Can you explain zoning to me? I'm tired of getting my ass kicked by little kids on live.

Just got my X-Arcade Dual, and so far its great!

I ended up picking it up used from someone locally off Craigslist.

Build quality is excellent. I had to take it apart to adjust one of the microswitches on the 2nd player joystick, and looking around, the construction is excellent.

Besides that, here are some additional notes.

The two sets of controls are kind of close together. If anyone plans on getting this, I would recommend getting the Tankstick as it has 2 controls, plus a trackball. The trackball is in the middle, so spaces the 2 players apart more.

The "1-player" button is kind of close to the first player control buttons. It sometimes gets accidentally pressed while playing which pauses the game.

In order to activate the controller on the system (like pressing the PS button), you have to press the "Control" (on the side of the unit), plus the "1-Player" buttons. Luckily the guy selling me the controller told me this, otherwise I would have been scratching my head for awhile...

The default config is for the joystick to be the D-pad. When in this mode, I cannot hold the joystick to the left for more than a couple of seconds. The fix for this is to press the "control" button, and to press the Triangle button. This will switch the joystick to be the left analog stick. The joystick can also be the right analog stick by pressing Control + R1 by the way.

The X-Arcade CAN work on a 360, but you will need an adapter called the XFPS. I don't have a 360, so cannot confirm this, but here is more info on that if you want:

Well, if you are using a character with projectiles (i.e. Guile, Ken, Ryu, et al)...zoning is the ability to keep the opponent at a distance. As well as knowing when to move in. Also, know which attacks can knock an opponent out of midair when they do come towards you after you launch that fireball is very useful.

Knowing combos and how to chain them from normal punches/kicks is also important. Since SFIII, the old days of being able to sit back and fireball-dragonpunch-and-repeat are kinda over...

I dunno, for some people, this is referred to as being "cheap". But, in my opinion, fighting is fighting and all bets are off. As a courtesy, the only thing I do is allow for the opposition to throw me if I throw them...but, that is something I learned from playing alot of arcade many years ago and getting alot of angry people complaining about my throws (although, my argument is: if I were Zangief, am I supposed to back off on a piledriver?!?)...anyhow, I digress.

I'm sure really good players like rise et al posting in this thread can also add in some tips!

Yeah we used to play with "no throws" except for Zangief. But now those fuckers online try to throw you. I guess we're just old school.

No throws was a given back in the day. I have to put in some more time on this game. It's been a while.

Back then, no throws, no cornering were the unofficial rules. It's different now...watch any of the SF professional players and they are all playing with corner trapping and other things once considered "cheap"...

throws can be countered. tick-throwing a big part of the game. otherwise your opponent can sit and block all your attacks all day.

check out the #1 xbox live player "haru tejyo" in SSF2THD play as zangief. every time he lands a light kick, he goes into SPD; the opponent only has 1 frame to escape (pretty much nothing he can do about it). Is this cheap or strategy? Is it cheap to play as Dhalsim and never let your opponent get close to you?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0sPVHL3JYQ

At least with SF IV I think the game is balanced well enough for there to be less of a 'cheap' argument. I'm on the fence about the SSF2THD 'cheap factor' though. The timing is so strict on that game that an average player vs high level player would have no chance and would feel he was being 'cheaped'.

Excellent points, dude. The whole point of Capcom building in the ability to get out of throws now is to counter that supposed crying over throws before...but, I've always maintained that throwing is in the game, it should be allowed.

I only stopped throwing because #1, I didn't want to get beat up in the arcade by angry poor losers and #2, it's not worth it arguing a point that everyone seems to believe in.

And oh, I'm all for "corner trapping"...hell, that's how certain characters can win (i.e. Blanka, Fei Long)...Man, I need to buy this game.

A couple things I noticed about throws in SF4 is that you now have to press Weak Punch and Weak Kick together in order to do the throw. This makes it alot less likely to do "accidental" throws.

The other thing is that throws are now very weak and don't take much energy from your opponent. Although it is visually appealing to see the throw, it is not very effective unless you are just trying to get your opponent away from you.

Well, there are copies now. But, there are no controllers available and my budget for buying "toys" has been spent already this month...

It'll likely be an April pick-up...and by then, hopefully the Mad Catz Fightpads are out.

Finally unlocked Gouken! took me all damn night; had no problem with the 1 perfect, 3 ultra finishers, and 5 first hits, but bitch ass Seth kept making me start over. I hate that fucker! Fuck Capcom for putting this asshole in the game. The only reason I haven't bought the game yet is because of Seth.

BTW, this was done on the PS3 version, I gave up playing the 360 version because the standard controller sucks for it. To me the PS3 version plays much better.

Analog on the 360 controller is nice, that's what I use. The d-pad is horrible.

agreed. the 360 dpad sucks big time. the analog is better but i still had problems with it. perhaps it is the placement on the controller.

I could handle playing fighters on the dualshock d-pads for a little bit but I could never pull off a 360 on a d-pad.

Analog stick on the xbox360 pad was good when I used it for SSF2THD

I think the opposite, I find that the throws are still very effective, especially when playing very defensively.

I'm at 32 or so here, I haven't beaten the challenges yet, I'm at LVL20 on the Survival challenge on normal difficulty. One of the 360 achievements is to beat the game with every character on medium difficulty or higher, and I'm half way done with that.

How much BP(battle points) do you have btw?

I think I have 2000 BP or so. I don't play ranked much. I haven't finished any of the challenges either. It's hard for me to find big chunks of time to do the challenges; so I just stick to getting my butt kicked in player matches.

Just got the achievement for beating the game with all characters on Medium or higher difficulty.

Tip: Use your best character to get to Seth and then use the character you haven't beaten the game with to beat Seth, it will count as beating the game with that character.

I did it the old fashion way for all the characters except one and then on the last one I tried the above method and it worked to get the achievement, it saves you guys from a lot of frustration. lol

Ok, i just got the PS3 version yesterday at lunch and played for about 5 hours... my fucking thumb is purple and hurts like hell lol. Anyways, I haven't played this game (original SFII) since back in 7-8th grade where I used to always win local tournaments. I could do anything with every character. Now I feel like a complete newbie again.

I played online for about an hour and only won 2 of about 20 matches. lame

How do you actually beat the game or unlock new chars? Also, I'm having problems doing ultra moves.

I really want a fight stick.

How did you like fighting that asshole Seth?

BTW did you play the PS3 or 360 version.

Yeah I unlocked him too. To me he seems A BIT easier in VS mode rather than Arcade mode, but still cheap as hell. Also the red version of him looks downright weird.

PS3. We were using the Mad Catz Fightpad. It's better than the Sixaxis for sure...but, still, not perfect.

And WTF on Seth. And certainly, even on Medium, you need to pay attention or the computer will spank you...but, when I took on Seth. Yeah, he handed my @$$ to me in the 2nd round (and 3rd)...

It took about 3 tries to beat him.

I tried the demo of RE5 and hated the control of it. I have RE4 for the Wii and it's basically a 3rd person shooter with badass story.
