We have a 5 speed Odyssey in the shop

It came in slipping really badly and we're just about to open it up. This is a 2003 Ody with a BYBA transmission. The tranny is very similar to the 2000+ TL tranny. It's huge compared to the older 4 speed tranny.

I'm very interested to see the setup inside. We're opening it now...

Car Talk?

fla-tls 09-06-2006 03:44 PM

Here are the codes pulled from the computer:

P0730 Incorrect gear ratio
P1750 Mechanical fault in hydraulic system

Drivability symptoms:

Flaring on 1-2 shift
Slipping in all gears
Delay on 3-4 shift
No lockup
No kickdown
No downshift when coming to a stop

It was low 3 quarts of fluid (that is A LOT) - filling it made no difference.

It showed no signs of leakage - but we're checking into that further. Hell - where'd the 3 quarts go?!?

Moog-Type-S 09-06-2006 04:12 PM

A bad Honda tranny?!?!?!? I'm surprised.

Some of those symptoms were similar to my first tranny failure in my old CL.

Crazy Bimmer 09-06-2006 04:35 PM

How many miles on it?

iTimmy 09-06-2006 06:40 PM

My friends 04 odyssey is on its 3rd transmission, I think its a common problem

mr.motoring 09-06-2006 06:41 PM

I'm curious, what does 'flaring' mean?

fla-tls 09-07-2006 08:20 AM

115k on the ODO

Flaring means that the car temporarily falls out of gear while shifting - so on this tranny the 1-2 shift feels a little like 1->N->2.

The third gear clutch pack is wiped out. I'll have more once the inspection is completed.

Just like all the other Hondas/Acuras with blown trannys.

SiGGy 09-07-2006 11:33 AM

Did you guys warranty it?

It would be a crime if you didn't...

SSMTL01 09-07-2006 11:43 AM

is flaring associated with the engine seeming to rev up before the tranny completes the shift?

jsong83 09-07-2006 12:21 PM

my parents 01 odyssey is in the shop right now. already had to get the transmission repaired 4 times and this time, it just stopped working. if you put it into drive or reverse and step on the gas, it doesnt move.

the car is the biggest POS.

Ken1997TL 09-07-2006 01:11 PM

Hydraulic failure? I thought Honda automatics used stator force instead of hydraulics.

fsttyms1 09-07-2006 01:19 PM

Bet the 3rd gear clutch packs and drum look just like the 2 i have laying at home from my trannies Take some pics. Did the spring start spinning in the bottom of the drum maring it up too??

fla-tls 09-08-2006 11:20 AM

Stator force? The stator is part of the pump. All automatics and CVTs use hydraulics.

It turns out that this units primary problem was being low 3 quarts of fluid. I don't know how it got that way - but it was - and all five clutch packs were burnt up. It turns out 3rd was no worse than the other 4. There were no overheat conditions on any other part of the tranny (i.e. 2nd gear).

It needed a master build kit (all clutches and steels) and 5 solenoids (from dealer $$$). It's being built now.

Did we warranty it? No - I'm not Honda ;) The dealer had quoted hom 4-5k - they weren't going to warranty it either. He's leaving here with a bill for 2.8k.

Sorry - didn't think to take pics and it's just about back together now.

Anyone with a TL 5 speed comes it, I'm definitely taking pics!

Revving momentarily like it's in neutral.

mr.motoring 09-08-2006 11:28 AM

When my tranny went, I had to skip 3rd sometimes because the engine revved without the tranny engaging.

And when I got my car back, the new tranny decided to quietly slip out of 1st often when the car was stopped and idling. I would proceed to go and got nothing but revs. So I had to send it back in again.

fla-tls 09-08-2006 12:18 PM

I take it back. My builder had cleaned the parts and loaded the clutch packs, but had not begun assembling the tranny. I took pics and will post them tonight. You'll see what I'm talking about with the 3rd gear clutch pack. It's not in the same location as the other 4... way out on the end of it's shaft

The original Hondamatic didnt use hydraulics, apparently they do now though

Costco 09-10-2006 02:13 AM

This is a common problem because the 5AT in the Odyssey/CL/TL were similar. Plus it was Honda's first ever 5AT, I think.

F900 09-10-2006 04:34 AM

:what:

YeuEmMaiMai 09-10-2006 12:16 PM

I will never get a trans rebuilt for a honda again. I had a 98 accord where they could not rebuild it properly and refused to admit a problem. less than 5 K mile later they rebuilt it again stating that they put the wrong parts in. less than 5 K later it was having problems again. rebuild again... less than 2 K later again trans dead.

SodaLuvr 09-10-2006 01:27 PM

Did the kit contain updated friction materials, or should I say, what updates were avaliable?

Did you re-use the external oil jet or was the integrated oil jet used?

fla-tls 09-11-2006 08:40 AM

OK - here are some pics. I just got the reassembly pics. He had already done the inspection and cleaning.
