What would you rent . . .

for two weeks in Wyoming beginning 10-2-08?
Volvo XC90
Volvo S80
Going to put 1,000+ miles on it and think the S80 would be the better choice?

Fly to SLC, drive 375 miles to Yellowstone Nat'l Park for 10 days. Two people with luggage, space is not a concern.

I'd say S80, but why not an S40 convertible?

S80, which I've rented for a few days before- pretty comfy cruiser.

I cannot imagine renting the XC90 instead where interior seating is not a concern-- the XC90 is a bulkier, heavier vehicle with the same engine based on the S80 chassis.

I think you'd have a better chance at finding a rental company that has XC90s than S80s though ...

I don't think a convertible in Wyoming in October is going to be used very much. I could be wrong.

I got quoted $270 for TWO days in an '08 CTS about two weeks ago. I can't imagine what two weeks in a S80 would cost =o

Hertz rents S80s and XC90s. I just got back from a week in an S80. The engine is nothing to shake a stick at-I can't imagine how slow the XC would be if it has the same engine.

Other than that, the S80 was a fine car to drive for a week and got 22 mpg.

FYI-my week for an S80 was right at $400 for the week with the fuel option.

Hertz. That mileage was based off of me screaming up the hills of Maine trying to pass all of the slow people-so I was presently surprised.

If space isn't a concern and the rates are cheaper then the S80. You don't need a fast car for vacation unless that's your intention. Get something roomy and comfortable so more than likely the XC90. It matters what you want more for two weeks than the other. You can always do the availability trick. Ask for a type of car that you know they might not have, like a coupe or convertible. Then act dissatisfied with the service and they'll upgrade you.

for a road trip i'd pick the xc90 for room, love the space of an suv, hate the mpg....

i'd get an suv for a DD if it wasn't for the gas prices =\

Once you figure out the space situation, go with the best mileage vehicle.

Don't care about mileage or cost per gallon, (2) company gas cards for the last 18 years!

I think it will be the S80, unless the 15 day forecast shows heavy snow expected.

I assume Hertz only has the 6 and not the turbo 6.

whynot a nice convertible.
i actually rented a pontiac solstice. def. not a car i would purchase with my own money. but it was pretty cool car to drive for one trip.
althou only 13 miles ran and the car was pretty much brand new, its quality and ergonomics inside was terrible. still a good experience. solstice wasn't so expensive via Herts.

I think it can snow there in October in higher elevations--might want to get the XC90.

Unless it's unusual weather it looks like FWD S80 should be OK. Drove a RWD Olds Cutless Diesel (weird car) from Grand Canyon South Rim to Bryce Canyon in a hell of a snow storm in the 80's with no problems.
for the Olds Diesel too.

The hi-po engine option for the S80 is now a Ford V-8 (like the XC), with the T6 being the intermediate option.

You can check the other car rental agencies for their "premium car" choices or to see if they have a T6 S80 if you are so inclined, but you're probably right in that the rental companies will likely carry the base engine versions only.

+1 for S80 unless space is an issue.
