was discontinuing the ILX until now, so I’m kind of happy with my decision

I’m not a car enthusiast or anything, I went with the 4-cylinder 8-speed DCT the deal was just too good to pass up. No money down, cheap monthly payment

This is my first TLX by the way, dealer wanted too much for the V6 aspec I wasn’t going for it, but so far so good I’m liking the car very smooth ride, the tech is very good, clean interior, love the apple car play, touch screen controls, and of course the LED’s

I’m not seeing much love for the 2.4, I couldn’t find a review anywhere only reviews are for the fully loaded V6 TLX, is the 4-cylinder still considered a good ride?

Congrats!

I've got the 2.4 Tech and am quite happy with mine! I think you don't see much love for the 2.4 because most enthusiasts are looking for a V6 with more hp - the 2.4 people likely don't gravitate to an enthusiast site like AZ as much. Just a hunch.

I had a V6 loaner and did like the power more but I thought the front felt heavier and really like the way the 2.4 handles better. The DCT while not perfect is really very nice and a good match for the engine IMO.

Enjoy your new ride - It will be interesting to hear your thoughts on how it compares to the ILX,

Of course the TLX 2.4 is considered a good ride. I really like the 8 speed dual clutch (WAY more than the ZF9) and I feel that the 2.4 offers a much better weight balance. So as long as you’re happy then that’s all that matters.

I had a lot of fun testing one of these. Went a different way, but dang was that DCT a joy! Enjoy the ride in good health!

Congrats, you have a nice car enjoy it & don't worry about what anyone else thinks. If you are happy its a WIN.

Wish my car still had a DCT was a great transmission.

Thumbs up

Here's a video review of the 2015 2.4 TLX:

Oh, I've seen a lot of people say they like that car. If YOU are happy with a 4-cylinder engine, then it should be a VERY nice car for you - people like how that car handles, and particularly like the 8 DCT. I have the V6 (Tech, not A-Spec) and I keep hoping to get a chance to be given the 2.4 as a loaner when I get service. I really want to try one (for more than just a short test drive).

thanks for posting a video review

seems like the reviewer really loved the DCT way more than the trans in the V6 model, good to know I haven’t even test drove the V6 so I can’t say

coming from the ILX which also had the DCT, I have nothing bad to say about it, was great for the time I had the car

I drive a 2016 white TLX Tech and absolutely love the car. The 8 speed DCT is wonderful and is well mated to the 2.4 engine, and the PAWs helps make this a very nice handling car. It's equally adept at city driving and as a very smooth and quiet highway cruiser. ENJOY!

Congratulations!

Although I opted for a base 3.5, I was very tempted to get the 2.4 Tech which was at the same price point as the base 3.5.

At the time i test drove the 2.4, I had a 14 Accord Sport with its ED 2.4. The 2.4/8DCT was far and away a better performer than my Sport’s 2.4/CVT. Not to mention, the TLX 2.4 was the best handling non-AWD Accord variant I’ve ever driven....despite the Eagle LS2s.

Congrats taking advantage of the lease deals. The TLX isn't getting that much love so you are going to get some good deals. Dealers trying to get them off the lot.

Good timing since the new Honda Accords are getting the attention.

I haven't driven the 4 or 6 cyl TLX yet buy I have a 4 cyl TSX and drove the previous generation before this one and my 4 cyl TSX is still a joy to drive and the engine is peppy and responsive. I do about 80% stop and go city driving and it's more than adequate for that and the MPG is decent (truth be told my TSX is not stellar in this area, though, and never was). When I am on the highway it moves with no issue when up to speed but I do wish it had a little more oomph in the lower end and a few times I have had to really push it to merge.

Anyway, the 4 cyl w/ the 8 speed seems like a really good, fun match and I can't wait to try the 4 and 6 one day. Congrats on the car!

so far so good, I read that they’re doing away with DCT transmissions they can’t handle the power of V6 engines or something?

I really liked the DCT transmission in the ILX and now in this TLX, very smooth quick and fun to drive imo

Hard to tell Acura’s plans for the next gen TLX, but if the base engine is the 2.0T, the DCT will likely go away in favor of the conventional 10speed automatic as used in the equivalent Accord. As you suspect, the DCT probably doesn’t me have the torque capacity for that engine.

Congrats on the TLX; never drove the 4 cylinder, but have heard good things; as long as you're happy, that's all that matters

I test drove both the V6 and I4 models before deciding to buy the I4. I do wish it had more power and SHAWD, but I could not get past the slow reacting and rough shifting of the ZF9 transmission. I was willing to give up some of the power since this is just a commuter car, but I knew that I would absolutely hate the transmission every single time I drove it if I got the V6 model. I've gotten them aas loaners a couple of times, and while the extra power feels great ripping through 1st gear...as soon as it shifts I remember why I didn't buy it.

I understand the unique Torque converter feature that Acura included with their DCT was mainly designed to improve low speed shifting, a frequent issue with other DCTs. It also apparently improved launch times. That being said, is there some notion out there of what maximum HP/Torque this type of transmission could handle?

it was said the reason why Acura went to the ZF9speed was because their in house 4 cylinder DCT couldn't handle the torque of the V6.
however; the 7speed DCT can handle the torque but wont bolt up because electric motors.

I rather think that it is becasue the 8DCT is not as silky smooth as the ZF9 (mine is butter smooth). The 2.4 has 182lbs-ft and the 3.5 has 267. If that 8 DCT can't handle 267 lbs-ft, it was poorly designed IMO (I don't think so). The ZF9 9HP48 in the TLX is ok for 340lbs-ft.

After re-watching the Redline Review above, I feel that he basically mimicked all the reasons why I love the 4 cylinder. I was pretty thrilled when Acura made the 2018 version available in ASpec - Elite trim. If I was in the market now, that would be my next vehicle, albeit at a somewhat higher cost. However, as it will be 1-2 years before I change vehicles, with 2 years left on my lease, so we'll see whether a newly re-designed TLX has something that grabs me and lets me spend more on features because of savings on engine/fuel economy choice. I suspect a 2020 TLX will have just two choices - a 2.0 Turbo and a Type R 3.0 Turbo. I would be more than fine with a 2.0 turbo that comes in around 250 HP and has many of the items we saw in the 2019 RDX prototype, with fuel economy further improved over the 2.4.

You wanna facepalm but...

Absolutely my 2018 V6 TLX is too smooth. I realized, I think the way the brakes work is intentional, I think the way pressing the accelerator can't throw you back into your seat (even though the car is fairly fast) is intentional.

Obviously, Acura wanted this car to be smooth all around - so people complain the suspension is a little too soft, the acceleration is a little too soft, the braking, is a little too soft - I think Acura has gone a little too softand it's upset some people, disappointed reviewers, and lost some long time fans...

They need to come out with a car with more of an edge, more hard acceleration, more hard fast braking, harder steering, and, harder suspension (but adjustable). Hopefully a new model TLX comes out to fulfill these desires (whether or not I can afford to upgrade to that model myself).

I think it's actually good for 450 ft-lbs?

It's true that I didn't try the 8ZF yet, but it can't be the 7DCT is that much worse compared to it. I never feel mine honestly. Maybe when not yet fully warmed up, but never to the point that it annoys me.

I drove both when i bought my TLX and the two don't even compare. You can just tell the TLX is so much more car and much more of a premium vehicle. The ONLY advantage the ILX should have is the fact it's 400 lbs lighter and should be faster in a straight line.
