Where to go from here...
I have a 2012 TL FWD, car has been good to me with few issues since I bought it in 2012. I don't drive it much so it only has 43k miles on it. I find myself getting a bit bored with the car but have no idea what to even trade it in for. I'd prefer my next car to be a non-luxury brand, I don't care much for the attention anymore and non-lux brands seem to have just about all the good options anyway. My problem is I want something exciting to drive that isn't an SUV or CUV, I have 1 toddler and 1 baby on the way. I was thinking of getting a Golf R because we already have an SUV and this will be a second car, but I'm thinking the Golf doesn't have the room I need to even make short road trips with 2 kids. (wish they have the Golf R estate here).
Any suggestions I'm not thinking of?

LoL. I had to rent one of those when my TL was in the shop. They're really not half bad cars but wow, even my kids had a hard time fitting in the back seat. There's nothing like not having what you had to make you appreciate it when you get it back.
I'm in the same predicament. 2012 FWD TL and have no idea what I'll be replacing it with. I plan on hanging onto it for a few more years, probably 3-4 minimum, so I'm not rushed for time. But I have very little interest in the TLX. I'd start by test driving a newer Accord or Camry. VW's are pretty competitively priced right now as well, and from what I hear, they've improved their long-term reliability considerably. If the Golf is too small, maybe the Passat?

Get a Hyundai or Kia, they are making some great cars these days. Nissan isn't bad (as long as it doesn't have a CVT) and neither is Honda. Toyota is trying to be UBER sporty with the type-r Camry. I'll move this to car-talk so you get some varied advice!

Golf R is a good choice. My friend with a kid just picked it up. Think he got his 1 year old. It has enough room for a car seat in the back. He got it for like $28 or 29k.

You might find the urban assault strollers don’t fit in the back of the R, but two car seats should fit fine.
You're going to have a tough time finding something fun to drive that fits two kids and the associated stuff to move them around that isn’t crazy expensive.
The only car I can think of that does all that is an Audi S5 Sportback and they are $60K.

Keep the TL and get a [insert sports car here depending on budget, ie. Miata or Corvette] so you can cut loose from time to time
You will get bored of any car you drive all the time. My friend is trading in his Ferrari 458 for a 488...

Another solution if you don't want to go the two car route would be to look at the Kia Stinger GT. Hot looking car, with strong performance creds, and the space for a family.
I am very interested in that car as a family hauler. But I never buy new so I'll have to wait a few years to find one off-lease or something.
I still stand by my belief that you will get accustomed to whatever you drive daily so to really keep things fresh, you should just go for a wildly impractical sports car.

Good call. I was super close to picking up an S2K last year but the finances didn't line up at the time. This years looking up so maybe I'll pull the trigger. The only kicker about another car is twice the insurance.

Must be used then...and 2012 to 2013 in terms of age. I've been shopping around and they are a hot commodity right now, no one is offering deals.

This is a great suggestion by the way. You can get a decent NB Miatas for under $4k.

That's a hell of a good deal then...CA area I'm guessing?
I was just offered a 2015 with 22k for $34k. I'd just get a new one though, lots of new awesome features and the new 6/72k warranty makes it a worthwhile expense.

How about a Scatpack Charger? Enough room for kids and plenty of power for pretty cheap.

Yeah, it was a good deal. LA area. Think he got an extended warranty thrown in too. The deals got tamed after CTR was released. And the FoRS pricing has crashed, so that forced VW to mellow.

You're decently tall, but I'm more referring to being tall ... horizontally.

Wow thanks for all the feedback guys. I actually don't mind how the new Chargers look but they don't really give out the vibe I'm going for.
The new Accord is definitely a contender especially with all the positive reviews I've been reading, but the idea of driving an Accord is almost too bland for me, I want to blend in but not sure I want to blend in THAT much.
I've thought about getting a fun weekend type car but I have a two car garage and would really like to avoid booting a car out to make room for it.
I think I might be sold on the Golf R, I might just wait to see a 2018 model pop up for sale since they added a few cool new features like the digital gauges pulled from Audi, and the new 7spd DSG, which sounds like it will more suitable for highway trips. I like that the Golf will just look like a Golf to 90% of people but the car junkies will know different.

Advanced congrats on the Golf R.
Someone who is set on the Golf R, would hardly cross shop the 2.0T6MT Accord.
Enjoy the new car

I think I'm also nearly sold on the 2018 Golf R as well. I was nearly dead set on a Focus RS until I drove the Golf. The Focus is a LOT faster and far more of a performance car but it's not nearly as comfortable or well built as the Golf and, for a daily, those are two very important things to me. Having the S2000, which is in race car mode all the time regardless of what you want, it's nice having something that can turn off the race car when you just want a car.
I'd definitely cross shop the Accord if Honda didn't pull the same crap that they always do and take out all the features that people want in exchange for the manual. The sport comes sans sunroof, leather, heated seats, etc... Make me a 2.0T 6MT Touring and I'll send my deposit in right away.

I thought the new Accord 2.0T 6MT comes with a moonroof?

^ Maybe that's with the 2.0T which hasn't been released yet. The 1.5T is definitely a stripper.
#27
I imagine, IF a Golf R shopper is actually cross shopping an Accord, they will want the 2.0T6MT, and not the 1.5T
#28
Ex-OEM King
You would be correct sir...but we don't at this point know what the load out is on the 2.0T and won't until next month. I was under the impression that it was the same car except for the engine. Not a huge deal for me to wait but just throwing it out there.

If you click the link I pasted above you will see that the 2.0T6MT essentially starts life as an EX
while the 1.5T MT is essentially an LX
while the 1.5T MT is essentially an LX

What really surprised me about the new Accord was just how much faster the 10spd automatic was to 60mph than the 6spd MT, it was like a half second quicker or something like that.

no matter with how much practices you had in "shafting", you will never shift as fast as today's auto,
But no matter how fast today's auto shifts, you will never get the same type of enjoyment from driving a stick.

I agree shifting is a blast when you're not stuck in traffic but some of those DSG transmissions out there with paddle shifters are a blast to drive as well. The Golf R gets a cool launch control when you get the DSG equipped model good for a 4.5-4.6sec 0-60! The MT Golf R is something like 5.2-5.3sec.

I have the same issue, and same sentiments. I have an 09 TL with 130k... I'm going to drive it another year but looking for its replacement. 6MT 4 door sedan, can fit 2 car seats in back, and be something i'd want to own for 5+ years.
Top of my list right now is a low mile 2015 Audi S4. I want that 3.0 supercharged engine. Seems fairly reliable as euros go. May be too small for me, haven't sat in a sedan, friend had an A4 cabriolet he bought off his parents, then sold after he had kids.
Figure next year there will be alot of them coming off lease. Right now the 14's are fairly plentiful on auto trader in my area.
