i7-860 vs. i7-920, X58 vs. P55

I'm having a hard time wading through all the gory details comparing Intel's latest offerings. The 860 seems like a better overall CPU right now. That said, I've seen mention that the 860 has a limitation of only being able to run SLI/Crossfire in 8x/8x whereas the 920 can run both cards at 16x.

Is this an actual limitation of the CPU or os this a limitation of the P55 chipset which seems to be the de-facto motherboard pairing with the 860. You can run an 860 in an X58 board, right? Would that combo give you full 16x SLI/Crossfire?

BTW - I have zero interest in overclocking and the machine will be almost exclusively used for gaming so I'm seriously doubting I'd ever notice the difference between the P55's dual channel vs. the X58's triple channel memory. Seem like a reasonable assumption?

Unfortunately x58 and p55 are different sockets. X58 is 1366 pin and P55 is 1156. The new p55 stuff has the pci controller on the cpu and is supposed to be geared more towards middle to low end consumers while the x58 is supposed to support the expensive tripple channel memory and 6 to 8 core processors.

Personally I've always been a single graphics card guy, which the 1156 stuff does just fine. but I think it stems from not being able to sell my dad on two voodoo cards in the late 90's.

Yeah, I just realized the socket differences about 20 minutes ago. I could swear I had seen something on Intel's site that stated X58 supported the i7-860 but definitely appears that's not the case. Looks like I may be back to the same basic system config I've had in my head for the last month or so.

The goal I'm shooting for is one I think you'll understand Stapler. I want to be able to bury all the sliders when rFactor2 comes out next year.

Heh, well I'll keep praying for a dx11 card that can do that by itself.

I'm glad they got that centralized website set up, I am too afraid to screw up my mod's most of the time.
