Not a bad compromise IMO.
Windshield GPS mounting legalized again in California

Though one may assume Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger would have, um, more pressing matters on his hands these days, the man has somehow found time to address a complaint put forth by a-many travelin' Californians. Just this week Mr. Schwarzenegger signed into law a bill that was put forth earlier this year that will legalize windshield GPS mounting once more. Granted, stipulations are present, but at least you won't be forced to point your retinas down at the cup holders in order to see your navigation system after January 1, 2009. In the new year, drivers in the Golden State will be able to suction their GPS unit in the "lower 7-inch corner farthest away from the driver or in the lower 5-inch corner closest to the driver." If you go pressing your luck and throw it smack dab in the middle, be prepared for for whatever fine you're due.

Wait...since when has GPS mounting been illegal?
I fucking do it all the time and so does everyone else. Never head of this before.

I first found out it was illegal back in May when we bought my father-in-law a navi and the garmin unit we bought him had information in the manual telling us it was illegal to mount it on the glass in california. Nice of them to let us know.

This isnt something I'm particularly worried about. Mine will stay where it usually goes.
I feel more uncomfortable and like im taking my eyes off the road if I put low and in the corners they tell us to...dumb.

I didn't know it was illegal either.... I've been telling all my customers to do it.
Not only is it easier to see on the windshield, but if you use the included adhesive suction pad on the dash, it can potentially be a magnet for thieves.

My fucking god. So some asshat thought it would be better to have that in the cup holder or on the seat and make driving safer? This is a no brainier and should have never been an illegal issue to begin with

only in california..they seem to come up with dumb law to prevent stupid people from harming others. Like text messaging. They should have banned this too if they decided to ban driving and talking on your cell phone. Only after the train wreck that they consider banning text messaging. What a bunch of dumbass legislators.

I shoot people
I knew it was illegal only because when you go to costco.com and look at their gps section, there's a disclaimer... but I've never heard of anybody ever getting a ticket for it (like you hear people getting tickets for window tints and no front plates), I akso have a cross hanging from my mirror... never had any issues with the cops on that either
