Whats up with the Acura stated power?

I went on the Acura page today and all the cars crank hp ratings dropped. the 260hp MDX is now 253, The TL instead of 270 is not 253, the RSX is 201 instead of 210, RL is 290 instead of 300 and TSX is 205 instead of 215.....what the crap? Did the cars power actually drop or do they still make the same power to the wheels?!

by SAE J2723.

They revised the way they rate the engines. They're the same engines, they just measure them differently.

What he said, and the TSX was never 215. It was 200.

The '04 and '05 were rated at 200. The '06 models got a little power bump from improved breathing and would make around 210hp if it were rated with the old SAE system.

The funniest thing was that some idiot Infiniti salesman tried to tell me that Acura dropped the power on its cars because the FWD couldnt handle it!?!

So, I told him that he doesnt know what hes talking about and then he told me, "Then why did the power drop?" (With a bit of smirk)
and I replied, " Because Honda has moved to the new SAE standard of rating hp, which Nissan hasnt done yet cause then a lot of their cars would no longer make 300+hp!" (I said this very loudly so everyone in the showroom could hear)

Additional air passages in crankcase for reduced pumping losses

Revised pistons with more valve-piston clearance
04 TSX and 06 TSX comparison

This compares a stock 06 MT TSX with a stock 04 MT TSX. Both cars had less than 1000 miles at the time of the dyno. As you can see differences are mainly at the top end on the high cam. On the high cam, the 06 generates about 15HP more
Have you seen the baseline comparison for the 2004 to the 2006 done by Hondata? Looks better than just a couple horses at peak.

I forgot about that. It looks like Acura is being very conservative with the 205hp rating.

Not sure that's a wise move on Honda's part when competitors like Toyota and Nissan are starting to up the ante on hp.

Better to under-promise and over-deliver than to have to deal with the backlash of over-promising and under-delivering...:cough:mazda:cough:

Nothing like telling a salesman he's an ignorant tool in front of all his customers. Nicely done.

Model Year 2000 Miata

I was selling for Honda when that happened. That was funny shit. They were giving away buy backs on the cars, refunds of a couple grand if they wanted to keep the car, and huge, free warranties. Typical Ford management.

So, without looking it up, what are the actual HPs for the CL-S and TL-S...? Are they 260 or are they over-stated...?

Hard to say. It's not a matter of overstating so much as the standard was adjusted to account for a slightly varied set of factors. If I had to guess, I would say that 260 hp translates into about 253 hp under the new SAE standard.

It's still crank hp. Google SAE J2723 if you want to learn how it's measured.

Or...just state the real hp, and deliver on that. Seems to be working fine for everybody else.

I wasn't laughing at you, just what the salesman told you.

I was told that the Accord coupe was AWD by a salesman when it first came out.

Not true. A lot of companies intentionally underrate their hp for a variety of reasons. The Neon SRT-4 is a good example. Since there are so many factors invovled in the hp that a particular engine makes, some companies are simply playing it safe by offering a slightly lower number.

They test several cars and I bet they pick the lowest one.

What was worse was the RX-8 debacle.
