PS4, XB1, PC, Mac: Fortnite

Surprised we don't have a thread on this. I've never had so much fun with a free game as this one. Anyone playing Fortnite?

My stepdaughter plays this. What's it about

cM3go 03-05-2018 02:11 PM

It's a multiplayer last man/team standing game, there's a huge following behind it, the game is free to play and its a lot of fun. It's not like your typical Call of Duty type games where the visuals are realistic, picture Overwatch but less Sci-fi. My buddies and I play this for countless hours.

Comparable to PUBG on XBox?

Very similar, just a little more cartoony. Fun to play and even better since it was FREE!

I don't play games whatsoever... but a friend of mine who's currently living with me, does. And I love watching.

He's pretty damn good at the game and it's enjoyable to watch him destroy people on the regular.

100 people get dropped on an island, full of ammo and various weapons. Last man standing, wins the round. I guess there's an actual game you can play, but most everyone just sticks to the online portion, as described. You can also enter in teams of up to 4, if you want.

There are challenges you can do to level up and get free stuff, like outfits for your characters, or dance moves (so when you slay someone, they end up watching you right after they get mowed down... and you can taunt them by doing silly dancing jigs). Pretty fun to watch... especially if you watch someone who's ruthless at wiping people out!

Oh cool. That explains the funny costumes I've seen in pics online.

This is the number 1 game streamed on Twitch and youtube videos of the streams have topped Youtube's charts. Mind blowing for a free game, I love to play this on the regular.

How do they make money?

Basically the in-app purchase model, there are skins, emotes and accessories (visual ones) for your character that you can purchase via v-bucks which is the Fortnite currency. They also have a season pass that over 10-12 weeks you can perform certain achievements to get exclusive skins, emotes, etc.
They have a first player version of the game you can purchase in advance and play, but they say this too will be free eventually, later this year.

Of course none of these are necessary to play or enjoy the game.

This is a pretty impressive build.

cM3go 05-14-2018 03:09 PM

Haha that's nuts... some guys are crazy builders in this game

Take-Two, Electronic Arts Plunge on Fortnite Threat

February 6, 2019

Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. and Electronics Arts Inc. both tanked in U.S. trading after the video-game publishers posted disappointing numbers, yet another sign that the phenomenal success of Fortnite is looming large on the industry.

Take-Two, the maker of Grand Theft Auto, said revenue in the quarter ending in March will be $450 million to $500 million, when analysts anticipated $609.1 million. Its shares slumped as much as 14 percent, the most since December 2009, while Electronic Arts dropped 16 percent following a similar shortfall late Tuesday. Rivals Ubisoft Entertainment SA and Activision Blizzard Inc. also fell.

Game publishers have been thrown for a loop by the phenomenal success of Fortnite, a shooting game from Epic Games Inc., which counts Chinese social media giant Tencent Holdings Ltd. as a major shareholder. The game uses a “battle royale” format that lets users start a new competition immediately after they are eliminated, an addictive feature that keeps users playing -- and just hanging out chatting -- for hours on end. Netflix Inc. said last month it considered Fortnite among its biggest competitors in vying for consumers’ attention.
