Honda announces end of v-6 for Accord.

Honda announced for 2018, no more Accord v-6. Only the engine from the civic type r.

What's that mean for Acura.

If what I heard is true (from the development rep that took me around in a pre-production NSX), then there is a twin turbo V6 coming to Acura to headline the TLX-Type S. No idea if the V6 will be based on the J series or if it will be an all new design. I'm assuming all new because the J series is SOHC and still uses a timing belt.

If they pattern the 2G TLX powertrains like the Accord then they'll effectively kill off the model altogether (so to speak).

From what I was told, Acura is trying to get some skin back in the game, so I doubt a 1.5T will be around. I could see a 2.0T as a base engine for several models though, then V6's for higher trims.

The TLX Type S would have a TT-V6; that much was confirmed to me. What wasn't confirmed is the power level. They are shooting for 400 hp though.

But really though...

What else will that engine be in?

Do you really, honestly, think HondAcura will develop an engine for *one* car alone? I'll gladly eat my words if it happens, but I'm not convinced.

It's possible that it could power higher trims of the next gen MDX and RLX. Both vehicles have V6's now so I could see the jump happening.

Already a test drive.
Fewer cylinders, more turbo | 2018 Honda Accord Powertrain Prototype First Drive - Autoblog

The engine itself is less exemplary; it just feels, pulls, sounds and acts like every other modern turbocharged four-banger paired to a many-geared transmission.
Sounds like another boring, forgettable 2.0Toy.

Wait a sec... Are you talking about the V6TT they're running in the Pike's Peak TLX?

Acura is bringing a 500-horsepower TLX to 2017 Pikes Peak

Which, if I'm thinking correctly, is a version of the motor that Realtime Racing was campaigning in the GT car for the past few years (as a RWD TLX). I'm pretty sure it's safe to say none of that will make it into the barely afloat Acura lineup.

But it's a nice dream.

I don't ever see this happening. Ford currently has a twin turbo 3.0l making 400hp and 400lb/ft mated to their version of SH-AWD in the continental and MKS(Z?). The 2.0T in the accord is going to be a detuned version for fuel economy. The most I see Acura doing is a 2.0T tuned slightly more than the civic type R and therefore they think they will get away with it. This is still Acura at the end of the day.

i just find find it that Acura will really release a 400HP anything, other than maybe a NSX.

This. History has shown Acura has no interest in any sort of real performance. They take average economy level cars, add leather, maybe add AWD, and then let marketing do the rest.

And who told you that Acura's prospect buyers want that? And what are you doing here again?

Go back to your 2.0T, thanks.

How many Infiniti/Nissans use the Red Sports 400hp engine......one, just the Red Sport. I'm amazed they have not put that engine in the 370Z.

But I agree with you that Acura is way too conservative, but I would like them to prove both of us wrong.

The 370Z is what, \8 years old now? They are gonna be making a new one soon and I bet it will have the 3.0T 400hp engine.

I believe Acura is working on an Acura exclusive powertrain. What is it gonna be? No idea.

I have expressed doubt in Acura in the past, but if Ikeda is getting his way, maybe there is an Acura specific powertrain. That would be awesome.

something like this is exactly what Acura needs to retain me as a customer. If not I'm outta here.

If Acura does make this happen, it will approach Lexus in my level of interest. Just the idea that maybe Acura is its own company with real, upscale performance models.

As I mull over pulling the RS400 trigger in 18 months, . A 360hp+ TLX with SH-AWD would keep me in the Acura camp for the next generation.

Right. Standard AWD on the top end TLX model. Limit the FWD options across the board.

If Accord 2.0T has about 260+ lb-ft of torque from 1700-1800 rpm and weight about 3300 lb, it will definitely be quicker than TLX. Not good for "precision crafted performance" slogan..

I was bewildered at first too, but the rep was telling me that Jon Ikeda is really trying to bring back the glory days at Acura. He wants to have the brand compete again in the performance arena it seems. The TLX A-spec is the first step towards that goal, even if it is a stop gap. They are gonna go all out in the next generation.

From what I read in article, the 10 speed behaves like the 9ZF in that it too is lazy in changing gears. The big problem is that it has a lot of torque at low rpm, it'll destroy the 4 cy TLX even with the DCT.

Isn't the 8sp DCT an Acura exclusive? Yet they screwed it up by not making it beefy enough for V6 applications. With the 2.0L turbo now coming along, is the DCT dead to be replaced with Honda's 10 speed?

Acura's engineering did many things wrong in the past, can't see them being too creative with Honda's limited budget

Good. This will force the consumers to at least look or move up to Acura if they want a V6 and if they want to stick within the Honda family or another brand if it doesn't work out. It's a smart move IMO.

I completely disagree. There is no such thing as forcing people to move up when they can't afford it.

You can't assume because someone shops for a certain make or model that they cannot afford to buy or look into another brand or model. It's based on their budget and if they are flexible enough then they certainly can afford it.

Great. Well this sucks. I'm buying a 301hp camry next. Why? Because even if the accord is pushing 306hp like the CTR (which it wont), I sure as fuck don't want to be pushing even more fucking boost through that engine.

Soooo honda just gave us all the big fuck you. They don't want us fiddling with their cars for more power anymore. Unless of course you aren't concerned about reliability.

Don't see that happening. What I do see them doing is adding the Sport Hybrid to the TLX and calling it a day. As much as I hope a Type S would come I don't think they will bring it back with the track record they've had. I'll be happy to be wrong though.

The writing has been on the wall for some time now. This pretty much sums it up:

"No. Never in the last five years." Junji Yamano, chief engineer and leader of Accord development, confidently tells us when asked if a V6 was ever really on the table for his new midsize sedan. Through a translator, the engineer gives the same pitch every other carmaker gives when making this switch: flatter torque curve, earlier low-end power, increased fuel economy ... when not on boost."

Then of course there's this: ( 2018 Honda Accord Kills the V6, Adds Type R Engine » AutoGuide.com News )

"Honda says only about 10 percent of Accord buyers were choosing the V6."

It would be interesting to see the breakdown of sales in the TLX for the I4 vs the V6. Part of me thinks when people move up to the semi-luxury segment they do so for a smoother V6 experience, but I'm likely tarnished a bit by Internet forums which cater to the 10%. I think it does make sense for Honda/Acura to use engines as a differentiation between the two car lines but given the move to hybrid stuff I suspect it will be more along the lines of a V6 (base model) with a V6 Sport hybrid model (Type S) vs a TTV6. The upcoming RDX redesign will show us the direction Acura is moving in.

If idea is to use sport hybrid as Type S, they should have done it during MMC. Why wait when you have all ingredients ready and MDX sport hybrid getting good reviews?

I thought that this was interesting and may indicate the possibility of a fairly sporty Accord model (although Honda's sport models have terrible package options IMO):

Backing up this motor is another semi-shared part, the 10-speed automatic we've just sampled in the all-new Odyssey. Honda wasn't ready to confirm what, if any, changes were made to the transmission itself for this application beyond a unique torque converter.

The other big news on the powertrain front is the availability of a six-speed manual with either of the two conventional engines. "Based on Civic and Type-R, we know that the characteristics of these engines are very good with a manual transmission," a Honda rep tells us; Having just stepped out of a Type-R, we couldn't argue. And because we're not accountants or profit-focused product planners, we're not going to argue with their decision to include a manual transmission at all. As expected, the Accord remains front-drive regardless of engine and transmission.

This is good news -- Honda has recognized what many of the other manufacturers figured out a few years ago.

All the moaning about the changes in mainstream engine configurations will go away as people realize that the 2.0T allows them to have their cake (performance) and eat it too (efficiency). There will still be NA V6 engines out there, but they will be either niche models or the offerings of the laggards that are even further behind Honda.

you only hope thats not happening since you hate the Acura brand so much. I can tell you this. I've had lunch with Jon Ikeda (no it was not a one on one but with group of 15 people) . I asked him about the power plant on the Type-S and he wouldnt tell me exactly what they intended to do but he said that the power would need to be "significant" to justify the badge. That is why they did not release a Type-S this year. 2.0T is not in the category of significant. He wants the Type-S to compete directly with the Audi S-Line and Lexus F series. I best guess would be a Turbo V6 or a Sport Hybrid.

the 2.0 is coming straight from the TYPE R! detuned and less efficient turbo, but still the same engine...
the type R produces 300hp and as much torque i think...
stuff it into the Accord and you'll have a sub 300hp car...probably even higher output than the outgoing Accord!!! which i think it's at 278hp

change is scary!
but accept the changes!!! as it has more power and better fuel economy than a v6!!!
also, Honda put a 2nd harmonic balancer in the 2.0T to provide smooth V6 like engine
