NOLA Proposal Ideas
I know, I know :RIP:
Girl went to Tulane so we are planning a trip there and I'm going to pop the question but there are so many places. My first thought was something really public but I don't think that is her style so any ideas?
She loves horses so people suggest carriage rides but I think it is corny. She loves a little place called Lafitte's so I thought that would be kind of cool but at the same time, kind of morbit.
Dinner at the Commander and doing it in a small courtyard there?
Walk and in front of the St. Louis Cathedral?
What do you guys think?

Can't complain too much, I saved a bit of cash and it is paid for in full.
Still unsure of how to do it, I thought I would be a bachelor all my life and honestly, I was ok with that life but I guess things change. Now I'm surprisingly worried about how to ask her. Obviously, she will remember it for life so I don't want to screw it up.

Don't screw it up, like I said, just make sure it's somewhere special/significant for her

The sizzle in the Steak
Don't "overdue" it....it only screams insecurity.
Keep it simple, and nice, with a touch of romance.
If she is a keeper in any way, shape, or form, she will love you and the proposal, and won't be hung-up on it being a "certain way", or not "grand enough".

Maybe you can find out from your girl if there's a place at Tulane that she finds sorta boring or unmemorable (gym? student union? library?), then propose to her there-- it'll be a place she'll then remember fondly in the future.
..unless you screw it up...

Old Man Yelling at Clouds
Moog stole my advice.
I'm not sure when the trend started that the proposal had to be this big, orchestrated thing. Probably when they started showing up on YouTube and everyone thinks they have to keep up. I proposed back in 1989. Since then, how I proposed probably has come up twice and it got no more than a two sentence summary. I understand all women are different, but I have to believe the memory she'll keep has much more to do with what you say and the meaning behind it rather than where you are standing.
I think you have the right start - avoid a public display if you don't think that's her style. After that, where is fexible so long as you are undistracted and can focus on her. That said I think the walk in front of the Cathedral sounds good. Just pick some place where you can say what you need to say without someone or something interrupting the moment.
And congratulations! This is not !!! It means you get to face life with someone to share the ups and downs. That's a good thing.

I couldn't agree more with the "keep it simple" advice. My husband had a plan (a nice one that was appropriate to both our personalities), but instead popped the question at home a couple of days before our vacation at a moment that just felt right to him. It's not all about fanfare, though I always think it's sweet to see the thought and worry that goes into it for some of you. Good luck!
Also, go with your gut about the carriage ride. If she truly loves horses, she may be put off by the carriages. I'm a lifelong equestrian and can't abide the living conditions of most carriage horses. I don't ride in them and wouldn't want to be proposed to in one. Your girl certainly may not feel the same, but just a thought.

So.. +1 on not going on a carriage ride.

It was pretty crazy. Yeah, the poor guy had a little scratch from the carriage and kicked some shoes off but was okay otherwise. I took off when the fire trucks showed up.

Talking about carriage rides, went to see the bats under Congress, coming around I saw a bmw hit a carriage and the poor horse freaked out. The reins ended up binding up the rear legs and the horse was trying to kick out of them. Busted up the carriage, two cars and almost jumped off the bridge. I helped the carriage handler calm the poor horse down and cut the carriage reins off. She was pretty hysterical because she thought the worse, but the horse was okay and other than her busted hand, everyone else was okay as well.
So.. +1 on not going on a carriage ride.

Yeah. Funny. Want to know what's really funny? Not realizing that the camera captured it, and then hooking the fucking camera up to the TV and showing about 60 people the actual proposal minutes after she said yes. Imagine my surprise when they all saw me scratch my nuts and then bring her in to propose.

Three Wheelin'
Moonwalk overlooking the river across from the Cathedral.
Take her on the Natchez steamboat.
Carousel in City Park.
The carriage is not actually a bad idea.
Carousel Bar at the Montleone.
In front of cathedral.
