If the wife wasn't so anti-wagon, I'd maybe give an Outback a look. I wasn't aware the 3.6R was still an option, thought they were all I4 now.

Starting to casually see what's out there to replace the Flex. Would like to find a 2-row SUV that can seat 3 across with outboard carseats, that doesn't drink fuel at the 17MPG we're averaging in the Flex (lots of stop/go city driving & school-run idling).

Outback is more SUV than wagon. It rides pretty high and looks pretty tough, though I don't know if it's actually tough or not. It will for sure seat 3 across with car seats, there were a couple in the lot configured as such for demos.

I think 19 or 20 will be the last years for the 3.6R, after that it'll have the same motor as the Ascent.

Thanks Sam. I think it's aesthetically too wagon-like for her to even look at one. No idea which direction we'll go when we replace the Flex.

Pics tonight or tomorrow (whenever we have access to some fucking daylight) but it's a 2019 Subaru Outback 3.6L.

Sold it for a profit lol, I think I made $500 or something like that for owning it. I don't think we used the money from that sale for anything car related. My guess is that it went into the kitchen remodel fund or something like that.

The fun part is that we initially wanted an Ascent, Pilot, Highlander, etc that can tow a lot and have a ton of space on the inside. After doing more research, the Ascent is on its first model year so no thanks, the Pilot's higher trim levels come with the ZF9 so no thanks, the Highlander is more expensive and doesn't come with LED/HID so no thanks. What we got from doing the math is that we could buy a high end Outback to daily AND and old Yukon (or similar) to haul shit around for less money, insurance, and registration than any of the bigger crossovers. So...looks like I'm back in the market to get another Yukon Denali! It's the only vehicle I legitimately regret selling so I'm looking forward to getting another one. The others I miss but don't regret.

I gave away my TL... Enough said...

Picked up the car yesterday, it's really nice and well featured. I haven't driven it yet since it's the wife's car but so far so good. The ride is really nice and the tech is really nice to have. Also the headlights are out of this world good. I'll post some pictures this weekend when there's daylight...

Good to hear. Curious what your impressions are of the CVT.

I think if they could do a more 'Legacy' Outback, with less cladding & gray plastic, it would look great. I think only the top trim H6 gets the low profile roof rails & it's a nice improvement, aesthetically.

The CVT is just fine in the Subaru. The one in the CRV we tested was horrendous though. I think the bigger problem with CVT's is more the weak sauce engines that come with them more so than the transmission. The H6 has plenty of power and the CVT does great dealing with it.

The top trim "touring" gets the different roof rails. We didn't get that one but I don't mind the look.

So far so good! The Eyesight system has already paid for itself by mitigating a crash situation one day. Took one long road trip and it's quiet and comfortable though not as fuel efficient as we'd hoped though it's still breaking in and we knowingly got the less fuel efficient engine.

In terms of space, it has FAR more space than the Jeep both in terms of cargo and passenger space. Haven't really had a snow storm to test the AWD but I'm sure it'll be fine. I bought a set of snow tires but haven't found a good deal on a set of wheels for it yet.

Other than that, it works like a champ.

Oh and FWIW, I've asked my wife and a few others if they noticed anything different about the transmission (CVT) than any other cars and they've all said no. Should be a good testament as to why not many people care about CVT vs not. That said, the CVT isn't ideal but it's certainly not as bad as some of the others I've driven.

Noticed I never posted pics lol, I'll try and take some this weekend.

If anyone has any questions about the car, I'm happy to answer.

Curious, what pushed you to the OB over the Alltrack?

To be honest, we wanted something that could tow at least a little bit and have more interior space. I'm starting to do bigger woodwork projects that require the use of a trailer to bring stock home and the OB can tow 2700lbs. Couple that with the aluminum trailer we have and I can bring home a good amount of stuff. This is also why we got the 6 cylinder model, also because the 4 banger was slow AF. Also, the OB is quite a lot larger in terms of interior space and cargo capacity for any potential future family expansions that may or may not occur. The other reason being I already have a Golf.

Also I never took a picture but it looks basically like this:

Thanks, the OB is definitely a lot bigger, so that makes sense. Having a Golf already was part of my thinking in why you skipped the AT, commonality & all.

Is the 2.5 OB that bad?

At lower speeds it's pretty peppy, mostly because of the gearing, so it's fine around town but it's painfully slow on the highway. Passing and merging isn't very easy and you have to plan quite a lot ahead. It's definitely not the same as the Golf where you plant your foot and it immediately goes to warp speed lol. At the end of the day, it's a ~3700lb car with 175hp from the 4cyl so it's going to be slow. Upping that number to 256hp makes a noticeable difference.

Isn't that the point? None of the white/slick stuff on the ground when it's warm.
One of the girls at work used to live in MN, and said it's supposed to be a high of something like -24* today?

It can be 60F warmer than it is right now and we'd still have plenty of snow on the ground.

I don't know what happened to me because I used to love the cold...
but this year when it was 50 yesterday, I was actually annoyed that my hands were a little numb.
I'm getting old.
