20mph Punch Video

I thought I'd take a stab at doing a quick video of the speedo & tach to give folks something to comment on. It's my first attempt at doing something like this so don't flame me . . it took me several attempts to get something reasonable to look at.

Note: Temp was 82deg and 59% humidity, so not what we like for good runs, but it's that time of year. (yeah, dash showed 80, but I checked with Intellicast) I wasn't aiming for a speed, just thru 2nd since that's where I typically shut down on the street . . and it's getting too fast driving with a camera in one and doing the steering, and the other hand gate shifting. And I couldn't see the tach, so I was shifting off of sound and feel . . . okay, so comment away . . :tomato:

Nice.
Can we see a off the line tire roast 1st threw 2nd ?
Since you are (lead footed).
It would be great to see a video to represent the leadfooted name.

 . . well, if I were to nail it from a dead stop it will spin it through a fair part of 1st. However, I did a 20mph punch because there was no way I could do a standing start video by myself . . . I'd need to rig up some sort of hands free set up . . I did see a Vette with a slide-rail set up and he had a remote control so he could move the camera back and forth . . . I always wondered how they got those videos on YouTube.

Thanks . . . I want to find some other videos and see how the tach revs. One of the things I always strive for is a quick reving engine. I always thought that's where we can make up for loss of torque and HP.

Yup. The faster it revs, the easier it is to get into the sweet spot of the powerband.

Its a shame our (both the autos and 6MT) gearing sucks. Im in desperate need of a shorter FD.

You can say that again.

9 days and counting . . . until kids are out of school and I can start major work and mods on my car . . . will likely be down for a week or more depending on how everything goes.

- new axles
- new performance brakes & pads all around
- new struts all around
- timing belt
- plugs
- new exhaust from Cat back
- rear main seal (not 100% sure about DIY on this one)
- and who knows . . maybe 1 or 2 other things if I have the time & money

Nice vid, sounds like a healthy running engine

You gonna go with stock axles? What kinda struts you gonna go with? What size piping for the exhaust?

I'm actually going to be doing the same thing to my brakes soon. I'm piecing everything together now. Got the stainless steel lines and front slotted rotors. Gonna get rotors for the back, pads, and legend calipers and a fresh fluid flush/bleed.

civicdrivr 05-23-2010 09:23 PM

Sweet. Im tearing into my front end this week too for some maintenance. I also have to replace two of my motor mounts :ugh:

Thanks, it's the only thing running good right now. :tomato:

I'm sticking with stock axles as I don't think I'll be putting out enough power to damage them . . . and as long as I don't hit a big speed bump again . . . :tomato::whyme:

For the exhaust, I'm going with 2.5" starting with the flex pipe, CAT, Ultra Quiet Resonator, then 2.25" starting at the Y split going into Vibrant 1145 mufflers. All from Excelerate.

Struts I'm going to try the Illumina also from Excelerate.

On the brakes, for front & rear I'm going with SP Diamond slotted rotors and Hawk HPS pads

I'm soooo sick of the motor mounts :annoyed: . . . I just wish this new vendor would have had something for us . . especially since I'll have so much already tore down.

u got a pnp on the tb, manifold and runners?

Just port matched and cleaned things up with a medium finish . . my :2cents: is that polishing doesn't buy you anything . . unless you're boosted. The old school thinking is that you needed a bit of roughness to help with the air turbulence . . which supposedly helped with improving the air-fuel mixture.

There is a lot of information out there and much of it tends to contradict each other, but this link is more in line with my opinion . . and be sure and read section 5.

civicdrivr 05-25-2010 01:07 PM

^ Truth

You need a bit roughness for the atomization of the air/fuel mixture. Without it, the fuel could stick to the walls of the intake, and thats not good at all.

Im a fan of porting, not polishing.

CL-S progression 01 05-26-2010 06:27 AM

lol well after seeing ur car pull like that ruff..

you've inspired me to get my intake system ported... along with the heads.

I will get that next year when I get a valve adjustment.

but next up I am getting the XLR8 high flow cat. I think it should unleash some serious backpressure.

did the high flow cat show any gains on the butt dyno?

The OEM Cat was bad so I can't really say how much, but it did feel like it pulled better in 5000rpm+ range.

And when you get around to the porting, you need to address the entire intake system. So from the front of the airhorn to the opening of the intake need to be matched. What I did was bore out and match all the components to eliminate (minimize) any bottlenecks. I'll see if I can find a decent diagram of the intake system and note what I did with each section.

I did my whole intake as well.
From the TB opening to the inlet on the heads were all matched.
Got pictures, what do you need ?

 I've not seen a lot of folks do the entire intake . . . so, what is your take on the gains? Would you compare it fairly close to that of just headers?

I was just showing my oldest the video (mom's out of the house ) and I hadn't really broke down the video to see where the shift points were. A couple of things jumped out at me.

1) the shift from 1st to 2nd was - according to the tach - at 7,200rpm and 42
2) the shift from 2nd to 3rd was at 7,000rpm and 72mph . . and climbed to 77mph even after I let off the gas

3) my shifts couldn't have been any better . . . but what makes it even more interesting (to me) is that I couldn't see the tach . . because I had the camera in my left hand (and steering with the left hand) and the right hand on the shifter, so I was shifting entirely on sound and feel . . like the good old days. Maybe I should try this at the track and see what it does. :tomato:

On points 1 & 2 . . okay, redline is 6,900rpm . . so I'm assuming the tach must be off or somehow the rev-limiter was by-passed. However, I know (because I always gate shift) from hitting the rev-limiter that if the tach hits over 7,000rpm it will go off. Now if I can figure out what all took place it would be nice to see what this translates in to at the track.

Are you asking what RPM or what speed I'm at in each gear . . or in a specific gear?

Ruf!! How was your vacation?

And where are the damn mounts!!

Thanks for asking . . . it was great, especially the weather where we were at in the Denver/Boulder area. It gets fairly hot, but with the dry air and cool nights I wouldn't mind having a summer house there. It beats the Dallas area weather by a mile. We were there for a soccer tournament and then took the long way home to stop off at a few spots in New Mexico. Carlsbad Caverns was by far the best of the stops. Would recommend it.

Now I get to start working on cars again. I just got through putting new shocks/struts, brakes, wheels, major tune up and a few other odds and ends on the wifes 4Runner . . . at 157,000 miles it needed it. Sigh, and now I get to rebuild my son's 98 Prelude he wrecked 3 weeks ago :whyme:. It's was going to need new struts and brake pads, but now it needs bumper, hood, fender, control arm, rack&pinion steering, etc, etc. That puts my plans for major maintenance and upgrade to my TLS on hold.

Anyway, I have a reminder to call the motor mount manufacturer and see where things stand. Hopefully I'll get the Prelude done when the next set of test mounts show up.
