Should I race a '99 328?
So my friend has a manual 328is and he wants to race my all stock 01 clp? Should i even bother or would he walk on me. He also has an a4 '04, he says that he can walk on me with both cars.
I traded my 95 325is to get this, I know that clp's are faster then my 325. What do u guys think?

When I had my '01 CL-S my wife was driving a '99 E46 328i 5MT. Stock for stock they were pretty close with the edge to the RWD 5MT BMW off the line.
I suspect a CL-P will lose, albeit not by too much.

Race him. I say you will win, i have a CL-P and i know that those things are pretty fast even if is not a type-S. All you have to do is to use your SS and hold your gears and you should be fine. Especially when you get to the 3rd gear you will be putting car lengths on him.
Go for it and let us know how it goes even though we all know you will win.
They only 3 series i fear on the road is the 330ci and even with that i wont fear anymore after i put on my comptech catback exhaust

I am about to race him tomorrow. I will let know guys know how it goes. Concerning the SS use, what would be the best speed/RPM to change gears? I know we are suppose to turn TCS off, any other advice?
Thanks guys for your input!

Not really, at most 1 - 2 for a total of about 4 HP, if even that. Nearly all o fthe gains to be had are in the headers.
Now, if you go forced induction, things change quickly.

I raced!. I won by almost a couple of yards agianst the bimmer ( 95mph) . I lost by almost 2 car lengths to the audi ( around 80 mph when we turned it off).
On my way home i ran into a pt cruiser...haha.. apparently he wanted a run. lost him from the start, he was 5+ lengths beine by the time i hit 60..
good stuff. I am happy

Not wanting to discredit but my initial points still holds. The reason I wonder is that the E46 328i 5MT would put down about 165 - 170 WHP which is about the same, if not more, as a CL-P. However, the E46 328i also weighs about 300 lbs less and has much shorter gearing. At the same time the BMW makes more torque to the ground.
So, same or more power, more torque, less weight and better gearing should equal the BMW having the edge. But then again, that is on paper and on the street things can change when drivers and the tune of the car is involved. Again
One thing though, in your title you put Should I race a ’99 328i. However, later in your first post you mention it being a 328is. There was no real designation for a 328is in ’99. The only 328i’s were the new (at the time) E46 models and did not has the ‘s’ designation. I am sure that was a slip from your previous ownership.

They only difference being that e36 with 'i' was 4 door instead of 2 on 'is'. Yep and as you said then they got rid of the 's' in e46. Still they put 190hp and 206 lbs @ 4000prm.

But once again, that is on paper and doesn't mean as much when you hit the pavement, A car could not be running well or another car could be running very well. And then there is the driver variable. But in the end you won and congrats.

The E36 3-Series manuals were often measured at about 13% loss so 190 * 0.87 = 165.3 WHP. That is very close. With shorter gearing and lighter weight, and being a an E36 it would have been even a little lighter, the 3-Series should win.
