Most years I just check the annual statement from my car insurance broker, but in November, with the phone number in hand, I called to ask for quotes for two cars I was considering buying. There are three drivers in our family, but we have only one car, a Mazda. I mentioned that the new car would be arriving in April, in time for my daughter's return from university. She gets to drive the Mazda.

The broker mentioned that because my daughter was living away from home while attending university, some 130 km (80 miles) away, we were entitled to a discount, and although she is fully covered, whenever and wherever she drives our Mazda, her annual insurance premium drops from $900 Cdn to $250.

This is just a heads-up, but if you're family is in the same situation, perhaps you should make a call to see if you're missing something. If you have a son at university, how much of a savings might you realize? We split it 50:50, OK?

When the TSX arrives, my wife and I will have to swear that our daughter will NOT drive it, or it will cost us another thousand a year for insurance, and our daughter will NOT be covered on that car.

And if you're in the insurance business, I'm not telling you where I live!
