VW Questions.. (2009 GTI 6MT)

My friend bought his 2009 VW GTI 6MT new and put on almost 45k miles. He's been having great time with the car for the past 3 years, but now he has CEL and Airbag light on the car. His warranty just ended couple months ago, and he was quoted $3,500 from the stealership to fix the problems. And they won't tell my friend what the problems are.

We've been to two different local bodyshops to get quote, but nobody could find out what the problems are.

Any recommendation?

I feel extremely bad for him because he asked me about the VW reliability when he was car shopping, and I told him the reliability issue has been improved by a lot recently.

it doesnt help if you dont list the symptoms he's having.

if the CEL is on, go to an autoparts store and have them read the code for free.
then list the code here.

I'll tell him to go to autoparts store to read the code.

But the funny thing is there's no apparent symptoms with the car.

he was quoted 3500$ to fix the problem but they won't tell him what the problem is? hahahaha That sounds retarded. Who in their right mind would pay that no questions asked? Get the codes read and post them here. Or tell him to find someone with a vag com locally, I am sure there is someone around you. VW scene is huge in socal by looking at vwvortex. They could read the codes, clear them if necessary, and tell him in better detail what's wrong with the car.

Yup, VAG COM will tell him the codes.

Regardless of what happens, he should never go to that dealership again.

I know! He did all his service at that specific dealer too! They were being so retarded to my friend after the warranty was gone. They told my friend that there's something wrong in the engine and the airbag is not going to work in the accidents. I asked my friend to ask them exactly what codes they are getting from CEL, and they said they can't disclose that.

And I didn't know about this till not long ago, but I guess he had one of his tires fixed at that dealership a year ago, and he was charged like 100 bucks or something. He said he had a flat tire and they fixed it in less than 30 minutes! 20 minutes waiting + 10 minutes of actual work time..

He's not a car guy so not on any of the forum.

Anyone here on vwvortex? It'll be great if someone can find a person with vag com in Los Angeles area. Tell him/her we can pay him/her for helping my friend out..

Sound like a gullible owner and an opportunistic dealer.

Tell the dealer to go pound sand, and go to another dealer.
Tell your friend to get a spine and ask for an explanation, and never just say "ok" to "pay us the fee and we will fix the problem"...without getting a full explanation of the issue.

I believe there is a TSB for this.

Clear it with a VAG Com.....however if none can be had there is the "ghetto" way that might work:

Disconnect the battery and touch the positive and negative leads together, not the battery terminals, the cables.....known as a capacitive discharge.

...and do all the steering wheel controls work?

If his steering wheel controls do not work, than more than likely it's a failed clock-spring...and that will need to be replaced.

He's going to the local autopart shop right now. Should be texting me the codes pretty soon.

And, yes, his steering wheel controls are working properly!

On the surface it would appear to just be a fault code that can be reset.

Hope it's nothing serious, and we can just erase the code.

What about the airbag light though? Can the autoparts store's reader find what's wrong with that issue?

"If" the autoparts store is able to read the full codes, it will be shown the "issue"

Something like the following VAGCOM read out:

VAG-COM Version: Release 409.1-US

Control Module Part Number: 8D0 959 655 G

Component and/or Version: Airbag Front+Kopf 0002

Software Coding: 00304

Work Shop Code: WSC 06325

1 Fault Found:

01217 - Side Airbag Igniter: Driver Side (N199)

32-00 - Resistance too High
Then he can perform a reset and/or fix the issue.

Simple thing is to turn off the airbag light with VAGCOM.....then see if it comes back on again.

If it does come back on again, you have more than just an "error".

Somewhat OT, but I heard an Autozone commercial on the radio yesterday and it said they do free code readings, but excluding California. Whats up with that?..

Probably because of the religious zealots that run CARB.

Holy fuck $3500 for a sensor.

That's not ripping someone off, that's criminal.

So is it something that I can maybe fix for him?

Or should he find another dealer or autoshop? How much would this thing go for?

So, I guess this DIY is for 2.0T FSI in A4, how different is GTI's engine bay from A4 in terms of layout?? If it was my car, I would just take out whatever to see if I can fix it, but it's my friend's car. So.. don't want to fk it up in any way.

And I guess he need a new intake flap motor (IFM), correct?

Some posts in there suggest, the dealers will charge about $800 for this. Is it still overpriced at $800? What do you guys think?

Doesn't your friend have a TSI engine? 2009?

If so, I "think" (not sure) he made need an entire new intake manifold.

Quoted from the post Crazy posted:

The TSI does not have a flapper motor it is vacum operated and checked by a postion sensor that's why they are replacing the manifold.
Yikes...as I suspected....I hope I am wrong on this.....but I don't think so.

I saw a price thrown around of $800.

That's way, way less than $3500. Yeah it sucks though.

Why is VAG having so many issues with their xSI motors? Sludge buildup, new manifolds after a couple of years ... Nuts.

Looks like an easy DIY.

I'd check the intake manifold first before jumping to conclusions.
You might be able to fix/repair the actuator.

Swapping the motor or the whole IM?

The owner paid $100 for someone to plug a flat. I don't think he's gonna do it himself

If it's anything, I'm going to work on it.

He doesn't know ANYTHING about car nor care about cars.

I mean it's something that can be fairly easy to fix, I'll rather just do it for him.

When you say airbag light, do you mean SRS? If so, that light will also go on if there is a problem with a seat belt connector. I had that issue on my CLS and they replaced it free of charge and I was out of warranty.

Regarding the link to the other zine site, does the intake flap motor have anything to do with the throttle body realignment option that you can get with the APR tune? Just curious if it does or not.
