PS3 (using its full potential)

So who actually uses all of its features?

I've replaced the hard drive, its now a 250 GB. I've got a ton of MP4 files so I have a lot of high-definition videos/movies on it. Its connected to all the computers in the house through the wireless network. I've got a keyboard/mouse for it so I can surf the web. My g/f and I watch Youtube videos on it for example. Its great for a group of friends..

Am i nuts here or do others use their PS3 as well?

You've done waaaaaaay more than what I've done with it (games and DVD & Blu-Ray movie watching).

I think I will have it hooked up to stream music and videos from my PC.

I'm 50% through GTAIV, and I've watched 2 blu ray movies. Thats the extent of what I've used mine for...

What is involved in swapping out the HD?

Pretty simple - just like installing a HD in your PC.

I've customized it, [i.e. uploaded pictures to use for my wallpaper and actually downloaded the same pics on my PSP so they go together...hahaha] Its a pic of the red ring of death for xbox and actually looks pretty sick so i put it on both. then i uploaded music and stuff as well through mediashare but the program only lasted so long. I wish i could get wireless on it. how much was it? and no keyboard or mouse yet, but i have used the internet and such, its pretty neat.

I upgraded mine to 250Gb too. Super easy to do! To bad MS doesn't allow the same thing on the Xbox!

Although I have mine on the network, I have not setup any sharing with my computer. what do you use for Media Server software?

So far whenever I want to watch a DIVX file or something from my computer, I have been burning it to a CD/DVD or copying it to a thumb drive.

I don't bother using the browser as I have a computer right next to my PS3 which is better.

My PS3 is hooked up to a 22" LCD computer monitor, right next to my computer's monitor, and I share my speakers with both.

I just got mine. I will get a router shortly and network my computer to it. I'm assuming you can stream files from the computer to play files that it supports.

That's a great program! I love the fact it'll transcode formats that my 360 doesn't run native and stream it. Some bugs, but I can live with them.

I used to use my PS3 to listen to music and surf the web wireless when it was apart from my computer. But now I have the PC and PS3 next to each other.

The PS3 actually isn't bad for websurfing.

How were you able to play MKV's? Mine wouldn't do them...

Do I need to install a Codec or something? Or should the built in Codec Pack do it? What is FFShow for?

Works great otherwise though!

The program is great, but it's freaken slow.

When I play thru WMP11, the file plays instantly, and with this it takes time to buffer...
I've checked the setup, everything seems fine.

Also I ran into another problem, for example when I was watching youtube videos, everything worked fine....a few minutes later, Xbox was returning errors and blocking each video I tried to play... WTF??

What kind of connection are you using? Wireless? If so, what speed? You might have bandwidth issues.

My PS3 is wired, and my videos start immediately.

I haven't tried YouTube yet.

Even though you can do most of the same media streaming stuff with xbox/ps3, the AppleTV interface is just so fantastic.

I have wired, so it should be 100Mbps.

It's immediate playing thru WMA, but thru this tv proggy it buffers.

I guess I'll have to play with the settings.

If you guys have ideas, please post them. Thanks.

Out of curiousity wouldn't it be more efficient just to play a movie/mp3 via USB flash drive assuming you didn't mind sticking stuff on there?

let me to those of you that set up command centers through your ps3's...

do i really need a bigger HD? 40's not enough?

i'm gonna get FIFA08 through ebay. i don't want to pay full $50 (i think that's the current price in stores now) for a game that's going to be renewed in a few months.

i definitely want call of duty 4.

not sure about MGS4 though. i liked it in the past, but i'm not really into games with futuristic weapons and stuff. but i hear it's worth getting just for the graphics and story.
