Why not to take your 70k BMW offroading

Cause it will snap like a twig. Got bored at the end of the day and snapped some pics of this crashed car.

Radiator hanging

Hydraulic lines to Active Roll Stabilization torn off

The front cross member

Sway bar end links, these are supposed to be straigh (other side is exactly the same)

Oil pan tiwsted like a pretzel

Can I run an engine with no oil? (oil filter torn open)

Exhaust support bracket bent to hell

Lightweight diff (sans a few fins)

Engine sits just a bit too high afterwards

Forced up so hard it actually craked the engine cover which is fairly thick plastic

I actually don't know the real story behind how this happened. Customer claims he hit an engine block in the road, but as you can see in the first pic, his bumper is still there. The car also cannot turn right now. The steering rack may be cracked. Its also unsure if he needs an engine at this point cause he may have broke the block at the motor mounts. I'm guessing this winds up being a 20k repair job.

No one at work can figure out what he hit. He also had to be going real fast to do damage from the front to the rear of the car. He also dented the spare tire wheel in the trunk pretty good as well as smashed the exhuast in at point in the rear.

Would jumping a parking block do that? If he kept going over it...

I bet he's saying he hit that engine block or whatever for an insurance claim...

Nah, wouldn't have enough force to do that sort of damage. The sub frame is aluminum, but its not exactly weak. Plus none of his wheels are bent, and besides his sway bar endlinks, his suspension looks to be in decent shape.

I remember when I worked for a BMW dealer I would see this shit. Actually it was from one customer. Her parents owned an Indian casino and she got about 30 grand a month for an allowance. Anyways she would always buy her boyfriends BMWs. They'd last about a month or two until they were pratically totalled.

Talk about rich and stupid.

The car is really dirty and it looks like its a little muddy which is why I suspect some sort of offroading adventure.

And I love how BMW owners are such compulsive liars. Another car came in yesterday. Customer states he hit a animal in the road, so I figure great, I'm gonna have to pick guts out of the engine. Get the car in the air and the plastic underneath the car is all broken, main accessory belt popped off and the radiator and AC condenser are bowed back pretty good in the middle. But it was puzzling cause there was no guts, and again the front bumper is undamaged. Look at the sway bar, and the sway bar end links are broken clean off the mounting point to the lower control arm. Customer bottomed out the car and for some reason felt the need to make up a story.

Did I ever mention that I love this job?

Plus it has a sport package (summer low profile tires, stiffened sport suspension)

Like I stated in the first post, I don't know if the owner went offroading or not though. The story they gave is utter BS though. The car was a little muddy though which got me wondering. However the car got this way the owner was doing something they shouldn't.

LOL. Reminds me of the time I hit a friggen bob-cat in the mother's Jag. Front bumper had a LIIIIIIIIIITTLE dent, the left wheel well covering was basically hanging off, and one day later, new bumper and plastic covering and good as new!

Jaguar - 1
Bobcat - 0

I don't understand why people make up stories w/ the service technicians. They all know the car better than anyone out there and will find out what happened sooner or later... plus if the customer just comes out bout what happened might make for an easier (not to mention more thourough) service job. But that's just me...

I have found that sometimes being honest with the service department can get you a whole lot easier experience.... and get some stuff that aren't covered by warrenty, covered.

Probably true but not all. Some people have this stereotype that BMW owners are all old, liars and stupidly rich .Obviously not your case I'm sure!

Umm.. what do you think of the Vishnu procede package ? Do you feel/think it's needed? the torque peaks at 390 lb-ft,versions are available now for about $1,300,Sixty mph arrives in 4.6 seconds and the quarter-mile flashes by in 13.0 seconds at 109 mph, 0.3 second quicker than the stock 335i?.

Is your advice going to be free or what? If not tell me where to mail the check

Wow, thread revival. So the guy stopped by and told the real story. Turns out he hit a cinder block on the highway going about 70. He must have pissed his pants when it happened.

I like it. There is some stuff that sucks, but at the end of the day I enjoy the work and the challenges.

I know not all are this way. Some are actually quite cool. In fact the guy who owned the car pictured was very cool when he came in to look at the car. He seemed to be telling the truth about everything and wasn't a jerk.

I think its a great deal and the performance seems incredible. The only thing I'd be worried about is the reliability. BMWs are very finicky and don't take to mods to well sometimes.
