2015 TLX 30K Maintenance

Hi all,
I am really bad on dealing with maintenance people in Acura Dealership..
Wish to have your help to decide what needs to be done for my 2015 TLX 30K maintenance.
Really wish to have a professional to teach me to save some money, but use the money to the right place.
Thanks,

It's helpful to know what good brand new parts look like vs worn out or broken.
with 30k miles, the car is still brand new. Regular oil change intervals are welcomed! This is kept track on the onboard computer, or the MID. It'll beep and scream at you when you need one done.
2nd I would inspect brake pads to see if there is still a lot of meat or material left. If worn down, replace.
At 30k the car shouldn't need a whole lot, as you haven't driven it that much.
For actual DIY videos, check out YouTube. Most Honda's are the same, pick a current model if there aren't any videos on the tlx specifically

Your car came with a maintenance schedule in its documentation. Look to see what 30K requires if there is a 30K requirement. Anything not on the list is not required unless something unusual has happened.

All the SA's love people who walk in not knowing what is required. Because since they are on commission they can sell you all kinds of fuel injector treatments, fluid flushes and anything else they can think of.

Almost all regular maintenance items can be done DIY by any reasonably competent person.

Do what your manual says and when the MID reminds you on your dash. If you start doing regular maintenance when the dealer suggests as well as when the MID suggests and don't keep track, you'll end up doing things multiple times when you don't need to. If they try to charge you $100 to do engine filter, cabin filter, or wiper changes, understand that each probably take less than 5-10 minutes to change. Realistically you can do all those by yourself with minimal effort.

The first thing I do when I get a new car is to set up a spreadsheet of the items listed in the owners manual (not what the Acura dealer wants you to do), along with all of the major systems. Then I use the maintenance minder to remind me when to do basic work. I record all work done by me or someone else in the spreadsheet....also keep all records by date in a paper file. I let the dealer do the required work up until the warranty expires and then I do almost everything else (they do timing belt and other involved jobs). This site and YouTube have tons of videos will take care of most of the basics. Find a mentor if possible or find a independent shop that others recommend in your area. Acura will always try to up-sell every service. The price for a good basic set of tools and a little time learning the basics will pay for itself in no time.

I had the transmission fluid, brake fluid, filters changed along with oil change and tire rotation at 40k miles. Acura says they're 30k mile services. I waited and did them at 40 to get the most mileage out of the fluids but also doing the proper maintenance.

A while ago, I asked a question regarding the difference in price for the transmission fluid replacement of the ZF9 vs the DCT8... no answer. On repairpal.com they mention about $220 which is quite normal, but on some ZF8 used in other brands, we saw insane costs.

I think that BMW still says that it is lifetime, even on new ZF8, On mine which had a GM tranny, I never maintained the transmission in near 90000 miles. I would have probably done it at that mileage if I were to keep it.

Actually, Acura didn't say those are 30K mile services; the dealership claimed they're 30K mile services. Acura specifically says that service intervals are based on the Maintenance Minder code (for transmission fluid, either an A3 or B3 code), and that you only need to change it at 40K miles if you drive in "mountainous areas at very low vehicle speeds."

http://owners.acura.com/utility/down...nce_Minder.pdf

*4: Driving in mountainous areas at very low vehicle speeds results in higher transmission temperature. This requires transmission fluid changes more frequently than recommended by the Maintenance Minder. If you regularly drive your vehicle under these conditions, have the transmission fluid changed at 40,000 miles (64,000 km), then every 30,000 miles (48,000 km).
They also specifically state:
Independent of the Maintenance Minder information, replace the brake fluid every 3 years.

There is no prescribed service based on fixed mileage anymore. It's based on whatever the computer says you need. See the link above for the Maintenance Minder Service Codes and what servicing each code calls for.

I downloaded an iOS app called Car Minder about 5 years ago and use it to track all maintenance and repairs for my vehicles. Having the app lets me quickly show the repair shop telling me the power steering fluid needs to be changed that it was already done 12 months and 13,000 miles ago, for example.

It's also convenient for items that do not necessarily show up in the Maintenance Minder, such as the 3 Year brake fluid reminder. When I was selling my last two cars, I printed out the export of repair and service items from the app to show prospective buyers the full repair and maintenance history of the vehicle. Every entry includes the date, mileage, service name, and free form notes that I use to note the brand (usually for oil), part number, and cost.

I even use it for my house to track when we have repairs on items like the HVAC and to remind me quarterly to change the furnace air filters.

I don't mean to sound like a commercial but thought the OP could use something like this in addition to following the car's MM.

Thank you all for the answers!
My 2015 TLX is 9-speed transmission (the buttons) and I meant a service guy which looked nice. He told me 9-speed version changes transmission fluid every 60k and non-button transmission is every 30k.
So, I did not do the transmission fluid.
I did oil change, air filter change (myself), cabin air filter (myself), tire rotation, alignment (I do with pep boys every 5k for tire warranty), break fluid.
One more question guys:
Does this car need to do 3-Step Fuel Injection and Throttle Body Service? If so, how often?
Thank y'all!

Quick answer is no its a revenue enhancer for the shop. What they do IF big IF they actually do the work is:

Step 1 Wipe the throttle body blade with a cleaner.
Step 2 drip or spray cleaner into the throttle body while the engine is running.
Step 3 Pour an injection cleaner into the gas tank.

Generally not necessary unless you run dirty filters & crappy gas. in a high mileage engine.

Save yourself about $70/75 & pour a bottle of Chevron Techron injection cleaner (not conditioner or treatment) into a 3/4 full tank & be happy. If you want to do the drip or spray there are inexpensive cleaners available to do that. If you changed a filter you can do this.

Hi guys, my question is about brakes.
My 2017 TLX has close to 30K and I bought it with 11K certified. Looks like that pads have to be replaced.
Dealer will resurface rotors as well.
Is this really nessary on 30K old car?
What do you say?
Thanks

I would say that is odd. My 2015 TLX has 70K miles, have not had to have the brake pads replaced, but I suspect it is close. I don't drive the car hard. I do feel a slight shimmy now when I apply the brakes normally, so the rotors may also need resurface. But all this is at 70K, not 30K.
