Nintendo: Mini NES Classic

Wasn't sure where to put this, so starting a new thread. At $60, might have to pick one up.

Nintendo doubles down on nostalgia with the $60 mini NES Classic Edition console | GamesBeat | Games | by Paul Sawers

Nintendo has been laughing all the way to the bank this past week with the runaway success of the Pokemon Go augmented reality mobile app, but the Japanese gaming giant isn’t done cashing in on nostalgia quite yet.

The company has just announced a re-imagined version of its classic Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) console from the early 1980s, fittingly titled the NES Classic Edition.

Launching on November 11 for a suggested price of $59.99, the NES packs a much smaller form factor this time around, and judging by the promo shots it sits neatly in the palm of your hand. It also ships with 30 built-in games, including Super Mario Bros., Balloon Fight, Castlevania, Donkey Kong, Final Fantasy, Ghosts ‘n Goblins, Pac-Man, and the Legend of Zelda. The console also comes replete with an HDMI cable to plug into your new-fangled HD TV.

“We wanted to give fans of all ages the opportunity to revisit Nintendo’s original system and rediscover why they fell in love with Nintendo in the first place,” explained Reggie Fils-Aime, president and COO of Nintendo’s American arm, in a press release. “The Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition is ideal for anyone who remembers playing the NES, or who wants to pass on those nostalgic memories to the next generation of gamers.”

The console comes with the same familiar controller that shipped with the original NES all those years ago, and for 2-player games you can buy an extra controller for around $10. It would’ve been neat had Nintendo infused the controller with some modern-day smarts such as wireless connectivity, but perhaps that would’ve been too much of a deviation from the original gaming experience.

Interestingly, the controller can be connected to the Wii Remote controller and used to play additional NES games virtually on a Wii or Wii U too for a more “authentic” experience.

We’ve seen a wave of nostalgia across the gaming realm in recent times, and today’s news comes a few months after Sinclair ZX Spectrum announced plans to target retro fans with a new handheld console. Indeed, retro gaming is more than a fad — it’s a growing market, with publishers increasingly releasing collections and remasters of older classic.

The timing of the NES Classic Edition’s launch, six weeks before Christmas, is notable too — this could go down as one of the most popular gifts this holiday season.

Sounds like a hard drive based system, no cartridges.

thoiboi 07-14-2016 10:18 AM

but blowing on those cartridges to make sure they work was the whole appeal of them!

:tomato:

justnspace 07-14-2016 10:19 AM

the retro feel for 60 bux plus an extra controller for 10.. not bad if all your expectations are retro gaming.

Sarlacc 07-14-2016 10:29 AM

This will be the hot holiday item where they don't make that many, and every one wants it, and its on ebay for $500.

Whiskers 07-14-2016 11:15 AM

Things like these are fun for 30 minutes.

No light gun and no Duck Hunt = No Interest

JMS71585 07-14-2016 01:12 PM

^ Loved Duck Hunt. One of the most entertaining games they had to offer. Their 30 game lineup is not too bad though.

doopstr 07-14-2016 08:36 PM

In for one. Hell people used to pay $50 just to get Super Mario 3 in the 80s. Excitebike was one of my favorites.

Rapture 07-15-2016 03:25 AM

Ha, no Contra! Have fun wasting your money on that!

Super C doesn't count. It's not... Contra.

Doom878 07-18-2016 07:16 AM

Just down an emulators and a shitload of roms. Laptop to TV via HDMI. All you need is a controller

doopstr 07-19-2016 09:30 PM

I'm a simple man.

Doom878 07-22-2016 07:23 AM

I hope Sega releases a similar style Genesis so I can hear Genisis does what Nintendon't.

doopstr 07-22-2016 05:23 PM

Wonder if I should preorder 100 of these, then sell on eBay for $590 each?

What would be really pimp is if the thing had an app store.

ZipSpeed 08-29-2016 12:07 PM

It's too bad Nintendo didn't add a memory card slot where they can release yearly bundles for the system. That said, I already told my wife what my Christmas present is going to be this year!

Sarlacc 11-11-2016 10:38 AM

Managed get an order into GameStop last night for one.

But it since it's not guarantee I went out this morning. Every place has lines and allocations a LOOOOW. I drove by a GameStop with 5 people in line so I'm trying my chances.

I want ant to say Nintendo is botching. But they are doing what they always do...short supplying to create demand. And it's working.

00TL-P3.2 11-11-2016 10:53 AM

Read an article that Nintendo may do variations in the future. A sports model with sports game, action, RPG, etc.

I'd be interested in an RPG version.

Sarlacc 11-11-2016 11:46 AM

They had 12. So I'm getting one. They handed out tickets.

Yeah. I figured Nintendo purposely excluded expandability to make and sell more little systems for more money.

Would've been nice if they made the base console expandable, either via web downloads or an expansion card.

Costco 11-11-2016 12:38 PM

I heard they are going for $400 on eBay. As in someone tried to click "buy" just to see, and it was already sold.

fsttyms1 11-11-2016 12:55 PM

My wife is mad at me that i didnt go stand in the line at Best Buy that wrapped around the side of the building to get one this AM. Id still like to get one for the kids to play though.

Doom878 11-11-2016 01:16 PM

I've read 5 or 6 in some retailers. I've seen ebay listings as high as $10k :rofl::rofl:

Sarlacc 11-11-2016 02:05 PM

Fuck. I'd sell right now for 10k

even though I'm having fun playing it :-)

Doom878 11-11-2016 03:29 PM

Take the profit and play it on your top of the line Mac with an emulator ;)

Whiskers 11-11-2016 03:30 PM

I want it but I can wait until its on sale for $39.99 in a few months

Nintendo is very slow to drop their console prices. Even the Wii U hasn't dropped with the announcements of its cancellation and replacement.

gatrhumpy 11-15-2016 01:24 PM

So you're saying that I have no hope that this will be joining my household for $63 this Christmas season?

Personally, I'm waiting for the mini SNES classic.

Mizouse 11-15-2016 03:16 PM

I'd camp out for a mini SNES too, if I could download the games I want.

Walmart will give you a chance to buy the NES Classic every day this week

Getting your hands on the NES Classic is pretty difficult right now. The hit of nostalgia only costs $60, so it’s out of stock at basically every retailer worth talking about.

To try and give people a fighting chance at owning the tiny console (and drive holiday-time shoppers to its website), Walmart has announced that it will sell a limited quantity of the NES Classic on its site every day this week.

The flash sale will happen every day at 5PM ET. You’ll have to be fast, as the sale today — which wasn’t as widely advertised — sold out in minutes.

All times are GMT -5. The time now is 07:50 AM.
