Sony drastically cuts PS3 launch allocation
Mark Raby
September 6, 2006 12:21
Tokyo (Japan) - Problems with the production of Blu-ray's blue laser diode forced Sony to cut the launch availability of its next generation video game console Playstation 3 from 2 million to 500,000 units worldwide, according to report published by AP today.
In spite of the production problems, Sony is sticking to the 17 November launch in the U.S., as well as 11 November in Japan. However, the severe shortage has caused Sony to push back the release date in Europe from 17 November to March of 2007. In the U.S., the amount of PS3 units available at launch will be a mere 400,000. Japan will get the remaining 100,000.
Rumors have been floating around for months that there were problematic production issues for the PS3, but Sony had flatly denied these allegations, up until last month. However, because of the shortage of Blu-ray components, the company had to reduce on their original production forecast.
Sony is now predicting 2 million units to be released by the end of the year. Originally, the firm had planned to ship 4 million units by 31 Dec. Sony believes it will able to catch up by March of next year and still meet the 6 million unit mark worldwide by then.

hmm... guess i should preorder 2 of them and sell the 2nd one on ebay for a marked up price like when the 360 came out
although i find it strange that the US would get 400,000 units while japan is only gonna get 100,000

i think you'll be very, very lucky to FIND 2 to sell. I think the same thing as last year will happen to retailers that take pre-orders for launch (i.e. you have to wait several weeks or months after launch to have your pre-order fulfilled)

I'm not entirely sure about the xbox 360 launch, but I *think* it was at least a million at launch
EDIT: http://www.kotaku.com/gaming/xbox-36...ers-136058.php
The final shipment of the US Consoles on the 22nd is 1,098,200. (20% of those being core systems)

The Xbox360 sold 326,000 units in November of 05. If Sony is able to launch with 400,000 units in November of 06 then they will have a better launch than Microsoft.
http://forum.pcvsconsole.com/viewthread.php?tid=11067
But that seems like a really weird distribution of PS3's. I would think that it Japan would have gotten +200K units.
My guess is that Sony is doing this to try and win the next gen HD battle

MS sold 900K in the US during 05.
Sony claims that they will ship 2 million units worldwide in 06 and 1-1.2 million will be for the US.

There is absolutely no way Sony will ship 2 million in 06. Here is some information from another forum:
- 400K at launch
- US gets 80% of output
- 100K weekly shipment to the US until Xmas.
- All units airfreighted.
- Shipping weight of 7 kg(15 pounds per box)
- Sony Shiroichi facility has a capacity of 1 million diodes/month, but the yield is running much lower than expected. Production ramp up depends on yield improvement.
If the capacity is 1 million diodes/month but Nichia's official yield is 30%, then Sony Shiroichi's current monthly output is 300K diodes/month(Sony uses a licensed Nichia process).
So the monthly PSX3 output is capped to 300K units/month pending diode yield improvement.
Based on SCEI nunbers, the maximum that could be delivered to the US before Xmas is 700K this year.(400K launch units + 3 weeks of additional shipping). Even this is optimistic.

At last, SONY's marketing machine is moving forward and the first act is this 3 minutes and 20 seconds short (5 more to come). The object of this film is to cover the "Real-time" aspect of the console, in fact it is more about the benefits of a non-scripted AI.

Word in the press room is that HDMI support for the lower-priced console is worldwide.

The PS3 is the ultimate in evil...whereas, the 360 is the ultimate in goodness and all that is justice. They cannot be in the same vicinity as one another. Gawd forbid.

And oh, there's absolutely no way the PS3 is going to play any games, power on, or even exist.
What Sony will ship you is a chunk of plastic with crudely scribbled on symbols of P, S, and 3 on the front.
This machine will be the ultimate of the suck. SUCK. Mark my words.

Damn, sony is cutting the price of the ps3 launch by 20%, at least for japan.
The price of humiliation
What might have been a day of triumph at the Tokyo Game Show saw yet another heavy blow for Sony when the troubled electronics giant said it would be slashing the Japanese launch price of the Playstation3 by around 20 per cent to yen 50,000 (£250).
*
The last-minute price drop is thought to be a response to the yen 25,000 launch price of Nintendo’s Wii – a simple, yet highly innovative games console unveiled last week and hotly tipped by games industry analysts as the likely victor in the next round of video games console wars.
Sony’s extraordinary decision suggests a plunge in confidence for a company that has dominated the past two generations of games machines.
Sony, humiliated by the recent recalls of laptop batteries and multiple delays with the PS3 launch itself, has not only staked its technological reputation on the PS3, but its reputation as an astute judge of the entertainment industry.
The success of iPod has badly tarnished Sony on the personal audio side, and the company has invested too heavily in the PS3 to allow a rival to steal its thunder in video games.
The decision to slash prices may make the machine itself a shade more attractive to the pre-Christmas market, but a greater concern raised at the Tokyo Game Show was the lack of any obvious "killer applications" – games so good that they will sell the machine itself, and which Nintendo appears to have in abundance.

However, even if you have a TV with one HDMI but want to hook up more devices via HDMI... just buy this, and you're golden...

or a little more high-end (and they also offer a 5-port if you need more then 2):

The PS3 is pretty nasty. It will not only erase everything on your computers, but it will also delete anything on disks within 20 feet of it.
It demagnetizes the strips on ALL of your credit cards. It reprograms your ATM access code and screws up the tracking on your Tivo and uses subspace field harmonics to scratch any CDs and DVDs you attempt to play. It will program your phone auto dial to call only 900 numbers. This horrid console will mix antifreeze into your fish tank.
Hell, IT WILL CAUSE YOUR TOILET TO FLUSH WHILE YOU ARE SHOWERING.
It will drink ALL your beer. FOR GOD'S SAKE, ARE YOU LISTENING?? It will leave dirty underwear on the coffee table when you are expecting company! It will replace your shampoo with Nair and your Nair with Rogaine.
If the PS3 is bought in the first week, it will leave the toilet seat up and leave your hair dryer plugged in dangerously close to a full bathtub. And worse, it will not only remove the forbidden tags from your mattresses and pillows, it will also refill your Skim milk with whole milk.
I tell you...avoid it at all costs.
BTW, check out the threads I've started on the TGS stuff...some nice stuff coming along the pipelines for this evil thing.
