the 540i was my dream car for many years. It would be really hard for me to turn that down, but I think I would take reliability as my #1 priority, especially when buying used out of warranty.

I use to not mind it but over the last year it's become more and more annoying.

really? my neighbor has an 02 bought it new still has it with no problems he has the 745li.

Don't get the E-Class or BMW.
VANOS is a very expensive repair.
IS300 is your best bet for reliability. Though there are other options in the $20-25k range like a 2005 G35, 2004 RL, 2004 S60R, 2004 GS300, 2004 Jaguar XJ8 (I can't believe it but it's true ... $23,998 w/35k miles) ...

test drove the 540i didnt like it all that much yes very powerful pretty fun to drive. The car sucks gas like no other.
Looks like i'll be looking for a 530i white one,white is300 and charliemike i didn't even think about the RL i love everything about the o4.
