Halo 2 update
Last week the rumor mill churned out some interesting information new multiplayer maps for Halo 2. The speculation was based on content prematurely posted on Microsoft's Korean Xbox site and which briefly appeared on EBgames.com.
Today we learned that the majority of the info was true. This morning Bungie.net posted an update confirming that nine new multiplayer maps will be released over Xbox Live and through retail outlets as part of a Halo 2 Multiplayer Map Pack. The release will be staggered and will include both free and paid content for Live subscribers. The developer also announced an immenent auto-update that will address bugs, glitches, and some gameplay balancing issues.
Here is the schedule: the first two maps are free and will be released in late April as downloads. At the same time, Bungie will offer two additional maps for purchase over the online service. All nine maps will also be available on a retail disc for a suggested price of $19.99. The release date of this disc has yet to be announced, but it will coincide with the availability, as a paid download, of the remaining five maps over Live. All of the maps are scheduled to be free downloads by late summer. The retail disc will also include a documentary, a cinematic extra, all of the updates released so far, and some unannounced extras.
Shortly before the release of the first map Bungie will also roll out an Xbox Live auto-update. Bungie says that while it is a small file, it will address bugs which led to glitches, cheats, and exploits. For gamers who have been put off by cheaters, this may be the best reason to jump back into online play. The patch will also include improvements for split-screen display and tweaked melee and grenade combat.
As for playlists, because the first two maps are free they will be integrated into the current playlist structure. To handle the short term "premium" content Bungie will add special playlists that are only accessible to people who have downloaded the content. Eventually, when all of the content is free, the special lists will be integrated into the game.
The first two maps (the free ones) are Containment and Warlock. Containment is a large, icy outdoor level with two fortified bases. Each base has a vehicle entrance that is activated by a switch in the center of the map. The default vehicles for the map are Warthogs, Scorpions, and Banshees. Warlock is a small-to-medium map built with Slayer mode in mind. The level is based on Wizard from Halo, but with extra architecture and improved visuals.
The next two maps are Turf and Sanctuary. Turf takes place in the war-torn streets of Old Mombasa and is tailored for long range shoot-outs and snipers. The level features catwalks that can be destroyed to isolate players above the street. The fourth map is a midsized outdoor map designed for modes like Territories and Oddball.

First they fix the glitches / cheats and then they release the new content.
There is no specific date, but since there are two weeks left in April I would say fairly soon...

Just downloaded the autoupdate.
Took about 5 seconds, was quick and painless.
I haven't played yet to see how the changes effect the game since I just wanted to see if it was available

Q: Will there be any other ramifications from the autoupdate?
A: Yes, notably, you will find lag is actually a little worse for a couple of days. After your system is autoupdated, it "retrains" the software responsible for finding the best connection speeds. That means that your first few sessions will get progressively better until your Xbox is fully conditioned to find the best network speeds. So don't panic. You will also notice longer loading times initially, as maps and other data are re-cached onto your Xbox. Those will vanish rapidly.
