PS3 80gb or 160gb?

Is it worth it to get 160gb or is 80gb more than enough?

JediMindTricks 11-07-2008 10:03 AM

i guess it depends on how much gaming you plan on doing and/or what you want to use it for (store movies, media, etc).

but i posted a link in another thread where walmart is offering a $100 giftcard with a purchase of the 80gb. only on saturday at 8am.

truaznballa25 11-07-2008 10:12 AM

i say compare the prices of getting the 160gb vs the 80gb + external HDD

Derk's K24 11-07-2008 10:29 AM

It depends on if you plan on storing a lot of stuff on there. I've got around 10 demos stored, a few cd's, and a few games and I have a ton of storage left. I bought the 80gig just in case but I'm not a huge gamer, use it mostly for blu ray. I thought 160 is overkill depending on the price difference.

RMATIC09 11-07-2008 10:49 AM

wow they have 160gig...i have a 20 gig ....lol old school

JediMindTricks 11-07-2008 10:52 AM

just swap out the hard drive and voila.

you have a 250gb.

Blind_Shooter 11-07-2008 01:45 PM

i have the original 60gb ps3 and ive never come close to filling the hard drive and i use it for games and movies. 80 should be fine unless the price difference doesnt matter to you.

The hard drive in the PS3 is user-replaceable. Get the cheaper one, and spend a little bit of cash and throw in a 250 or 300gb drive. It's probably less than the price difference of the two units. Keep an eye on slickdeals.net and the like for good deals on hard drives.

JediMindTricks 11-07-2008 02:27 PM

^:werd:

go to walmart tomorrow, and get the 80gb with the $100 gift card.

TeknoKing 11-07-2008 02:31 PM

Yeah, I still wonder why the hell I bought Xbox Elite... How can you fill up 120GB?

CS-SuperchargedTL just told me he has 500gb :yikes:

JediMindTricks 11-11-2008 01:34 PM

:damn:

that's a lot of space.

i hear it's really easy to swap out anyways. i bought the 40gb version when best buy was matching walmart's $100 off in june. i should check and see how much space i have left.

That's what I'm about to do. My PS3 has tons of demos on it and about 10GB left free....

how are you guys transferring over content from the old drive to the new one?

SG81 11-11-2008 02:17 PM

:werd: buy the cheaper one and then swap the HD

lcrazyaznl 11-11-2008 03:47 PM

I'm running a 60gb, with 35 gbs left
installed soul calibur 4
time crisis 4
wipeout hd
stardust hd
super puzzle fighter

tiguy99 11-11-2008 04:26 PM

crazy, how's that time crisis on PS3? I used to be in love with the PS1 version.

Had my ex in highschool buy my the Time Crisis game with the gun back in 1997. I asked for it on a whim and didn't think she was actually gunna go get it...well

she did!!!! Memories....ok I'm done

nbennettksu 11-11-2008 08:28 PM

so I just need to buy the low one and swap it out, it really doesnt matter?

do they all have blu ray?

JediMindTricks 11-11-2008 10:03 PM

Well theres a problem with new lcd you need these annoying sensors. on the tv.

The gun feels way too light but the new percision is pretty neat.

Also i've been dying to find out how stage 2 and 3 were since at dave and buster its way too hard haha...

theres also alot minigames and a first persion shooter with the guncon you can move around and shoot.

I like how you can install it as well cuz it speeds up the load time.

awesome, thanks.

So theres not a "base" version like the 360?

AcuraVic 11-12-2008 11:45 AM

One more thing

If you're like me, you have ALLOT of PS2 games. Well I just found out that my 3 days old PS3, 80gig does not support the PS2 games. Sony (according to their website) does not make a PS3 (in any model) that supports the PS2 games anymore. The last model they made that supports the PS2 games was made in Aug of 2007.
I might take it back to the store.

Here is the link for backwards compatability...

nbennettksu 11-12-2008 11:50 AM

shit that sucks. Oh well, better keep my ps2 also. thanks for the heads up, +1 imaginary rep point for you.

lcrazyaznl 11-12-2008 01:50 PM

Basically only the 80gb and the 60gb are the original and they plan on stop making backwards compatible.

The 60 is hardware
80gb is emulator based you need to be online and download patches.

rex. 11-17-2008 02:16 AM

I have a 320gb in my mine, 60gb was getting full. Only played a ps2 game on it once

Doom878 11-17-2008 01:57 PM

The 80GB Metal Gear Solid package no longer found in stores is the last with BC. However the newer PS3's are quieter due to the chip set.

vip_inspire 11-17-2008 06:27 PM

how do you go about upgrading the hard drive ?

BennyUnitas 11-17-2008 07:28 PM

if price is a factor for you, then get the 80gb. i have the 60gb with a few of my favorite albums, bunch of pictures a few movies and a bunch of demos and I think im starting to get close to the limit. i could do without the songs/pix considering i never listen/look at them thru my PS3. someone posted up there that you should check the price difference between gettin an 160gb or an 80+external hard drive. i've also seen youtube vids of guys modding thier PS3s and putting like 500gb cards in there...

Doom878 11-18-2008 08:05 AM

I thought the biggest lap top drive available was 350? Where is there a card that is 500? Did you mean drive? And why mod it to change the drive?

gatrhumpy 11-18-2008 08:18 AM

Does the PS3 have a Memory Stick slot for photos and videos?

agranado 11-18-2008 08:30 AM

seriously considering picking up an 80gb PS3 here.. only difference there is is that one has a smaller HDD?

No issues with quality differences?

Have they already figured out the overheating issue?

i'm pretty sure the 60gb has a slot for memory sticks (SD, CF, sony's version, etc)

the 40gb that i have doesn't.

i want to say that the 80gb and above do, but i can't say for certain.

basically, yes.

but i believe there are also subtle differences like backwards compatability (which the 60gb has), slots for memory sticks, different chipsets which may create differences in noise, etc.

lcrazyaznl 11-18-2008 10:55 AM

60 gb is hardware emulated

80 gb is software emulated for ps2 games
meaning you need to be hooked up to psn to download patches for certain ps2 games.

while the 60gb runs all hardware based.

this is what i researched.

Doom878 11-18-2008 10:56 AM

I think the 160 will have the extras except for BC. Both should be cooler than the originals. I think the 160 comes with Uncharted.

Ken1997TL 11-18-2008 11:30 AM

The 40 GB version has NO backwards compatibility with PS2 games. I bought one, i dont have any PS2 games so its not an issue. I have laptop hard drives sitting around for a swap as needed :D

gatrhumpy 11-18-2008 12:32 PM

The PS3 60GB version DOES have a Memory Stick slot for AVCHD files.

Damn. I might have to look into this. Anyone want to take my Sony BD-300 Blu-Ray player + cash for a Sony PS3 60GB version?

fsttyms1 11-18-2008 12:48 PM

Man a quick Youtube search on replacing the PS3 hard drive and Damn did they make it easy to upgrade. A way to transfer files onto a back up and a way to format the drive in the PS3..

JediMindTricks 11-18-2008 01:05 PM

yea i haven't tried it, but i hear it's so simple.
