I realize there are numerous threads on this, but I figured that I should post a new one with the latest information in order to keep the momentum going on this, as I am now a victim of the same engine failure. For many this will be a recap, but new information is always coming out about this. I'm going to post this on Reddit and other Honda / Acura forums to get more of the word out.

The Honda and Acura vehicles that are involved in the recall are listed below. Here are the recalls for the United States and Canada. Only certain Vin's of these vehicles are affected to this date, so you have to look up your specific VIN on the appropriate website for the country you live in to see if you're part of the actual recall. You may have received a recall notice. Note that the Canadian recall has less model years involved, apparently.

2015-2020 Acura TLX
2016-2020 Acura MDX
2016, 2018-2019 Honda Pilot
2018-2019 Honda Odyssey
2017, 2019 Honda Ridgeline

If you own one of the vehicles listed above that is NOT included as part of the recall and have not experienced any issues related to the rod bearings, I would consider yourself lucky. You may want to reconsider how long you retain ownership. There are many people out there such as myself that HAVE experienced rod bearing failures with a vehicle that's in this vehicle list but do not have VIN's that are included in the recall. The number of reports I've seen are definitely alarming. Granted the percentages may still be low overall, but the evidence of a larger problem is growing.

For those of you that aren't aware, there are open NHTSA (PE25008) and Transport Canada (3280-08-89) investigations that are looking into whether the Canadian and American recalls for this rod bearing defect need to be expanded. Not necessarily because of the reasons stated in the original recall, but perhaps there is a larger problem affecting more vehicles.

For my own case, I got the call from Southview Acura in Edmonton on April 14, 2026 confirming my fear of a rod bearing failure. They indicated the engine needs to be replaced on my 2016 Acura MDX with 193,000 km. They quoted me CAD$9200 for a used engine with 133,000 km on it. Granted, 193,000 km (120,000 mi) is getting up there and if I hadn't become aware of all of the other failures, I would have perhaps just written it off that I got unlucky. However, after reading all the other stories similar to mine, but at less km, I feel like there's a serious defect that I was just able to avoid longer with better maintenance. I perform all the regular maintenance, not just oil changes religiously. All oil changes I've done were using high quality Mobil filters and Mobil 1 synthetic motor oil. It did not use any oil between changes and the oil looked so good at oil change time that it likely didn't need changing for quite some time, but I did them anyways.

I have filed my complaint with Transport Canada here complaint form to help them with their investigation into this lack of accountability on Honda for this serious defect and I encourage anyone else that wasn't part of the recall and has had the same issues to do the same either in Canada or the US. The NHTSA form for the US is here complaint form Reports from consumers are crucial for forcing a recall, as Transport Canada and the NHTSA uses these complaints to identify trends and evaluate the need for a recall so if you own a vehicle listed above and are not part of the recall PLEASE ensure you file your complaint in the appropriate jurisdiction.

Additionally, A class action lawsuit was filed in January, 2026 Savannah Messenger v. American Honda Motor Co. Inc. in the United States, which aims to expand the recall. The Canadian class action suits are usually filed once the US ones gain more traction, so I contacted a firm in Canada, who has had this issue on their radar for a while, even posting about it on their website. After hearing of other similar stories in Canada, they are now in the process of filing a class action lawsuit with myself as the lead plaintiff in Canada as well. I will keep you posted on the progress. You do not have to do anything in either of these jurisdictions in order to be included as part of the class action. With your ownership of an affected vehicle, you are automatically included and do not need to report your issue to the associated legal team.

I have not gone through the process of pressuring Acura to step up, we all know how that goes. I've yet to see anyone report that they have received full or partial compensation for this. I imagine that Honda / Acura are intentionally avoiding doing this in order to not appear to accept responsibility in whole or part for the failure given the ongoing litigation.

I've owned Honda and Acura vehicles and motorcycles since 1994. Up until now I've been impressed with their reliability. I had a 1992 accord and a 2012 Pilot that both were still going strong into the mid 300,000 km range when I got rid of them. My 2002 Honda VTX 1800C is still going strong and my 2015 MDX likely would be too if someone hadn't T-boned me in it.

In closing, again if you're an owner of one of these vehicles, please be wary. If you've been bitten by the rod bearing failure then definitely report it as mentioned above.
