Why no discount for manual from Honda/Acura

Sorry if this has been answered before but my search turned up way too many threads.

So I am contemplating whether to get a manual or automatic TSX. I can't drive manual but really want to learn (can't get out of 1st gear smoothly and quickly). Most other companies offer a discount for manual transmission ranging from $700 to $1200. That was one of the big reason why I wanted a manual car when I began my new car search. I have my eyes set on the TSX now but feel kind of jipped for not getting a discount for a manual. Also, I am scared that will lower my car's resale value since most people expect a manual to be cheaper. So why doesn't Honda/Acura offer a discount? Is it because they feel their manual tranmission is soooo nice, it doesn't warrant a discount?

In Canada, the auto trans is 1k more expensive than the 6MT.

You shouldn't be penalized for having to drive an automatic, so Acura does what I consider to be a noble thing in the car industry and allows a consumer who may never have had an oppourtunity to learn to drive stick to buy a car for the same price. Would you want to learn stick on your brand new 30k car?

People shouldn't have to pay extra to not have to shift, and people shouldn't expect to pay less because they are willing to shift their own gears

because they produce less manuals then automatics now...and the cost of production is roughly the same.

I drove a civic manual a few times and got the idea down but my real learning was on my 330. Only thing that got abuse was the clutch, thats cheaper to replace than buying a cheap car to learn on.

Plus this guy seems to know the concept, he just needs to learn how to do the 1st>2nd smoothly which most new guys have issues with anyways. Thats not a biggie.

I wouldn't be suprised if there was a high demand for the 6 speeds. They know the they will sell, why lower the price?

My gf spent an hour trying to teach me how to drive manual. I shift really smoothly once I get the car going. I started in a parking lot and went around the block a few times. I got owned by stop signs and red lights . To get out of 1st gear, I have to be very calm....press firmly on the clutch, rev to 900rpm or so, and slowly release the clutch until I feel the car moving. The process is hit or miss and time consuming...so not very good in real life traffic. I want to get to the point where I can quickly get out of 1st. I feel like such a loser having my gf teach me how to drive manual... .

My gf test drove an '05 Aspec MT TSX and she was very impressed with the clutch. She's only into European cars, but I may have converted her . She said the manual was really nice and will be much easier for me to learn than her old Cabrio.

On the C5, there was an 850-dollar price tag on the manual transmission on the MSRP. Manual transmission does not always equate to a cheaper price.

On the 4th generation F-body, however, it was the same price whether you get the auto or the manual. I personally think that's the fair way to go; leave it up to the owner at no penalty for his/her choice.

My brother got his new '05 TL 6-speed without knowing how to drive a stick. He learned on that car.

Actually, I had to re-learn how to drive a stick when I drove his car. From what I heard, a lot of people feel the same way, because of the clutch engagement on that car. It's weird.

my dad worked for Honda of America for 23 years and I asked him the same question. his reasoning is. they don't run a lot of "stick" Acuras (other than RSXs) through. When the "Stick" was offered in the 03 CL-S they only ran 60-120 motors WITH sticks for CLs PER WEEK. so i guess it's way of getting more money out of buyers.

see my post regarding production costs...costs money to switch a line over to accomodate sticks if they have a seperate line to build them.

does that car have a clutch remaining.
my sister TRIED to learn in a 1994 Mustang Cobra of my brother in laws. he about died when she went to shift didn't use the clutch and said "What's that pedal clear over to the left for." and you hear this hell of a grind.
I personally learned to drive "stick" in a old shitty Ford Escort.(it was at the most worth 1000 bucks) it was my buddy's old car(he just got a new car) he told me as long as you don't wreck it I'll help you learn to drive a stick shift.

So if I don't want to screw up a new car, where can I learn how to drive manual? My gf sold her Cabrio to carmax, and I don't want to learn on her Saab 9-5. As for friends, mine all drive automatics...her friends all drive manual but I don't think they will let me borrow their TL, or new 330i, or Evo, or S4. Can I rent a manual for a day or two?? hehe....

Dude, try to do a search in the TSX forum on this. There have been a few threads about this topic in the last 4 or 5 months.

go rent a stick. but don't rent anything "racey" like a GTO or anything real high performance. something basic like a Focus or Civic.

You can't rent a stick anymore.

Just buy the damn car in stick and learn on it. Unless you are absolutely terrible you AND your car will be fine.

People are making big a deal over nothing.

Werd.

Hell even if you drive a rental perfectly it doesnt mean you will drive the TSX perfectly.

I drove a civic just fine but had issues with the 330. I just had to learn the way the 330's clutch was which took awhile.

Get the manual TSX and enjoy. You will love the car after a few weeks of getting use to it.

FYI, manual cars are not as easy to sell than an automatic in the used car resale market...

Only to a select few that know about the car.
Also trade in & resale gives you less $$ for a manual then the auto even if you paid the same. Reasin being a manual is harder to sell.
When I was shoping my old 6mt around at dealer to sell or trade every appraisal I got was $5-700 less then the auto was. It said "-$500 - manual transmission."
