LED foglights possibly aimed too low?

I had my local Acura dealer install the OEM LED foglights to my 2.4 Tech the other day and it aesthetically looks great from the outside, however, driving there is NO indication visually that you actually have them on. Well, if you crane your neck close to the windshield you can see where there seems to be some additional light output from the sides but nothing to the front. I took an on and off pic of them pointing at my garage door when I got home.

My thinking, which is a completely lay person opinion, is that the cut off the fogs should meet the bottom part of the cut off of the LED headlights on the garage door and not have that noticeable gap. Any thoughts?

It is a good question.

Others might offer more useful opinions, but the fogs may not "project" but just shed light. Especially in comparison to the LED headlights you may just not get anything noticeable compared to them.

I also thought fogs were suppose to shine low to illuminate under the fog. I think modern foglights might be a visual aesthetic only and not really that functional, especially with how bright modern headlights are. Other cars will definitely see them and it will change your light signature from the front.

Edit: They look good though. Although the TLX doesn't look like they are missing anything without them because there is the nice black plastic. Unlike the pre-refresh RDX that had holes were fogs should go but were absent on non tech models.

They look like they are doing what they are supposed to do. Provide a low physical light level that will help eliminate reflect back in fog. Most real ones go on & switch the main headlights off.

What you get now days are called fog lights but they are neither fog or long range driving lights, just decorations.

^^Agree. The instance of fog and the need for fog log lights is small compared to fog lights being on all the time.

this is how low mines are too, at that point you cant even see themt from the inside, i had the same question if there is a high level where they should go

Here's a little graphic I put together when I was messing around with fog lights. There are a couple different guidance that I came across and this method of adjusting seemed to be the most thorough and logical.




Basically, park on a flat surface so that the face of your fog light is 25-feet away from a vertical, light colored wall.

Measure the vertical distance from the ground to the center of the fog light (at the car). Then adjust the cutoff so it is that height minus the value in the graphic (at the wall; it is dependant on the height range of the light on the car).

You might ignore the 14.5" note on my graphic, that was specific to my wagon, YMMV.

It seems fog lights with today's LED and HID lights are just installed for cosmetic looks. (From what I have read many times online.)

Isn't the real proof of the pudding in how they work when it's foggy?

last time i was in the fog and you couldnt even see that thefog lights were on or off

That will not work because AFAIK the headlights stay on. One thing you can do when you hit a patch of fog at night switch back & forth between your regular lights & your high beams. Look to see if you lose vision with the high beams from light bounce back off the water droplets.

You won't see the light from the fog lights in the fog, because the light doesn't get reflected back to your eyes, like the low and high beams headlights.

The fog lights illuminate the markings and features lying low on the roads under heavy fog, instead of you seeing a wall of white reflected light.

Good info! I'll def have to look more into this when I have the time!

I took some pics last night of the for light beam throw in a parking lot. I think part of what threw me off was that in prior cars I've had (TSX for example) the fogs were halogen so you could definitely see the warmer yellow light mixed in with the white of the HIDs. So I guess the LED fogs are doing what they're supposed to do, but I do think like many of you said, these days fog lights are really 85% looks and 15% functional.
