2015 TLX FWD Base: Normal vs Sport mode on IDS
Hi All,
When selecting Sport mode on the IDS does it keep the tranny in the lower gear for longer time? Or is it the same as in Normal mode?
What are the main differences in the modes?
Thanks.

Econ (Econ mode)
Maximizes fuel economy.
Normal (Normal mode)
Provides the best balance of fuel economy and sportiness for
everyday driving.
Sport (Sport mode)
Enhances vehicle response and feel with decreased steering
assist. Also increases throttle response and SH-AWD* control.
Sport+ (Sport+ mode)
Adds to Sport mode to allow for increase performance when
using the steering wheel paddle shifters.

It (Sport mode) tends to hold it a little longer while accelerating, changes the steering assist to less, decreases gas pedal travel before response occurs, and the SH-AWD becomes more aggressive (but you asked about FWD, so that doesn't apply).
Sport + mode is very aggressive, it does all the things Sport does, to a greater degree. Furthermore, it also locks out gears 8 and 9 (I think just gear 8 for the I4 since it doesn't have a 9th, someone with the I4 should confirm if it locks out 7th and 8th instead). In addition, when you use the paddle shifters in Sport+ mode, the gear you choose with the paddle will hold until you change it (or hit the redline, in which case it'll upshift, or slow too much so that you'd be lugging the engine and then it'll downshift). Sport+ mode also aggressively downshifts as you brake (in automatically controlled mode). if you want to get back to automatic mode when you've hit the paddles in Sport+, you have to either press D again, or switch to a different IDS mode. In V6 cars, I believe Sport+ disables VCM while it's active.
Normal mode is just a balance. Longer gas pedal travel for a response, slightly more relaxed steering.
Econ mode relaxes everything further, to the point it feels a bit sluggish and lazy. This mode is aimed to save fuel. One way it does that is by cutting back on the AC use, the compressor won't work as hard and the car will take longer to cool down. Not recommended on a very hot day. I never use Econ anyway, it sucks. And the fuel economy difference is negligible between Econ and Sport unless you're highway cruising, and even then it's not huge (~5-10%).

It is rev matching. But it's not the smoothest process for some reason, likely due to either the torque converter lockup clutch being engaged often on this transmission for fuel efficiency reasons, or some other reason.

Just tried this on my 2016 ilx. Holding the upshift paddle shifter for about 3 seconds does in fact bring it back to auto sport mode. Thanks for the tip! I always had to manually move the shifter to D then back to S in order to do that
