I went shopping for a wagon last December. I was cross-shopping between a Mazda 6 Sport (I think all wagons come with V6 standard btw) and a Subie Legacy GT. Both with manual transmission.
I like the styling of the 6 better, and it's bigger inside. However, it lacks serious oomph, and it's interior material quality is not up to par.
The Legacy GT, on the other hand, is a blast to drive. The cloth seats look and feel much better than those in the 6.

Side note: Starting 06 Subaru no longer offers manual tranny on GT waqons. If you want to roll your gears you will have to get a non-turbo version (which is dog slow), or an Outback XT. They are also not offering the GT trim; you have to go GT-Limited with sunroof and leather if you want turbo. Stupid move I think...
