Would you buy a '00 M5?

A surgeon friend has a Black 2000 M5 6-spd with some Dinan mods (not sure which). It is pretty well cared for and I think mileage is around 65k or so. He's on the list for the new M5 and is willing to give me a good price on his '00...I'm guessing $30k. I know the M5 is an amazing car, but how many of you would switch to a car even older than the one you currently own? Any known problems with the '00 M5's? Even if I only kept the car for 2 years it would still be 8 model years old. I just have a hard time trusting in a BMW with that many years under it. Opinions?

Hot car, but I think the 2000 model still had the old, 4:3 navigation CD system and I would be a little uncomfortable shelling out $30k for a car with no warranty. Just my $.02.

Still an awesome car!

It will hokd its value way better than the CL will. You're also getting a killer deal. IT would be worth about 10k more. PLus no worries about a tranny failing. There are no major problmes to my knowledge.

By the time you sell it in 2 years, you probably come out ahead 1k or at least break even. I would do it.

There is a history of electrical problems that BWM was plague with from 1999 to the 2003 models. Also a car out of warranty such as that will make a serious dent in your pocket book if anything was to go wrong mechanically. Its very expensive to fix euro car. Also check carpoint for previous reviews.

I'd get a 01 instead. That had some better features. Nothing wong with the car. I drove one for a while. It was great! Just remember it has 60k miles on it. How long you plan to keep it? You might find you need expensive repairs after 70k miles.

He's got a point. I probably would do it on resale value alone.

You might wanna have it looked over first though. Repairs are hella expensive.

after having driven an m5 I would get it...esp for that pice and as long as you can afford for repairs...also it's been my experience that bmw's seems to last longer and run better the harder you drive them...as long as you're not ridiculous with them

Family has two BMW 3 series. One a 1987 325 is w/ 170k miles and the other 1999 323is w/ 70k miles. NOthing major has gone wrong with either of them. THe old one runs like a top. The only problem it has given us is the a/c system acts weird some times but thats it. We also use it to auto-cross. BMWs hold up forever if you maintain them properly.

The M5 is a classic. Arguably the best everyday car ever made.

Maintenance is expensive so make sure you have some room in the budget for that (say $100 a month or so).

buy it, good deal...

Anyone who would have bought a used 5 or 7 series BMW for $30-32k instead of their CLS would have a car still worth $20k+.... (after 4 years...)

Obviously shop around for cars with lower miles before you drop the hammer...

if you compare the cost to maintain vs. the loss on a new car it's about equal. But one requires you to have a finanical status that allows you to pay for repairs.

Maybe, put no matter what way you look at it, the Car is atleast 5years ago, with no warranty. Old style. If i had a chioce between a 05TL/Navi 0 miles Vs your car, i'd take the TL, YEAH i know there very 2 different cars But there around the same price. Plus Insurance will be high.

But i will say it has not lost much in Value and thats a very good sign.

I'd buy it, drive it around for a while, then sell it at a profit.

That is if you can shell out $30K like that,

Not that great of a price......

Unless he is going to give it to you for around $28,000 then i don't know how great of a deal that is. Don't get me wrong i LOVE bmw's, especially the m's. The thing I would think about is that I went on cars.com and found a lot of m5's with ~10k less mileage with warranties from dealerships for a little over $30k just in my area. I think the price could be better but that's just my

Get it and get a extended warranty if you can. But i would still buy it, i want one so bad after being in it!! Hell I'd pick it over a m3 even. I got buddies with 5-series with over 100k miles, i wouldnt worry about maintance as much as people say. Unless the previous owner treated it like shit.

Frankly, I wish I knew that doctor so I could do this myself, but here's a kickface gameplan:

1) Get the M5 for $30k.
2) Sell it as soon as you can. You'll get AT FUCKING LEAST 45k for it(provided you're a half decent salesperson).
3) Congratulations. You just made 10k.
4) Send me a nice little gift/cash.
5) Put the rest down on a slightly used (<15k miles) new car... lets say an E500 or a 545i for ~50k? 40k left to pay off on that car now.
6) Strip the CL-S and sell parts/car separately, you'll get atleast 23k for the car + parts (I figured 17k for the car, 1k for the rims, 3k for the SC + headers, 2k for the other parts).
7) Of the cash you now have in hand, pay off ~20k on your new ride, save the rest.
8) End result: Shiny new kickass worry-free warranty-covered car in your driveway with only $20k loan to pay off on it. Your monthly payment on your E500 or equivalent car is: <$400 @ 6% for 5 Years.

If you need cash in hand to facilitate this entire process, get a line of credit against the equity in your house (HELOC). Good luck.

As a former owner of an M5 (and awaiting the 06!) and several BMW's I can tell you that the M5 is a world-class car and an amazing machine with only a few flaws, non of which really have anything to do with the way the car drivers.

Oh...and yes, maintenance is expensive as it is with all german vehicles and BMW's have pretty decent reliability...just not like, say, a Lexus or an Acura. Changing a clutch, brakes, and such is extremely expensive...but if you look, it is mostly labor (of course). If you do research and find someone other than the dealer (or do the work yourself...contrary to popular belief, it is not all that hard to work on a BMW) you can save tons of money.

My quibbles were with the dated look of the interior...granted I also owned a 2000 with the older style navigation system and such. The 02's are much better with the DVD based nav system.

My advice? Buy it, debadge it, and go looking for Corvettes to mess around with And keep it for 20 years...it will be worth a small fortune!

M5 is one of the best passanger , performance cars ever made by Germans . It handles better and faster than Porshe carrera 911 , corvette .You have to drive that car to get an Idea
Personally i would stick with the car like that for 8 years that CL for 2 . Classic , fast , simply the best .
Take it to the dealer pay 180 dlls , let him check everything for you . Then ask how much it will cost you to fix it . If you can make a disscount on that ...........GO FOR IT

Wanna be my financial planner? I probably will take the offer when the time comes. I'm not exactly sure how much longer he has to wait b/f getting his new M5. I suspect he was early to get on the list. As far as payments, I won't do 'em again. If I can't buy it outright then I can't afford it...

Anyone know of a good M5 forum. I'd like to see what kind of mods are available. A nice blown M5 would be cool.

I'm confused.....who would by a 2000 m5 with 62k miles on it for $45k when I can go down the street to a bentley dealership and choose from 5 different m5's with way less mileage for 34k with a warranty? Not tryin to rain on anyones parade but just wondering.

Um, if you can afford to make the payments you can afford the car (as long as your standard of living hasn't changed because of it). With that line of thought, you better not be taking out a mortgage for property....because if you're not paying cash for it then you can't afford it.

I understand the point you're trying to make but you're flawed in comparing the increasing value of a home and the depreciating value of a car. People use real estate as a vehicle for investing and retirement. Can you say the same for cars in 99% of situations? You will almost always lose money on the purchase of a car. You stand to lose much, much less if you aren't paying a bank to loan you the money. I have simply made a choice not to spend money on depreciating toys unless I can cough up the cash for it. I guarantee I get to retire a few years earlier as a result of this type of thinking. It isn't for everyone.

Just because you can make the payments does not mean you can afford something. If a high school student working at a low-paying job gets a credit card and buys a $5000 plasma tv can you really say he could afford it just because he can make the $150/mo minimum payment?

Who would pay 23k for an 01 CL-S w/o Navi and 60k miles? I've seen that happen too.

I personally based that 45k figure off of Autotrader in my area. M5s with 50k miles are going for >42k there. Good salesmanship is key.
