Wagons - current options?

I've been playing with the idea of changing up my daily driver from an SUV (2011 VW Tiguan) to a sport wagon. Nothing really wrong with the Tiguan, I would just prefer to have a car that is more fun to drive yet maintains the utility I have grown accustomed to.

I prefer having my car under warranty, so leasing is my preferred option. Also, it must be:

- AWD
- sporty
- luxurious

As a large number of Americans seemingly dislike wagons, options are pretty limited. So far, the only current options I can think of for lease are the F31 BMW 328i xDrive sport wagon and the B8 Audi all-road. Any others I'm missing?

Forgot the new E63 AMG comes in a wagon variant, thanks. However, for personal reasons I will not purchase any Mercedes products...no matter how incredible they might be. Besides, I doubt I'll ever be able to afford the lease on a E63 wagon anyway.

I had thought about the CTS-V wagon, but I don't think it comes with AWD?

I don't think the XC70 is sporty enough for me, but good call on the V60R. I will add that to the list.

mrmako 09-15-2014 02:15 PM

For the "sport" quotient with Volvo, the T6 AWD would be the way to go in a V60. Or if you can get lucky, try to find a Polestar V60..... Factory bump in HP and sportiness.

The XC rides a bit high, not sporty.

NBP04TL4ME 09-15-2014 02:22 PM

You may be right about the CTS-V wagon. It may only be RWD. Pretty sure the CTS Wagon is available in both RWD and AWD, but may not have the sportiness you are looking for.

Other than that, I belive all that is left is Subies and the VW Jetta...... but these don't meet you criteria.

Forgot about the Outback.
Doesn't hit the Luxury requirement, but the new redesign does look quite nice.

But, that CVT :ugh:
Definitely misses the point on sporty, I imagine.

Too bad this isn't sold here: No AWD & not necessarily luxury, but looks fantastic IMO.

justnspace 09-15-2014 03:21 PM

fuck your beliefs!

get the E63 in wagon form!

SamDoe1 09-15-2014 03:30 PM

BMW 328d X Drive. Decent performance and excellent gas mileage.

dat torque doe...

Sidebar: I saw the new 5 series touring (wagon) when I was in Europe a few weeks ago and it's damn sexy. Pity they don't sell it here, I probably would have bought one over the TL.

ThermonMermon 09-15-2014 05:39 PM

-Allroad (good cargo, but little to no rear sear capacity)
-V60 (should check all the boxes)
-CTS (wagon is getting discontinued, so you will have a pretty dated car once the new model sedans flood the market)
-BMW 328x (good rear seat, but limited cargo)
-Leftover TSX wagon

...and that's pretty much it as far as luxury goes, sans MB...

mattg 09-15-2014 06:07 PM

If I had the dough I would get the Allroad.

charliemike 09-15-2014 06:27 PM

The Volvo V60 T6 R-Design is a good option. But if I was spending that much I'd try to find a V60 Polestar.

That said, the 328i/d are nice looking wagons.

oonowindoo 09-15-2014 06:35 PM

328d! i heard with a $500 tune, they will have over 400 lbs of torque.

Chief F1 Fan 09-16-2014 06:33 AM

really want a 530d xDrive Touring-BAAAAAD

CLtotheTL32 09-16-2014 06:45 AM

Allroad

I would love a E63 Estate but they are insanely pricey.

Indeed, it is slow. However, those motors have a lot of aftermarket potential. APR makes a ton of stuff to bump up the power.

RPhilMan1 09-16-2014 09:13 AM

Allroad for sure.

Chief F1 Fan 09-16-2014 09:39 AM

i thought I saw somewhere the A6 Avant is making a comeback? Could be Euro-only, not sure.

EDIT: yup, here it is http://www.roadandtrack.com/car-revi.../audi-a6-avant

Pretty sure they mean "the second half of 2015" not "2005."

well, what I didn't get was the mention of tdi engines that are the current versions? so confused . . .

Chief F1 Fan 09-16-2014 11:12 AM

but I am pretty sure you are correct charliemike

DAYTA 09-16-2014 11:23 AM

As much as I love Audis and the Allroad, my main concern is that my Tiguan not only has the exact same 2.0T engine, it has also been APR flashed for the past 30k miles so I've grown accustomed to the amount of power it has.

I'm not definitely moving on from the Tiguan, but if I do I'm currently leaning towards the BMW 328i xDrive. Dyno results show the N20 engine is underrated with 230hp/255tq at the wheels stock (same as the EA888 + Stg 1 APR flash) so I won't be wanting for power. It also has noticeably more rear leg room than the Allroad, something the Tiguan surprisingly has in spades.

For the record, I checked the Volvo V60 stats and it looks like it's down about 2" of rear leg room compared to the BMW which is a ton. I will still take a look at it, but I have my doubts.

I researched modified F31 328is in M-Sport trim, and with just a small drop (Dinan or H&R springs) and a nice set of wheels...they look amazing IMO

You should expect astronomical prices from BMW now though. Case-in-point:

2015 BMW M3 Base Sedan Charlotte NC | WBS3C9C52FJ276207

Its gorgeous, but $90k for a 3 series!! :what::thud:

 The link may not have pasted properly. The MSRP is $89,950 as it was optioned.

-Base car : $62k
-$500 for paint
-$2500 for leather
-$1900 for lighting
-$4300 for exec pack
-$1900 for driver assistance plus
-$2900 for DCT
-$8150 for carbon/ceramic brakes
-$1000 for adaptive suspension
-$1200 for wheels
-And a few other smaller items

It's a shitty example, but I was still awestruck when I saw the price. Gorgeous car though.

$89,950. We saw it in person last weekend

I hate how BMW nickel and dimes you for basic options. "Oh you want your leather seats that you just opted to pay $1450 for to be heated too? That'll be another $500." :bored:

Just built a 328 Touring; $57,275 :what:

Edit: It doesn't come with an effing anti-theft alarm?!? Put me down for another $400 then.

Our 5 year old A4 Avant is still running strong and looks pretty classy.

Yeah, I think that's the biggest drawback about the BMW - they are so damned expensive. The 328i xDrive wagon I spec'd out on the website was $55k - hell no.

However, I checked up on a BMW dealership and they actually lease exceptionally well because the residuals on a 36-month lease are 62% - that's 8-10% higher than most cars I've inquired about in the past and makes a huge difference in the monthly payments.

For example, I found a demo 2014 328i xDrive fairly well optioned (Sport Line, Cold Weather, Tech, Luxury) with 9k miles that the dealership is willing to lease since it would still be under warranty after 3yr/36k miles. The sale price would be $43k, but since the residuals are 62% my monthly payment would be $485 (taxes included) with $1,500 down. IMO, that's actually pretty good and something I'm strongly considering.

 :pimp: Nothing better than an Audi wagon. OP, why not just spring for an Allroad, get the body-color wheel arches, and then do form aftermarket wheels? Done.

Regular CTS wagon is AWD and RWD, V wagon is RWD only.....much to my chagrin....as I can't launch my car for crap, it just spins.

I don't recommend the non-V CTS wagon as while it's a pretty darned good wagon, a) they don't make them anymore so you'd have to go used and b) not that sporty without the biggest engine.

I'd rather have the ability to customize my own car based on my needs, instead of a lump sum package that comes with bunch of shit that i have to pay for that i dont need.

I wish BMW could get rid of all of their packages and let me choose each option 1 by 1.

also try to build a 335 touring and i bet you the price difference is not much higher than $57k if you built them the same way.
That is the thing about BMW, the lower trim BMW 320 and 328 are only "Cheap" if you don't put a lot of options on them since their standard features are very limited.
If you want a highly optioned lower trim BMW, you might as well go 1 level up and the price is about the same because of the standard features on the higher trim.

I was just on BMW website.... WTF happened to 335 Wagon????

CLtotheTL32 09-16-2014 06:42 PM

They've never offered the 335 Touring here.

Uhh...there's never been a 335 wagon in the U.S. I'm just mad they stopped bringing the 328 RWD wagon here.
