Sony Announce PS3 Graphics Details
SONY ANNOUNCE PS3 GRAPHICS DETAILS

NVIDIA GeForce technology to power the sexy images streaming from your next-gen PlayStation
10:30 Sony has announced that it's teaming up with graphics specialists NVIDIA to produce the visual hardware for PS3.
The hardware, based on NVIDIA's next-generation GeForce technology that'll be familiar to PC gamers, will form the core of the PS3's GPU (Graphical Processing Unit). Sony will also use the chip in their other home electronics devices like DVD players as they move towards visual interfaces and, ultimately, a central entertainment hub.
Ken Kutaragi, the Godfather of PlayStation and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, said, "In the future, the experience of computer entertainment systems and broadband-ready PCs will be fused together to generate and transfer multi-streams of rich content simultaneously. In this sense, we have found the best way to integrate the state-of-the-art technologies from NVIDIA and SCEI."
Actual details of what the GPU will be capable of are short on the ground. Jen-Hsun Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, said, "The combination of the revolutionary Cell processor and NVIDIA's graphics technologies will enable the creation of breathtaking imagery that will surprise and captivate consumers."
Emotion Engine, anyone?
Seriously though, Huang also revealed that NVIDIA has been working with Sony since development began on PS3. "Over the past two years NVIDIA has worked closely with Sony Computer Entertainment on their next-generation computer entertainment system," he says. "In parallel, we have been designing our next-generation GeForce GPU."
Along with recent announcements concerning PS3's Cell processor (catch up here) the insides of Sony's next-gen console are slowly getting filled in. It'll still be a while until we actually get to see the thing in action - probably E3 next May if rumours are to be believed - but as soon as we do you'll know all about it.

Giving it a new name would be a disaster! Playstation is a household name, its recognized world-wide and you want them to change it?

PS3 GRAPHICS CHIP MOST POWERFUL YET - SAY NVIDIA
nVidia claim PS3 GPU "far more powerful" than anything they've previously worked on
11:26 While the arrival of PS3 is still far off into the mists of 2006, the images we're getting in our heads of how delicious the visuals are going to look are getting better and better.
After nVidia confirmed the long-held assumption that they were working with Sony on the PS3's graphics, further details about just how powerful the chip will be have emerged.
Speaking at a Silicon Valley press conference, nVidia president Jen-Hsun Huang confirmed that the company has already been working on the chip for an extended time and suggested that it would be in the region of 50 times more powerful than the PS2's graphics chip.
This was backed up by nVidia's executive vice president of marketing Dan Vivoli in comments made to the San Jose Mercury. ``This chip is going to be far more powerful than anything we've done before," he said, before reinforcing that work has been in progress for around 18 months.
nVidia have years of experience producing advanced graphics chips for PC gaming. While the PS3 chip will incorporate many elements of nVidia's next-generation PC graphics technology, it is being designed as a standalone unit and is not based on existing PC architecture.
nVidia's previously developed the GPU (graphical processing unit) for Microsoft's Xbox. Despite rivals ATI securing the contract to develop the GPUs for Xbox 2 and Nintendo's next-gen console the PS3 contract could be hugely lucrative for nVidia as their technology will also be used in Sony's consumer electronics devices like DVD players and digital TVs.
More jargon-loaded graphics news for all the next-gen consoles as it appears.

Tom Smykowski: It's a "Jump to Conclusions Mat"! You see, you have this mat, with different CONCLUSIONS written on it that you could JUMP TO!
Michael Bolton: That is the worst idea I've ever heard!
Samir: Yes, this is horrible, this idea!

the next gen of consoles is going to be interesting, all 3 appear to be loosely related through IBM. xbox2 and nex gen nintendo will both have powerpc derivatives and ati chips, ps3 will have cell (which has powerpc components) and nvidia. previously i was going to bet on xbox2 as being the hardware leader, but now ps3 might pull it off...

All 3 powered by IBM PowerPC processors
All 3 using next gen PC-based GPU's (MS & Nintendo using ATI while Sony is using nVidia) Based on their past PC GPU's, both ATI and nVidia both perform very similarly.
All 3 rumored to be using very similar amounts of system memory
Yes, all 3 will be similar, but not enough is known to jump to conclusions on which will be the best. What will determine that conclusion is the quality of the games, the peripherals available and online gaming options.
